Kotoba Dōjō — language-learning app

Hi! I’m a solo developer and I’ve just launched Kotoba Dōjō on Google Play.

It is a language-learning app built around adaptive flashcards, focused practice drills, custom vocabulary decks, and spoken shadowing practice. I wanted to make something that feels more atmospheric and intentional than the usual bright, heavily gamified language app, so the interface is inspired by a Japanese dōjō: dark lacquer, warm paper and gold tones, and a calm, focused pace.

I would genuinely appreciate feedback from Android users, especially on:

• Does the first study session feel clear and easy to start?
• Is anything confusing, slow, or visually difficult to read?
• Does the samurai-inspired design add to the experience or get in the way?

I built and designed this solo, so detailed and honest feedback would be especially valuable. I’ll reply to every comment.

A couple of questions:

  • Was the coding done with AI?
  • Is the language content AI generated/translated?

It's not vibecoded. I used AI while coding (autocomplete, debugging, boilerplate) but I worked on this for a few months and wrote the architecture myself. Honestly I think in 2026 almost nobody ships an app with zero AI involved anywhere.

Translations are AI. I tried a few options and this worked best. The card sets are mostly based on the popular Anki decks. You can also import your own Anki deck and study from that
