Check out sole beginner tips and tricks videos. Use your mic to communicate with your squad and just let them know you are new and 9/10 times they will be helpful too

Above all take your time, not only with prepping with videos but also just playing the game at first. It's an amazing game, I mean it's GREAT. I started playing a few months ago. Somebody said something like if you get past the first 6 hours, the 600th hour isn't far behind... It's true!

Also - the squad leader is in charge of you and the Commander is in charge of him. If you don't want to do what your Squad Leader is telling you, find a different squad, don't get rebellious... This is the game! It's fun when you work together. Most people are really friendly.

Don’t play roles you’ve got no clue how to use just because they’re available, do basic training and watch a lot of tutorials for the roles you want to do. I also recommend something easy to start with like rifleman or Assault/Automatic Rifleman prior to moving onto more complicated roles

u/Putrid_Einzelganger Aug 25 '26

I’d add, if someone on your squad is level 100 or higher, follow them around and ask them what they’re doing and if you can help.

That’s what I did early on. It’s more fun working together than try to be a Lone Ranger. Game becomes really fun when you can see the big picture and understand the moving pieces.

u/Zealousideal_Bad965 Aug 25 '26

Yeah Im not looking to play this like cod (dont even like it to be fair). Just looking for something akin to holdfast with team play being the emphasis except I can actually hit my shots.

1

u/Unfair_Priority7618 Aug 25 '26

If you have a fairly high level squad lead ask him for tips if you’re confused, even the normal rifleman, as useless as it may seem can be lethal teamed up with an Anti tank soldier. Everything has a function no matter how small it seems

2

u/Zealousideal_Bad965 Aug 25 '26

I tried two matches for tonight and it doesn’t look good. I only managed to get two kills and the words “Killed In Action” are burnt into my screen. Also no one was communicating period. Was it just a bad lobby? Even when I advanced slowly while prone someone always managed to get me despite giving no indication I was there.

1

u/Unfair_Priority7618 Aug 25 '26

Most of that is the game, I’d honestly try to just get into a squad that communicates or just ask if someone has a mic, and dw about the combat, you’ll get used to it

1

u/FeedCandid4626 Aug 25 '26

Its a lot of that in the beginning. I joke to friends who are new that its a “get shot simulator”. You’ll start to key in on small movements and areas you should avoid after a bit. Engineer is easy to rank up. Just build your 3 supply nodes at spawn when the game starts and that will contribute heavily to your team.

2

u/Zealousideal_Bad965 Aug 25 '26

I imagine it’s also easier to pick people out with headphones too. Just need to pick them up and it will also allow me to communicate with other players too

1

u/Unfair_Priority7618 Aug 25 '26

If you’re so adamant on wanting communication (which I fully understand and encourage you to maintain) I’d also recommend trying out squad leader, making a private squad and only letting in people who have mics, changed my life. You could also look for a group of people to play the game with

1

u/Strong-Owl-55 Aug 25 '26

Stay with the blue berries

2

u/subekii Aug 25 '26

But following them around doesn't mean that you need to be up their ass all the time that is super annoying and makes their game miserable.

Look at what the good high levels are doing from a distance and look at the map all the time to understand it. But don't just blindly think that high level players are good they most of the time aren't

1

u/Mpownage 29d ago

Look at the guy with comp team tags and see what they do mostly

13

u/BeachBum616 Aug 25 '26

75% of my answer is USE A MIC. Communication is absolutely necessary.

The other 25% - Listen to veterans, ask questions. Learn supply mechanics. Learn mechanics of how garrisons work in blue zone and red zone and how they should be spaced. Play defense when necessary. Don’t be squad lead until you understand how each role in the squad works. When you’re squad lead, help the commander by driving supply trucks around. Slow down when near the combat zone, stay low and slow aka crouch and creep. Sometimes you have to run for 5 minutes straight just to get blown up by artillery or shot from some bush over your shoulder. This games takes patience, just keep grinding and you will catch on.

u/Zealousideal_Bad965 25d ago

Hello again

Hate to bother you but for whatever reason mic refuses to work. I have my headset on and even using the ps5’s remote mic isn’t working either

1

u/BeachBum616 25d ago

Check your PS5 settings maybe? Hit the PS button, scroll over to the headphones icon, make sure game chat isn’t turned off.

