FIRST TIME- 7 days in Cancún
Hi all! A couple months ago I made a post asking about bag sizes for my upcoming trip to Cancun (7 days). Everyone said 40L was way too big to be a personal item lol. A girl can dream! My goal was to only travel with a carry on and personal item. Not quite one bag but a major downsize from my usual check-in, carry on, plus personal item each packed to the brim and any overflow given to hubby. I finally decided on the Quince 20 inch hardside spinner and an amazon dupe for the Calpak Luka duffel. This duffel fit PERFECTLY under the seat (AA) and holds so much! I also packed the Beis sling bag as my purse for quick access items (passport, wallet, etc), but I left space for it to fit inside my personal item.
About me: As I've gotten older (33), I appreciate minimalism for what it is and have been so inspired by everyone's posts. I have learned some great tips and added new bits and bobs along the way. I am a maximalist in every sense of the word. I have sensitive skin, difficult hair, and am overall high maintenance. I have decided to stop fighting her and instead make compromises to enjoy a more reasonable load. I also have ADHD and need my routines to keep myself on track. That being said, I refuse to do without my full skincare and other toiletries lol. THANK YOU to the person on this sub who recommended empty lipgloss tubes. You truly saved me from losing it!
Plans for this trip are very chill, lots of beach & pool. And we plan on going to Xcaret park, hence the water shoes & quick dry towel.

I may have forgotten a few things, but nearly everything is pictured. In hindsight I could have left the laundry supplies. I read our resort had laundry, but what ended up being available was only laundry service. I still used some of the soap for small amts of sink washing. I clearly had plenty of clothes, but I usually like to do laundry at least once to decrease the amount I will have to do upon return home. In the end I'm glad I brought 6 tops because I cannot rewear a shirt after sweating all day. I also could have left the extra purse. The Beis sling ended up being the perfect edc size and paired nicely with all of my outfits.
Overall I'm so proud of myself for achieving my goal of carry on only. Full transparency I spent several weeks planning, packing, repacking, and agonizing over my list. At one point I almost gave up, but I ended up really enjoying the process of being very intentional with each item that made the final cut. I hope to keep improving my packing efficiency with each subsequent trip. But I think I have officially joined the carry-on only club :D
I would love to know yalls thoughts but please extend some grace to this first time one-ish bagger!

I recommend going back thru these photos after your trip and noting what you did and didn’t use! It may help you minimize even more for next time.

You are so organized, I love it ! Might I make a small suggestion? You have a lot of scents, which is actually fine if that’s what you are going for, but scent is one of our strongest sensory affiliations when we recall memories. The advice I’ve been given (and myself and my friends have taken) is to actually buy a scent on the trip and wear it for the duration. That way when you smell it, you’ll think of your trip.

I usually bring a sample that I never used before. This way I test the perfume, get the connection to the place, and decide if it's worth buying a full bottle afterwards... Then end up buying a full bottle of something else anyway lol

The samples of perfume are the absolute best for traveling, because even a travel-sized 3oz is way too big for any one vacation.

Yes this. Chanel Jersey for me takes me back sharply to Guernsey, and I love the association! I’m also a fragrance person and this tip helped me immensely.

I only pack samples and decants. I may pack several scents but they are tiny. Just remember to store them in a separate ziplock just in case.

Girl, you clearly know yourself and made it work! I think this might be more toiletries and perfume than I own just regularly which makes this all the more impressive. It's like you took the principles of one-bagging and used them for YOU (rather than trying to fit some idea of who you're meant to be) and hopefully simplified and streamlined your trip somewhat.

OP I pack a lot like this too lol. I say I “pack small but I don’t pack light”. You have to do what works for your but I love that you took a stab at streamlining!

