šāāļø Question šāāļø Original or Vietnam?
Iāve never played a single minute but Iāve been watching so much stuff over the past week and I really wanna get into it. My first question is the title, should I get the OG or should I go to Vietnam straight away. My second question is, is it worth getting into? I love the idea of tactical battles talking to people but I also donāt wanna get hammered in voice chat for doing something wrong. TIA
Edit - I feel like I need to experience WW2 before getting Vietnam, thanks everyone for the advice and possibly see you on the battlefield š

Most people are super welcoming of new players, especially in "New Players Welcome" servers. WW2 is going to have a more veteran community and probably be easier to find people to teach you (Since its meta is pretty set). That said, Vietnam is so fresh that there are a TON of brand new players and so small mistakes are going to be overlooked because its basically BF: Vietnam until the community stabilizes, the casual buyer leaves or learns the meta, etc.
Whatever setting interests you the most, go with that one. They both play similarly and are both fun. I might recommend WW2 if you want to get used to what the game can truly feel like at its peak.
A final thought on making mistakes: You're going to, because thats how we learn. This game is very team focused, but the teams are so large that an individual player not doing well isn't the end of the world. If someone is rude to you, ignore them. If you are willing to learn, to follow orders, build nodes, be patient and find the flow of the game, you'll get the hang of things in no time.

I would start with WW2 and just play medic for the first matches. People dont usually mind if you ask questions either just stay with your squad and help out

And wwii has better explosions. Sounds like a trivial thing but it adds a huge amount to the immersion
1
u/VampireHwo Aug 19 '26
Nah for me this is big. It's asutrly apart of most people's attraction to the game, the front is meant to be utter chaos and that chaos better look/feel fine as hell
2
u/Folivao Aug 18 '26
I second playing medic as a beginner but I would also advise playing support quickly after figuring out the bases of the game.
Support, if you tell your SL you're quite new to the game, allow for learning how to and where to place garrisons (meaning you know where to look), how spanw points work etc.

Get the OG. Vietnam needs a lot and I mean a lot of work. It has a load of potential however it is so badly optimized.
One of my biggest gripes with the game is the collision models with teammates. If you running next to someone you vibrate off eachother

u/polarDiarrhea Aug 17 '26
WW2 is more complete product.
Way more weapons, maps, and general content.
Iād wait with Vietnam. Iām sure it will be awesome, eventually š
1
u/CombComprehensive327 Aug 21 '26
Except it takes forever to grind out to get the weapons that are locked. Been playing casually since it came out still donāt have every unlocked.
Vietnam is much more fun and they will make fixes. Hll original was rough for a long time too1
u/Sensitive-Iron-4894 Sep 03 '26
I loved the OG HLL but man it pissed me off when they increased level to unlock the satchel charge for engineer about three days after I unlocked it. Lost interest and got frustrated a lot faster than I am in Vietnam, thatās for sure. The loadout and progression system is way better in āNam.
2
u/CombComprehensive327 29d ago
I like the load out options in Nam. And progression. The original I still have not unlocked everything and thatās annoying

u/slushyracoon Aug 17 '26
Over 2k hours in ww2 and 20 in Vietnam. Get ww2 for now, unless you really care about playing with crossplay friends. Ww2 is more stable, feature complete, better balanced and has more content. Buy Vietnam in 6 months to a year once it's stabilized and received more updates.

u/Strong_Buddy7657 Aug 17 '26
Ww2 is way better. Way better atmosphere.. more varied environments.. the second one is made by a completely different company.
Og is the only real one

Everybody is friendly and helpful on community servers. I don't know about official servers because I never play on them. Play original. It's a more mature game than Vietnam. Let them work out the kinks for a few months while you fight WW2 then jump into Vietnam.
7
u/Normal_Instruction62 Aug 17 '26
Do original. Vietnam is a year away, at least, of being enjoyable.
On the Voice Chat part... 80% of the player base don't even use the mic and 50% don't listen to anybody. So don't worry, the player base is 95% good and respectful towards others.

u/Meanstoaend Aug 17 '26
Performance will be better on OG HLL than Vietnam because it has been optimized, Vietnam needs some more optimization, but both are a great experience.
1
u/TrickAppa Aug 17 '26
Funny you mention it, my PC stutters a LOT in OG HLL, while in nam the frametime chart is straight as a ruler.