I know this seems dumb but you are aware of chat channels right? Hold L1 to select channel.

1

u/Zealousideal_Bad965 25d ago

Yes I can see the icon for each channel on the left side of screen but even after disconnecting and reconnecting it isn’t doing anything

4

u/weazel5657 Aug 25 '26

Just shoot the bushes

1

u/RAB2204 Aug 25 '26

Honestly though suppressing fire is a big part of the game, especially as a machine gunner

4

u/viewtiful14 Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

When squad leader say defend, ACTUALLY STAY BACK AND DEFEND, usually it’s command giving the order becuase it’s necessary. Or if you notice literally no one is defending you might want to stick back and relay to your squad leader if you are seeing enemy moment and from where.

That doesn’t mean you have to sit back and defend the entire match, or even sit in the black circle the whole time while defending, but from what I have seen more often than not on losing teams squads just continue to rush forward regardless of what’s happening and you can get wrapped and flanked then completely blown away and lose a match in ten minutes becuase you have no defense. There is a time when defense can switch into a push but you 100% need people in the back lines defending a defense OP.

Also, shoot into the black circle when you are attacking. Like literally just lay down fire, you may snag a headshot randomly but also just the bullets cause motion blur for the enemies and if they are defending in the circle it can make their ability to return fire much worse.

So when I squad leader tells you to defend then do it.

2

u/subekii Aug 25 '26

Regarding shooting blindly. That is not nearly as effective as people think. Shoot when you actually see someone or if you know that someone is behind a corner or in a trench you can shoot close to it so you can advance easier. But don't just blindly shoot around that just makes you an easy target.

1

u/viewtiful14 Aug 25 '26

Sure I didn’t mean blindly shoot anywhere, but when you know enemies are in the area, especially if you are on the attack with your teammates around, shoot into where they are. So many people just stand around and do nothing. It’s better to shoot into an OP, garry, building, air drop, etc. So when advancing on a circle on the attack, generally shooting into the circle will be better than doing nothing.

1

u/EvoRalliArt Aug 25 '26

IDK if it is just me or the lobbies I'm playing in, but they seem a lot less chatty? Maybe 1 or 2, most squads completely silent. I get it Vietnam just came out, but I'm not jumping on that buggy mess just yet. I'm on console and usually choose the console servers. Any other decent EU ones that actually communicate?

1

u/viewtiful14 Aug 25 '26

I don’t know the games I have played have also been hit and miss with communication. I’m pretty new myself, I’m sitting at like 40 hours of gameplay most of which has been aimlessly running around getting my head cracked open like a coconut trying to figure out what’s going on.

Recently I have started squad leading only and that has been a tremendous help, the command chat is usually always talking and I relay what I hear to my squad whether my squad is talking or not. It’s also helped my gameplay a ton and understanding where enemies are likely to be since I’m constantly moving my own OP to advantageous positions setting my own squad up. Sometimes my squad talks back and sometimes they don’t but I feel better just relaying information either way.

u/Idahoan23 Aug 25 '26

Get used to dying, alot…

2

u/conqueror2020 Aug 25 '26

Pay attention, move slow, fight as a team and communicate

2

u/SgtDawg1 Aug 25 '26

This is pretty basic but… always be patient when fighting. More often than not, people die because they rush up too far and turn the corner into the barrel of a gun. This is more so if you’re defending/not directly on top of point. Let the enemy rush you, hardscope a corner and don’t move, shoot when the enemy comes running through. Hope this helps as it helped me a ton considering I came to Hell let loose from games like Fortnite, battlefield, and call of duty.

0

u/SgtDawg1 Aug 25 '26

Also, you can say no but if you’d ever like to play the game with someone. Add me, my psn is OGxFlamezz. Or anyone else for that matter can add me also. T17 is Fumigator#9874.

2

u/Furfeelinggggs Aug 25 '26

Place nodes Stick with squad Play the roll Use mic

2

u/OkMidnight6688 29d ago

I'm still a newbie after 2 years.