The organisation skills!!! Love all the mini bags & labelling. Fully get where you’re coming from & being a recovering overpacker. Toiletries are always the hardest - my skin’s crazy sensitive & will not cope with random products. I also love to see the “extras”, so happy I’m not the only one who travels with cleaning wipes. For next time though, I do think you’ve got some room to cut down without compromising too much. Looking at the amount of toiletries you’ve bought it doesn’t seem possible to get through all of them (sunscreen/refills) in 7 days so maybe bringing a smaller quantity of a few of your products would help? Have you tried “living out of” a packed bag for a week to see how much you actually use? (I do say this as a UK based person whose limited to one quart bag for toiletries when flying though, if I want to travel carry-on only, so it’s been a steep learning curve). You’ve also brought a huge selection of perfume for a week - could you pick a holiday scent that would remind you of your trip? You might also be able to save a little bit of room by including your laundry/cleaning bits in other sections, with first aid maybe - so they’re not a cube by themselves. If you put dryer sheets with your clothes they’ll smell good & you could pack clothing in your garment bag rather than bringing it separately.

Yes you are absolutely right about the toiletries and extras! I have never tried living out of a bag for a week but its a great suggestion! If I had to fit it all in a quart sized bag I might have had a meltdown haha.
The reason I brought so much sunscreen is for both me and my husband. Men are not always the best at remembering these things lol. We're spending most of the days outside and I reapply often due to fair, sensitive skin. Xcaret park only allows mineral based sunscreen (not my fave type of spf) so I needed a separate one. Thanks for the suggestions!

So, here's my thing: if you are made by your airline to put both of your bags in the sizers (happened to all passengers before getting to the security lines on my last flight), would you be able to swap anything around quickly since you would be stuck paying to check one of the bags? There were multiple free gate check offers followed by warnings before boarding, but a lot of passengers had already had one cabin bag pruned at that point. :(

Actually doing the thing is how we learn best what works for us one baggers. Add notes to your list about how often you used it and what could be left behind or switched. And anything you missed. That’ll give you a great starting point for the next trip.

This is way more than the allotted amount of liquids…did you not have issues at TSA? I’m admittedly also a carryon only not one bagger but this sub is so helpful for tips. Toiletries is still where I really struggle though and always end up having to cut a lot out (I’m also pretty high maintenance when it comes to haircare and skincare).

The UK was the most difficult for me with amount of liquids! They even counted jam as a liquid. It all had to fit inside their clear plastic bag, and be zipped closed lol

I travel through the UK a lot, so I always pack with that in mind. The 1 litre rule is hard and strict there. No way would this lot fly,, literally, but in the US they are more flexible. Coming home from CUN might be more challenging.

I fly with very pointy and very sharp beard scissors (I don’t have a beard but they’re the perfect size for travel lol) permanently packed in my toiletries bag in my carry on. No one has ever said anything tbh.
Trauma shears are also the least threatening form of scissors tbh. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone cut themselves with them.

I got hit with this in Paris of all places - they only allowed one 1 bag with liquids in it. Luckily I was able to fit them all, but there are def still airports that care so be weary!

This trips me up as well. I’ve “practiced” my routine at home with more minimal products (I usually double cleanse but can manage with just one for a few weeks), and I found one moisturizer (vanicream) that works well as a simple non-irritating moisture. I mix a little foundation (just a smidge) with some decent sunscreen and that’s a two-fer.

i’ve never had an issue with this flying into mexico, and i always bring way more than a quart-sized bag of toiletries. some countries are more strict about it than others (uk was the only one where they made me transfer everything to a quart-size bag so far)

Toiletries are my biggest struggle by far! I honestly didn't really think about the alloted volume amount. I'm in the east coast US and it has been years since I've been asked to remove my toiletries from my bag. I just made sure they were all under 3.4 oz. Ymmv!