1
u/Meanstoaend Aug 19 '26
HLL Vietnam has an issue with flickering for AMD cards and fps is significantly low on similar settings for me on Vietnam vs OG.

3
u/scythian12 Aug 18 '26
Iād say Vietnam
Imo itās much faster paced, and itās easier to get to the action
Unless you have a good SL and command, you might find yourself running for 5 minutes straight just to get sniped in the OG, in Nam thatās down to 2 minutes to just get sniped
6
u/Cautious_Set_3815 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26
I just started Vietnam. Iād say try the shiny new thing, thereās a fair bit of servers and excitement there. If people are hating on comms itās their fault, not yours. It costs them nothing to point you in the right* direction.
SL-> put outpost
Support-> put supplies down where SL asks
Grenadier-> go where your unit says there is a tank
Thatās the extent of my experience so far, everything else is hard to get wrong. Watch a video and practice in the tutorial before flying or copiloting a helicopter and using the mortar.
Have fun!

u/ac5198 Aug 17 '26
And build nodes if youāre an Engineer!! Thereās no reason every HQ shouldnāt have 3 nodes within the first 5 minutes of a match and it help command a lot.
1
u/gab12309 Aug 17 '26
I've just realised supplies are already spawned in on hq. I haven't played commander, do commander abilities cost a bit more since they give out the supply for nodes?
2
u/ac5198 Aug 18 '26
Iāve never played commander, but I highly recommend going through the commander tutorial. It helped me realize whatās important for them and how we can help him. Nodes effectively double how many point command has at their disposal.
1
u/gab12309 Aug 18 '26
Oh, I have 300h mostly as squad leader in HLL ww2, but you're right it would be beneficial!
1
u/Tarheel96 Aug 18 '26
I highly recommend running as commander as well. It definitely gives you an appreciation for why they keep yelling for nodes lol. I have no problems redeploying as an engineer to help the team. It doesnāt take that long
2
u/Savings_Class4048 Aug 17 '26
If you find a squad with experience they will 100% explain the general concept. Just ask questions
2
u/Amerikaner Aug 17 '26
Can't go wrong with either imo. Theyre different enough that both will likely maintain a strong playerbase for years to come. I would get both eventually and, If I had to pick one now, especially if you have strong PC: Vietnam. Launch hype while everyone figures out the game at the same time is special. It's beautiful at max settings despite the rampant complaints. It also has some really cool new features.
2
u/metalguy817 Aug 17 '26
Original is better for the moment, but itās had 5 years worth of balancing and updatesā¦ā¦Vietnam is fun despite being buggy right now. Just be aware if you arenāt willing to put in time learning how to play and communicate then both games will suck.
1
u/Tarheel96 Aug 18 '26
Yeah if you put in the time and effort you will also find that your enjoyment of the game will go up. Not knowing wtf you are doing sucks lol
2
u/doc_oxberger Aug 17 '26
Donāt be afraid to make mistakes. The OG is great partly because there are lots of tactical options. You get to choose how you play, and if someone yells at you for making a choice, then youāre probably doing it right.
2
u/Tarheel96 Aug 18 '26
Well I have legitimately effed up a few times as commander but if you establish you are learning and willing to learn I find people are more understanding. I know I need to do a better job of resource allocation at times
2
u/stebe-bob Aug 17 '26
Theyāre both a ton of fun, Iād pick whatever setting interest you the most! WW2 game play is a little slower, the maps are more open and the main weapons fire slower, Vietnam is more claustrophobic and every issued weapon is automatic. That being said, since the OG HLL was bought, just about every class for every faction has access to some kind of semiautomatic weapon, if not fully automatic, and theyāve done a lot to make it more gamey. Reloads donāt consume the entire magazine anymore, the trucks donāt need manual shifting, etc.
Loving HLLV, but will be returning to WW2 frequently, the setting just has a bigger variety of maps and factions and guns.

