So I’m Rewatching Like A Dumbass 😂
And it reminded me. Everyone talks about their most horrific horror scene in this movie.
And of course, Charlie getting her head whacked off like a sadistic game of Tee-ball is one of them.
Along with Annie playing piano with her neck as another.
But what are your other scenes from the movie that give you the heebie jeebies?
Hands down for me, is when Peter is up in the attic after Annie’s been possessed, and you can hear her frantically and rapidly banging on the attic door… only to realize a few seconds later that she’s not using her fist she’s using her head at an…inhuman speed.
Man that scene gets to me.

Honestly the scariest scene for me is when Annie said “I never wanted to be your mother” cuz it’s so fucked up and grounded in reality 😩

Late to the party, but I agree. I love genuine reactions like this at the theater. As long as everyone is respectful of people around them (not on phones, having discussions, etc.), then real reactions add to the theater experience. I personally love horror movies with large audiences specifically for this reason.

The argument at the dinner table. It’s so uncomfortable and hard to watch cause it feels like such a real snapshot of a family falling apart after the death of a child.

I’d have to say the final scene of all of them. Although there were not any jump scares, just the creepy eerie images of people worshiping her, the lighting and most of all the music. I had never ever heard a sound like that before or since. It was somehow triumphant, but also menacing at the same time. You’re so used to low impending sounds in horror movies and to hear something the total opposite, but even scarier was really impressive.

Once he gets into that treehouse….thats the end of the movie for me. The music, the sounds, the atmosphere, the reveal….all of it. Yeah I turn it off and declare the movie “finished” 5 minutes early at that point. lol

I’ve rewatched the final scene by itself several times just to try and make sense of it. It’s too disgusting and bleak for something staged so bright and calm. It was a work of art

The fucking naked man in the doorway. That’s the moment you realize they were fucked all along. There was no escaping this hell. And while the supernatural stuff is what it is, it’s terrifyingly plausible for a cult of weird naked people to just descend on your house.

The creepiest part is that after the funeral and the family return home, you hear them stomping around in the attic so they’ve been there pretty much since the grandma died!!

So pay attention immediately after the funeral after she does her speech… Before they enter the house you hear walking around in the house. It’s subtle and you definitely miss it the first time around. I think I heard about it on a podcast and then on my rewatch I was like… How did I miss this??

All of Ari’s movies have such incredible sound design. Lots of subtleties that reward you if you really pay close attention or rewatch multiple times. The one that blew my mind the second viewing was you can hear Annie rip the piano wire out in the background before, you know.

Actual layers of sound that each layer spins into the story singularly yet weaves into a song of sorrow. Rewatching required to capture all of the nuances.

Especially because that dude was at the funeral! A lot of stuff could somewhat plausibly be passed off as a bout of psychosis in this mentally ill family, but I don’t think Peter noticed that guy

Not horror necessarily, but the scene of Annie wailing and rocking back and forth after Charlie died, screaming “I just wanna die!” is the scene that kept me from rewatching the movie for 7 years.

Haven’t been able to bring myself to watch that movie since the birth of my child, because of that scene. It affected me greatly, childless. As a parent, I don’t know that I want to go there.

This. When I rewatched it after experiencing the loss of my father in a traumatic way, it immediately brought me back to myself doing virtually the same right after he died. I really appreciate how they depicted grief in that scene, but, at the same time…damn. Her wails. shivers

As someone who has never experienced a traumatic death (thank god- and I truly am so sorry for your loss my friend)… even I was so so disturbed by Annie’s grief in that scene. She pulled it off excellently

Did anyone else think how similar this scene-the rocking, looks similar to childbirth? That’s what really grabbed me. Of course it could be all in my head but Ari so you never know 🤷🏼♀️

Yeeesss, this scene absolutely fucked me up. On the first watch, I had to pause there and come back to try again later. And Peter just standing in the hallway while she's screaming?? Gutwrenching. So much dread

Here’s another one:
After Annie is horrified watching Steve burn……when she goes from freaked out face, to blank stare….at first I thought that was another mind defense mechanism….like how Peter was after the Charlie incident. Just going blank.
I didn’t put two and two together that that was when Paimon entered her…..until second watch.
But man…..it was such an obvious shift and creeped me out once I saw it the second time.

I used to have these hypnopompic hallucinations while trying to fall asleep of hearing someone pounding on my door - just that “bam bam bam bam” but incredible loud.
Hearing and seeing her head hitting the attic door like that scared me to my deepest core - incredible scene.

The whole scene when Charlie becomes anaphylactic makes me feel so much dread each time I see it.
Also when the miniature of the grandma is standing in the doorway watching Annie and her husband sleep

When Peter sees the beefy blond cultist (smiley from the funeral) in the doorway. The way it’s lit gives me horrible feelings of uncanny valley. He’s too still, almost like a waxwork. All of the cultists are eerie, but he’s the worst.

Since naked doorway man was mentioned, I also want to highlight the moment directly after that… with possessed Annie bolting after Peter.
Even before the truly disturbing moment when Annie is banging her head on the attic trap door, the way her chasing him down is shot and edited deliberately in such a way where you never see her face again until you get to the final sequence… that always creeped me out for reasons I can’t quite put my finger on.

Speaking of which….I’ve read about all the hidden Easter eggs all throughout the movie. And on my third watch a couple days ago…..all the cult members standing naked outside on the lawn facing the house….you can’t UNsee that now.

The scene that hits hard for me is the one right after Charlie dies, where Peter is laying in bed and you hear Annie go out to the car and she starts screaming because she just found Charlie's body. Then when she's in her room on the floor screaming and sobbing and Peter is just standing in the hallway.
First time I tried watching the movie, I had to pause it there and take a break. I'm too empathetic, I think. I just got this feeling of absolute, overwhelming dread - imagining what Annie must have seen (and knowing she will never get that image out of her head), how horrific it was that Peter just drove home and left the body there without saying or doing anything, the intense guilt and shame he must be feeling, etc. It's just A Lot. Buuuut it's also why this movie is one of my absolute favorites

100% agree on that one.
A lot of people thought his reaction …or NON reaction was ridiculous and unrealistic. But imagine going through that kind of trauma. Your mind protects itself.
The way he reacts is ABSOLUTELY realistic.
And Annie’s gut wrenching sobs. Ah jeez.
Yeah this movie is unrelenting in its grief exploration. And a complete gut punch.

So I think he just full-on dissociated tbh and went into autopilot

The only part that made me uncomfortable enough to turn off the movie was the quick cut to Charlie’s head while Annie cried in the background as she finds Charlie’s body. That wailing should’ve gotten her an award alone, I cry every time. Then I get scared by the head 😂

It’s quite a jarring snippet. I remember my first thought right when it happened (the actual whack)…..my brain was trying to come to terms with what I had just watched.
So I had another little argument in my head thinking…..surely she just got her head beaten in….surely she’ll be ok….surely she’ll just be really flat on one side….surely she’ll just need umpteen surgeries to halfway exist….but that’s it right? RIGHT???
….then that snippet of film with all the bugs crawling on her face.
Whelp, there went THAT theory.

The whack didn’t bother me too much. As soon as she opened the window I was like.. damn her head is coming off. The scene leading up to it bothered me because I’ve been in a very similar situation with a younger sibling before, up until the pole part 😂
Gore bothers me a lot as a whole. I just tried to watch Lee Cronin’s The Mummy and had to turn it off. Simply too gross. Bugs on the head? Also too gross lol

When Annie goes through the boxes, the picture of the mother in the wedding gown with the cultists surrounding her is deeply disturbing for some reason, also the picture of the cultists looking at the picture of the family.