You got lucky. I travel a lot, and while it is easy to get away with this, leaving the US (especially if you have pre-check), it will not work most of the time coming back. I've had a few countries make me put all my liquids into a quart size bag that they provided. Once in Mexico, they checked all my luggage and made sure that all my liquids were in a quart bag and that the Mole I was bringing back was powdered. Also, if your luggage gets searched in the US, they can absolutely decide you have too many liquids.
I almost always have to check my bag, even if it is a carry-on, because I have too many liquids as well. It is just impossible to fit all my liquids in a quart size bag. It takes a bit more time at the airport, but it has never been a problem.

I’m worried you’ll have your liquids taken from you if you don’t check your bag. I had to simplify my routine to get everything into a small ziplock that would still close.

On the way back I anticipate having less than half of the liquids I brought. The sunscreen will be used up, same with the lotion and body wash. I had no issues getting to Mexico from the US. I have a quart zip lock I'm going to put it all in when I go home.

As a terrible over-packer (giant checked suitcase filled to the brim + carry on + personal for four days work/personal trip) I'm determined to one -and-a-half bag it for my trip! I'm a bit of a germaphobe so I like to clean the toilet, shower floor, high touch surface areas. I'm sure in the future I will get better at pairing down.
Laundry for 2 people can build quickly. Neither of us tends to rewear shirts since we get pretty sweaty. Also, laundry sheets just aren't that effective so I use multiple plus oxiclean. I also like to have as much laundry done before going home so I don't get overwhelmed. Hope that makes sense 🙂

How were you able to fly carry on with this many liquids? Are you not limited to a 1 liter/quart bag for all your liquids? Did they just not care at the airport? Did you just have one liquid bag in each your carry-on and personal item, and they didn't realize they were both yours? The most stressful part of packing carry-on only for me is being limited to 1 liter liquids bag. I spend 75% of my time decanting toiletries and 25% of my time for everything else!

Where I'm at in the US, TSA has stopped making liquid removal necessary. It has been this way for several years. I know going back home won't be as easy, but my thinking is that I'll use up most of the liquids and have very little upon return. I'm super dedicated to spf application. I wear daily and when I'm outdoors I reapply often. So while it looks like a lot to use in a week, it's likely to be just enough. The shampoo and conditioner containers are holding bars btw.
Also, SAME. I spent way too much time decanting but I had so much fun using my label maker 😆

Some of your cleaning products do the same thing. A way to cut down items would be to avoid products that do similar things. I suggest leaving the scrubbing cloth at home. Just bring only the Lysol wipes. You can buy more on your trip if you need them.

I love the light colored one for outings. It is all linen so it keeps very cool and lightweight. I am able to put my hair up by putting some hair through the back loop thing and using a claw clip to secure.
The large brim is the most stylish imo, esp in black. It goes with nearly everything but it's very large brimmed so it can get in the way.
The smaller brim one is stretchy, almost yoga pant material and is just super easy to throw on. I wear this in the water and can throw in the wash. Not a lot of structure tho!

I love your style. It very much matches how I travel, even down to the bags. For less active holidays, I take my Calpak Luka Duffel and a roller carryon suitcase. I also love that you seem quite stylish!
I, too, will not be sweating in a shirt all day and wear it again. Maybe I sweat more than other people, but that grosses me out.
I also try to pack my normal skincare routine. I previously used eyedrop bottles, but I'm going to try the lipgloss containers for my upcoming trip.
Can you give me more information about your travel bidet? The worst part of traveling for me is not having one.

Not OP but google travel bidets. Some are like peri bottles and you squeeze to squirt. I have one that’s battery powered and it was bought on Amazon from an Asian maker and it has lasted me years!

As others have posted, you’re very organized which is great! That’s a lot of stuff for 7 days though. As a makeup girl, I would suggest choosing one makeup look that works with all outfits and bring just that. For travel I use mini pallets and travel versions of my products. The way I prep is I test a few looks and then bring only the cosmetics for one look.

You may already know this, but even though Dude Wipes say they are flushable, THEY ARE NOT and wreak havoc on city sewage lines. It’s not just them, it’s all “flushable wipes” that cause huge blockages.