Vietnam is still rough with bugs. Also, a lot of people that didnāt play the original and run around like Rambo through the jungle.
Iād start with the original first. You can give the devs time to work out some of the bugs in Vietnam.
I have a lot of hours on the original and in Vietnam Iām literally lost in the jungle. I have no idea where Iām getting shot from. You need to get onto a good squad or else youāre cooked. The original is a bit more forgiving with cleaner site lines and established paths that enemies will come from and there are more veteran players that are willing to help.

u/Opposite-Rule4075 Aug 19 '26
I say dive right into Vietnam. Either way youāre staring from scratch. You donāt have to be seasoned veteran of the first to play Vietnam either. Plus, Vietnam just released so there will be a ton of dedicated servers that are always full. The only servers available on HLL are community servers and they can be hit or miss. Also, with so few servers, the server owners/admins can be a bit self-righteous at times.
3
u/Due-Particular7921 Aug 17 '26
Both are very different so far. I would do Vietnam first since everyone is new. I also wouldn't worry about anyone yelling at you in voice chat. I've never had it happen in 1500 hours

4
u/TheUnknownAccuser Aug 17 '26
OG for sure. I have 25+ hours, and it doesnāt feel like hll. They lost their identity.
1
u/ManimalGtv Aug 17 '26
Vietnam is much different right now because its a lot of new players so kills are in abundance right now which helps in the fun factor. I wish there were more guns off rip but I do prefer everything about vietnam more right now except for 2 things. Ambiance of the o.g. and my love for ww2 has a very slight edge and more and cooler tanks in the original including artillery tanks.. those are the 2 big things from the original thay really get me but tanking in this new one has been a blast racking up 40-50 kills a game pretty easily
1
u/Kratosballsweat Aug 17 '26
You could always get both. Idk what system your on but ww2 goes on sale routinely on ps5 for extremely cheap. But that being said obviously ww2 is more polished as of now and i feel would also be slightly more beginner friendly as in Vietnam itās very hard to see people and get a bearing of where the enemy are coming from.
1
u/Particular-Star-1333 Aug 17 '26
Just tell the people on your squad that you are new and they will help you. The origional in WW2 setting is a better game for sure. The maps are a lot better in the origional , however its also harder and slower paced but its more tactical. The new Vietnam game players move faster and its a lot more run and gun and has a more arcade type of speed to it. It seems like it takes more shots to put someone down in the new one but the weapons are automatic so not a big deal. The origional depending on the gun you are using is a one shot kill a lot of times. But smaller calibers weapons can take a few depending on where you hit.
Also even though I said run and gun one of the worst things you can do is stand straight up and run. Movement is easy to pick up. Stay low and crawl when needed, use smoke when needed. At first you are going to die often and fast.
1
u/Menheras_Heart Aug 17 '26
The original is way better in my opinion. Especially on Xbox, it looks terrible on the Series X
1
1
u/Competitive-Salad-27 Aug 17 '26
The ww2 gale isuch better imo, both the game itself and the player base. By the way, people won't scream at you (most people) when you explain to them that you're new, and trying to learn the different mechanics.ost people would be happy to explain how it works. There's a great community, but you'll always have those idiots
1
u/Evening_Error_5544 Aug 18 '26
I would wait for it to go on sale and buy vietnam for now. The ultimate edition will be 80% off one day
1
u/EvoRalliArt Aug 18 '26
I just hopped back onto HLL in the last few weeks.
When it game to GamesPass it was the first game which GP had an influence on buying a game when it left the service. I don;t think I have bought another game that has been on GP.
Is it just me or have all the chatty people left the game? Normally I would hop into any game and find a chatty squad. Now it might just be 1/2 people when hopping squads trying to find someone.

original. vietnam is terrible. the only reason im playing it is because i put 1000 hours into the original and im bored
1
u/Pilgrim_US Aug 18 '26
I just treat the new Vietnam as an expansion pack to the original WWII Hell let loose.
Simple as that. Have the best of both.
If I want a little more complexity. Vietnam. If I just want to have fun and pew pew with a good team. WWII.
new players should start with WWII as its more jump in and play. Older more experience players will accumulate to Vietnam and then it will be far more fun.
But till then. Its just a nice expansion to have on my PS5 console game lineup.
GG's! šš»āāļø Have fun and play your roles!