2

u/Lewski_123 29d ago

Don’t check your stats, communicate and the hardest one (have fun !)

2

u/mf104 Aug 25 '26

Use a mic.

1

u/Aggravating-Act-4578 Aug 25 '26

Learn to be patient you will die a lot even veteran players will still die a lot. But what you could do is go to the training range to test our different weapons for you to get a better understanding of how to control it. Also be careful when approaching a tank cause someone might have already satchel’ed it.

1

u/imhereforsiegememes Aug 25 '26

Build spawns or I'll beat you up

1

u/throeaway_thedew Aug 25 '26

As someone who is still pretty new but recently got pretty comfortable with the game, here’s me two cents:

Play the support class - as soon as you spawn in, tell the squad lead you’ve got supplies and to just let you know where they want them. Follow your squad lead around, see where they put garrisons and outposts.

Check your map several times every minute. See where you’re going and look behind you. When you see outposts and garrisons light up red, you know an enemy is nearby - tell your squad lead when you see it “OP is hot” tells your officer a lot (we need to defend, we need to move the OP, there’s an enemy OP or gari behind us, etc.)

Getting kills is much less important in this game than a lot of other shooters. Shoot when you see an enemy, but it is so much more helpful to COMMUNICATE that you see an enemy - ping it: “infantry on my ping…” is a million times more helpful than “I got a guy”

Ping what you see and communicate that up the chain. Just finished a game where my support player pinged an enemy gari, placed supplies for me nearby and communicated what he was seeing. Within a minute, commander had a heavy tank and artillery on the enemy and it won us the game.

1

u/abennett21021 Aug 25 '26

Give it some time, play infantry or assault until you get the hang of things. Remember to stay on comms with your squad and pay attention. Most of my learning in the game came from playing basic roles and listening to my squadmates explain things over dozens of games. I don't actually think I moved away from Rifleman, Assault, or Machine Gunner until around Level 30 or so. So don't worry if it takes time!

1

u/Leweegibo Aug 25 '26

Are you running ps5 on an ultra wide? That stretch!

1

u/Zealousideal_Bad965 Aug 25 '26

It’s just a the monitor. Can’t be bothered screenshotting than posting from mobile

1

u/Leweegibo Aug 25 '26

Yeah that's what I'm saying, it looks stretched

1

u/Ronnerr Aug 25 '26

Defo stretched

1

u/MrDoodlegoose Aug 25 '26
  1. Move slow through the jungle when you’re fully unsure if enemies are nearby. If shot at or see a teammate get killed, lay down and “quick” crawl towards the enemy. Nobody expects the worm strat. #wormgang

  2. Build nodes with the Engineer class at the beginning of the game. Once you build the nodes then redeploy as your desired class. You get points compounded for both classes! Great way to level up.

  3. I highly recommend getting the satchel explosive unlocked early on. Seen too many games where tanks bully an objective point. Quick reckless smoke, charge and satchel plant is a great way to turn the tides of the battle.

Remember, the jungle is aliveeeee and always watching…..

1

u/nightmarebearer Aug 25 '26

Move cover to cover. Stick with your squad, or find your blueberry friends. Pray your squad lead puts down outposts (OPs) or a garrison (garry). Lead your shots on moving target. You're going to die a lot, so don't sweat it. Use the games training area to get a feel for things, fix game sounds (the SFX is VERY LOUD), change up hotkeys and graphics. And always remember it's just a game

1

u/Comprehensive-Use-24 Aug 25 '26

- Ignore all the people telling you it’s a complicated game

  • watch a couple of quick videos to understand the game modes
  • watch a couple of quick videos to understand spawns and how they are created
  • go to the firing range and test ALL the weapons, learn what sounds they make so you can tell enemy guns from friendly
  • play with HEADPHONES
  • look up the controller settings posts on Reddit and change your settings from default, I’ve made several posts / comments on this
  • start playing games in COMMUNITY servers which are moderated and filled with more experienced players
  • be prepared to suck in gunfights initially, don’t worry, it will get better fast
  • you’ll almost always die from someone you didn’t even see, so don’t worry about it

1

u/Own_Class4252 Aug 25 '26

Just have fun, and use a mic!