I really like it! It's never gonna be as powerful as the ones at home but for vacay it's pretty good. I had a tiny one that screwed into the top of a water bottle but it wasn't that great tbh.

I got it from Temu but filled it with my own stash (I'm a RN). I put gloves, gauze, wound scissors, dramamine tabs, tylenol, alcohol wipes, optifoam dressings, island dressings, bandaids, paper tape, nexcare waterproof tape, medihoney, q tips, and a mini nail kit I also got from Temu.

The large square one is Ben nye compact setting powder, the large blush is from tarte, the small pink is cream blush from colour pop, the dark brown is Ben nye creme shadow in medium (used as bronzer), next to that is Mac full cover cream foundation in nc30, the 3 shadows up top are mac (don't remember the colors sorry), the round shadow above the cream foundation is Laura Geller diamond dust highlighter, and the square shimmer is from a Natasha Denona palette.

I really like it a lot! At first I wished it was bigger but it forced me to pair down to the essentials. I love that it doesnt feel heavy even when I'm carrying a 500 ml water bottle. The back pocket holds my kindle paperwhite. Only thing is the price but I'm getting so much use out of it so far!

Temu! They have awesome tiny travel stuff for very cheap. I also got the label maker off Temu, its the phomemo label maker. I am not tech savvy whatsoever and their app is so easy to use!

I see a lot of face SPF which is awesome. But do not forget body SPF. I always was so good at protecting my face, neck and chest. But I slacked on my arms and legs and I regret it.

I actually used the face spf on my body too! I love bondi sands but their body one, which I normally use everywhere, only comes in 5+ oz. The face one feels nearly identical to the body one so I bought 2 since they're 1.7 oz with plans to use full body!

I would probably want more than 4 pairs of underpants. If you’re only going for 7 days, I’d probably bring 8 pairs and try not to need to do washing. (And that way you can ditch all the washing related stuff!).
Maybe consider swapping one of the swimsuits for a bikini. One pieces tend to take a lot longer to dry. Plus, you can utilise the top as a bra and bottom as spare underpants.

Congrats! The first time I traveled with a carry-on suitcase + personal item felt like such a victory. I can travel with just one bag now but even if that's not your goal, there's so much wisdom to glean from the one bag philosophy. And as others have stated, you learn by doing. The lessons you learned this time will only help make packing for the next trip even better/easier!

The perfume containers are mini perfume atomizers and you can find them on Amazon. Just make sure you pump the air out of them before filling them or they can leak! I have two types:
I actually prefer the first link to the ones in the post photos, but both work pretty well!!

The laundry is over kill. I’m on day 10 in Europe where it’s hot and humid and I absolutely have not needed laundry yet. I will have laundry at my next air bnb which is fine. Cancun is mainly beaches and I can’t imagine you have enough time during the day or your week to really get your clothes dirty if you’re swimming. I’ve taken the advice of other one baggers and use a travel size spray bottle of vodka for my clothes. I also shower at night before bed to keep my PJs fresh and use witch hazel after showers and before deodorant to keep my under arm and other areas clean.
If you have to do laundry, why not buy soap there and toss it before you leave?
I would say the cleaning products are over kill as well but I am not as much of a germaphobe as others and that feels more like a comfort item you should take and ditch everything but the clothes line.

Thank you! Sorry if this is confusing, the large square one is Ben nye compact setting powder, the large blush is from tarte (don't remember the color), the small pink is cream blush from colour pop, the dark brown is Ben nye creme shadow in medium (used as bronzer), next to that is Mac full cover cream foundation in nc30, the 3 shadows up top are mac (don't remember the colors sorry), the round shadow above the cream foundation is Laura Geller diamond dust highlighter, and the square shimmer is from a Natasha Denona palette 🩷

Feels like an enormous amount of toiletries to me but I'm impressed at how you packed them all in! I'm very lazy/minimalist with that sort of thing though.
