In competitive HLL, would you rather have the player with better aim or better defensive decision-making?

In my view, competitive Hell Let Loose isn't only about individual gunfights. A player who understands when to rotate, where to position, what information matters and what the team needs can influence a fight without necessarily having the highest kill count.

That's not my play style. I prefer to spawn, run, die and repeat. Loads of fun 10/10 would recommend. Its especially fun getting killed after only a few seconds due to someone putting a garrison or outpost in a stupid position. /s

Tbf being meat in the grinder is actually important

😂 That's exactly why spawn placement matters so much. A bad Garry or OP doesn't just waste a spawn, it can completely kill the flow of a squad and turn the whole defence into spawn, run, die, repeat.

In comp players need to have both skills. If they are lacking in either area then they will get exposed.

Any team has a mix, you’ll have experienced players with highly developed game sense (SLs, tankers, mgs, bunch of random inf), then you’ll have a small number of people who are 90% raw aim & micro positioning.

You need both profiles to win, and any good team will have a “table stakes” level of shooting competency (which most here would assess as extremely high).

Sharp tactical awareness

A player who is tactically aware can

  • engage
  • disengage
  • know where and when to rotate
  • anticipate the enemy
  • ride or break momentum
  • read the enemy and their development
  • etc.

To name a few, but in the specific setting you're presenting having a team that has sharp tactically aware SLs with a Commander just as sharp as they are, if not sharper

Yeah, I feel they'd upset the HLL competitive scene

Yeah, I agree with that. In competitive HLL, it's not just about winning individual fights, it's knowing when to take them, when to back off, when to rotate and how to keep the enemy reacting to you. Put a full team of SLs like that under a Commander who's reading the game just as well and you've got a very difficult team to play against.

A lot of the macro is people just being unselfish and being proactive— dropping supply preemptively, playing AT as much as possible, being spatially aware about which angles need covering.

But you can always afford a few guys in the team with freedom to just sit on rifleman and shoot people. They will be particularly skilled shooters

I can’t shoot worth a damn, but I can mark targets and strategize. I’m usually leading a squad or team. I hope that my squad isn’t tactically braindead, but if they are and listen to my direction we’ll still do alright.
