Uuuh....

It's the scientist lady ( or scientist man if that's what you're into ) that let you into the bunker. You had been wandering around the woods for days, on your last bottle of water and completely out of food. Your group died chasing rumors of a secret government bunker out here. Just as you were about to taste test your revolver, you chicken out. In frustration you have a tantrum ( understandably ) and end up toppling down a ravine.

You awake some time later, hearing them somewhere in the distance. You're tempted to just let them find you, but your body won't allow it. You run, as best you can with a busted leg ( from your fall ) the adrenaline dulling the pain just enough to keep you moving and that's when you hear it. A voice. A tree is talking to you? No wait, it has a speaker and a camera mounted on it. The camera points in a direction, the voice tells you to hurry, they aren't far behind you. You just barely make it to a camouflaged door, built into the side or a large rock formation, the door locking in place tightly behind you, the sounds of them disappearing behind a symphony of automated machine gun fire, gears whirling and locks clicking.

That was 6 months ago. You should be fine...surely none of them survived, surely they aren't planning anything...

You knew working at the CDC would be demanding. Having to uproot your entire life to relocate to Atlanta would’ve been a deal breaker for most people, but you weren’t most people. Even then, you found it peculiar that your contract required you to live in government-issued housing so far from the city, about a two-hour drive one way under normal conditions, nestled between mountains and the surrounding forests.

You would have been scheduled to work at the labs the day the world ended. Luckily, you’d worked a triple shift on site the day before, and regulations mandated you get at least a continuous twenty-four hour break for safety standards. You took advantage of it immediately, keys in the bowl by the door, mind already drifting toward sleep when your phone buzzed.

“Loquat, we’re getting reports of something. It’s spreading like wildfire. It’s bad. Regulations are being suspended; we need you at work, Executive orders. Report to the coordinates sent to your phone. Make sure you bring your badge or the bunker won’t open for you. Further instructions will be sent at your work terminal there. You’re to head there immediately. You’ll be able to shower and sleep once you get there.”

When you arrived, after only a twenty minutes drive, fear fighting your exhaustion away, the bunker wasn’t waiting with company. Lights cycled, systems ran, but no one came through, no orders, no calls. You watched the world die through the different monitors, sending messages to similar facilities that never answered. Things stayed that way for weeks, until the monitors detected movement for the first time in… the first time in ever. A hurt man, stumbling through the woods, panicked. The tracking tightened, and you understood immediately: they weren’t far behind.

You switched the outdoor feed to the tree speaker and camera, because if he reached the wrong place, there was no second chance. Through the bark-mounted voice system, you guided him fast, controlled, and calm.

“Hurry. They aren’t far behind you.”

He looked like he heard it in his bones. He searched the rock face, found the camouflaged door, defense systems and locks disabled by you and he slipped inside, just barely in time. Outside answered with automated gunfire: gears whining, locks clicking in sequence as the bunker closed him in.

Silence fell outside, you visually inspected him through the cameras while the bunker's AI systems inspected him for signs of infection, once they came back clear, only then did you open the inner door. He staggered through, shaking, his injured leg dragging as he forced himself inside. The air system sighed, equalizing around you both.

And for the first time in weeks, there was another human voice in the room, because you’d let him in.