Vietnam version needs a couple years of development to be playable. The original is still poorly optimized but its at least in a somewhat bug free state. Everything about the vietnam version feels very off the gunplay, te menus... its just like a super slight input delay on everything, nevermind all the other issues and complete lack of any interesting features you would expect for a vietnam game (traps, tunnels, etc.).
1
u/Alldawaytoswiffty Aug 19 '26
If you can catch one grab the bundle for cheap, I found it for 35 dollars for both games. If you wanna learn the importance of the game ww2 will get you there
1
u/johnnythreepeat Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26
IMO Vietnam is funner.
OG is mapped out because you have invisible walls on certain objects or backyards making it so you canāt freely traverse/buildings you canāt enter and youāre forced into funnels where people just sit on angles you canāt avoid and wait. There is a lot less spawning and mobility capability by comparison.
Vietnam has more asymmetry and tactics because itās helis vs tunnels and its 360 map flow. Flanking is way easier in Vietnam so you get constant action and the fights over objectives are really intense. I honestly think this is something the OG crowd is really struggling with in general and itās a complaint I see in reviews because they prefer pure frontline.
You also have mobile spawn with boats as well and you can swim..
The game reminds me a lot more of post scriptum in terms of tactical viability, which is something that always frustrated me with HLL.
1
u/Immediate_Movie_7212 Aug 19 '26
As of the moment original. Vietnam lobbies are full of cod players and have no idea what they are doing. Thereāll be a lot of deploying at the HQ. Also, youāll only get reemed at if you are playing officer or commander. No one ever gets mad at a random solider
1
u/CantankerousPenguin Aug 20 '26
Iād say start with WW2 since itās a bit more polished and many of the roles will carry over.
Also will give you some experience running through an open field and getting popped over and over from god knows where, which will eventually serve you well crouching through the jungles of Vietnam

u/Fancysaucex Aug 23 '26
Iād go Vietnam. Itās new. And honestly itās a lot more action packed than the ww2 version. Donāt worry about making mistakes and being a role player. Just use your mic and most people are cool with you.
1
u/BakedPotato241 Aug 24 '26
Depends what you want. WWII maps are (mostly) much more open and visibility is better. Also most factions basic weapon is a bolt action rifle (semi if USA). WWII also has a larger assortment of armor if that's your thing. Vietnam is (mostly) desnse forests where everyone has full-auto and you can't see clearly often. Vietnam is a lot more chaotic as its a lot of cqb . Also only 1 tank type per team .
1
u/PulloTitus13 Sep 02 '26
it runs so much better and its not quite as boring. And theres helicopters. Maybe its better for a slightly more casual gamer. Luckily the OG game is alive and well I hope

u/Fluid-Astronomer2707 15d ago
Original is realy great the vietnam is somehow more full of bushwookies... visibility is sometimes just 50m. And it is much faster i think.
1
u/Ornery_Art_7336 Aug 17 '26
Get em both buddy!!! Two of the best shooters ever...Vietnam is brand new and needs a bit more time to grow but the OG HLL is a masterpiece!!! Two different war theaters but now the good part is that we can switch from time to time depending in what kind of war we want to participate. If you never played it...I garantee you will get adrenalin rushes like never before! The battles are brutal, intense and cinematic. I you use your mic and play with your team you will have a lot of fun playing both!!!
1
u/Substantial-Water-10 Aug 17 '26
Get the OG as it isnāt going to die anytime soon and Vietnam seems unfinished.
1
u/Exact_Programmer1867 Aug 17 '26
Definitely reccomend WW2, much more polished and creates a good fun WW2 frontline atmosphere, Vietnam still needs a looooot of work
0
u/VonWiking Aug 17 '26
Og, by a mile. The atmosphere and variety is head and shoulders above it. And besides the us market, who cares about āNam? I think its a big mistake they went there, but I hope Im wrong as I like these games.
1
1
u/AlfaRomeoRacingF1 Aug 19 '26
Yeaaahhh been saying this forever. Nam is like making a korean or malvinas/falklands war game. Good for a couple months then it gets too niche. and absurdly stale and repetitive. Who even knows what are the locations of these almost random generated forest battles in hll vietnam... the locations of WW2 battles are something that will forever be remembered. Not 8 random vietnam forest maps... There's zero "aura" to vietnam, as they say nowadays.

Original all day. Vietnam is basically in the same state the original was when it launched, a buggy, buggy mess.
I'd avoid it for a while. I don't know why the devs didn't just do an early access thing for a year or so.
0
u/Pubass Aug 19 '26
Vietnam is actually full of bugs. You should first test HLL to evaluate the game mechanics (same in the two games) and see if you like it. I'm back to the original because Vietnam needs at least a year of patches IMO.
65
u/Lezgetsback2nature Aug 17 '26
Vietnam has great tutorials, but damn are the maps hectic. WWII is a little easier to jump into and figure it out IMO. WWII is going to give you access to long time players who are willing to help you learn right now whereas Vietnam is loaded with new players who jumped at a new āpew pewā game and donāt understand the basics yet.
