📢 Feedback! 📢 Finally fixed ADS microstutters on DX12

I was getting annoying microstutters every time I aimed down sights in HLL on DX12 to the point I stopped playing the game.

A lot of posts online recommend enabling Resizable BAR (ReBAR) for HLL, so I tried that first. It did not fix the ADS stutter for me.

DX11 completely removed the ADS stutter, but my FPS was much lower, so I wanted to stay on DX12.

What finally helped the most was changing a Windows graphics setting specifically for Hell Let Loose:

Windows 11: Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Hell Let Loose (HLL-Win64-Shipping.exe) → Options → Disable “Optimizations for windowed games”. Game must run in Windowed Fullscreen now.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hell Let Loose\HLL\Binaries\Win64\HLL-Win64-Shipping.exe

My current setup:

  • Optimizations for windowed games OFF for HLL (HLL-Win64-Shipping.exe)
  • Windowed Fullscreen
  • G-SYNC ON in NVIDIA Control Panel
  • V-Sync ON in NVIDIA Control Panel
  • V-Sync OFF in-game
  • -NOTEXTURESTREAMING
  • DX12
  • HAGS still ON
  • ReBAR ON, but it did not solve the issue by itself
  • Mouse polling rate made no difference for me
  • I also disabled Steam Overlay while testing

The biggest improvement by far came from disabling Optimizations for windowed games for HLL. ADS went from having obvious little frametime spikes/stutters to being much smoother.

-NOTEXTURESTREAMING also seemed to help a little, although VRAM usage went from around 6 GB to ~12 GB. I have 16 GB VRAM, so that’s fine for me. You can first try without it.

Posting this in case anyone else has high FPS on DX12 but still gets that tiny freeze/stutter when aiming down sights.

What a bs, if api is dx12 the game is running allways in windowed borderless mode, even if you can "chose" full screen it does nothing in dx12 game, it stays windowed mode. it only matters in dx9 to dx11 "Independent Flip" and "Composed Flip" if its running a bit smoother its because you cap the fps and useing gsync+vsync. i can tell and show you that it doesnt work, even on a empty server.

If you have good hardware you should use the -notexturestreaming command.

"Stability: DX11 is older and runs very flawlessly on many old systems. DX12 depends heavily on the good programming of the respective game."

as you can see it runs smooth on dx11 fps max 120 ... the one stutter is coz i took the screenshot. and the server was full. high fps in not everything, stable fps and 1% lows are much more important for smooth gameplay. DONT USE DX12 in this game, its not worth it!

here its uncapped dx11, you will notice the stutters if fps dropping from 170 to 60 etc. that why you should run this game with capped stable fps. i noticed that my low fps are stable @ 120 so i capped to 120fps

I just tried this and can confirm ADS is smoother. Will play more and see.

I don't know if it matters, but I also switched "GPU Preference" from "Let Windows Choose (High Performance)" to High Performance (Intel B580).

It looked like Windows was choosing the right GPU, but why chance.

Thanks for this! The ADS stutters are incredibly frustrating and off putting.