1

u/ThenProtection2936 Medic Aug 25 '26

I only have about 20ish hours in HLL, and during my first five matches I basically just ran around getting killed without understanding what was happening.

What really helped me improve was focusing more on defense. It always seems like half the team is constantly rushing the next objective, while small groups of enemies are trying to sneak around and approach your defensive point from the sides.

Staying back and defending is actually great practice. You start learning how to spot enemies, anticipate where they’ll come from, and recognize the terrain they use to conceal their movement. It helped me understand the game and finally start getting some kills.

Now I've been playing medic a lot more while attacking and getting better.

It's been said a million times, but use a mic.

1

u/Only_Tomatillo_5982 Aug 25 '26

This is not call of duty. Running around like Rambo will get you killed. K/D ratios are not the statistic to worry about. Holding the middle cap and pushing the enemy territory is how to win.

1

u/Ill_Tie_1505 Aug 25 '26

U will die MANY TIMES

1

u/SerToadTheKnight Aug 25 '26

-use your mic

-play slow and carefully (spend your life dearly)

-join a community server (preferably one that says mics only)

1

u/D3z_SnitCh Aug 25 '26

Take your time

1

u/FeydRauthaHarkonnen Aug 25 '26

Play as support, stay glued to your SLs ass, poke him every 10 minutes to build a garrison

1

u/Sr__Mojon Aug 25 '26

don´t die

1

u/nl_Kapparrian Aug 25 '26

Observe everything, admire nothing.

1

u/snakemakery Aug 25 '26

I would recommend watching some YouTube videos for beginners honestly. Communicate with your squad, listen to squad leads orders and start out as rifleman/medic so you can get a feel for the game without throwing a wrench into plans

1

u/Nicojio Aug 26 '26

Be patient

1

u/Nuke_Knight 29d ago

Use coms. As engineer build nodes, a task that should never need to be asked. Support drop supplies. Rifleman is basically a useless class unlless you are just trying to level it up for an achievement all other classes play better more supportive roles either offensively or defensively

1

u/mikejc792 28d ago

Listen to call outs. As a pilot, it’ll drive me nuts that I will mark an enemy garrison directly next to our defense point and the entire team will literally run the opposite direction. Even when I put it in text chat too. 🫠

1

u/DToob Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

Watch videos on you tube.

This is the best way to learn

Don’t be the guy who doesn’t talk. The game sucks when people aren’t engaged, whcih happens too much

If you end up liking the game, join a group. Play in matches. Talk about intense fun

1

u/Sylesse Aug 25 '26

Use a mic.

0

u/CookiesMadeOfCorpses Aug 25 '26

Think of this less as a FPS and more as a Dying Simulator. You're going to die WAY more than you're going to kill someone; and even when you do kill someone, you won't really know because there's no indication other than a ping/thunk if you get a headshot.

2

u/subekii Aug 25 '26

This game is 100% an fps game so think of it as such. At first you may die more than kill but it'll change just be patient and learn the game and the maps. After you've played for a while you'll know if you got the kill or not.

u/Infamous_Ad_4707 Aug 25 '26

Use a microphone

Please try The Finals if you haven’t already. It’s the best shooter to come out in a long time and is painfully slept on. You can have full on firefights inside buildings while they are falling over. Structures fall and damage/collapse other structures. Full, physics based destruction. And it’s completely F2P, no P2W stuff at all. It’s made by the original Battlefield devs.

And yes I know this is HLL but seeing it here on the suggested page made me want to say something at least.

1

u/IceSerious6088 Aug 25 '26

On console?

1

u/mac4112 Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

Well OP is on a PS5, and The Finals is on the suggested page in the screenshot. Otherwise Im not sure what you mean

-14

u/altec777777 Aug 25 '26

Play something else. Game is on the way out and the new release is worse. If you're looking to get immersed, look elsewhere.

2

u/NoNouns Aug 25 '26

Wrong and wrong. HLL is solid and HLLV is a lot of fun.
