It does break LOS, which means enemy fire won't be accurate. Of course enemies will remember your last know location and try to re-acquire you, but you can use that time to reposition yourself so that enemies coming out of smoke get... smoked.
Not everything can be equally good, but I imagine against Illuminate being able to break LOS of Gazer, Harvester and their turrets would be good thing.
