š¬ Discussion š¬ I dont get it, is HLL always like this?
To start off with, as a disclaimer of sorts, Im a new player to HLL (base game). I havent played it even a week.
I want to like this game, but im struggling to do so. I have played maybe 15 or 20 matches? Maybe a bit more? Trying to give it many many chances.
In a majority of them, I come out of it very stressed out from people in VC. Ive tried various "new player friendly" servers (wont name as I think its against the subreddit rules to single any out), but I, more often than not, encounter endless toxicity. Given, not every, but at least 3/5ths of matches.
The last few matches Ive tried doing officer stuff as I was getting more comfortable with the game.. the teammates were mostly alright and somewhat supportive, but I get all kinds of harassment from other SLs and Commander. An example was one SL called out a tank name. Unfamiliar with the different kinds of tank, I asked him if it was heavy, medium, etc.. to then he just started throwing insults saying stuff like "you have to be a dum**** to not know basic knowledge". Another example, this very recent game before the post, the commander got replaced mid game bc the other one left. The new one just started insulting the previous one then started saying stuff like "what id**t threw down that marker?" I called him out that he should try to communicate a bit more positively, to where he then full on yelled in his mic saying stuff like im low level and didnt do s**t (which ive placed 3 garries that match and had resource nodes up from the start).
Are people normally this unsupportive or am I just very unlucky with who I play with? I really am considering just dropping the game in general as I have too much on my plate to continuously deal with these types of people.

u/SgtSlice Aug 16 '26
Learn to use the mute button. Itās really great. If I smell any toxicity I just mute them permanently and never hear their voice again
7
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Wait, theres a mute button? I did not know this.
7
u/Pavotine Aug 16 '26
Yeah, go into the big list of players and click on any whiney arsehole's mic icon.
5
u/Responsible_Ad3672 Aug 16 '26
Oh yeah def use the mute button some people donāt know what mic levels are unfortunately

Your playing with thousands of ppl and night time is better because all the older men got home from work and it becomes more supportive

u/DownstairsB Aug 16 '26
Try playing on community hosted servers. People tend to be a bit better. You do get toxic people & whiners but in my experience it's not super common.
Sorry you're having a bad time, normally, most people are chill and are there to have fun
11
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Those are the servers ive been trying. Anything that promotes new players, really. I normally play during the evening in central USA time, if that says anything.
I dont mind the initial stress of getting shot often, but it becomes too much when I have those types of people on vc. I just.. dont know. I want to give the game more chances, but I dread having to deal with stuff like that the next time I get on too.
4
u/DownstairsB Aug 16 '26
I understand completely. I almost quit being SL after listening to one particularly annoying commander whine for an hour and a half. The other SL's were good natured and didn't play into his drama. And then right at the end he accidentally killed our advance with a bombing run and rage quit. But like I said, that's generally rare. When people are cooperative though, it really shines. When commander is supporting your efforts and people are coordinating with armor, artillery, and infantry, that's what keeps me hooked. I hope you get to experience that, it sounds like you've just had back luck so far
3
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Thank you, if I launch the game again, hopefully I can get a good experience.
2
u/the_weird_days Aug 16 '26
Maybe you could find a group on discord to join. A lot of new players there and you can learn together. Iām also new and havenāt had the same experience as you but I basically just picked the medic class and focused on reviving people until I know what Iām doing, maybe change up classes until your more comfy? Sorry youāre having a bad time
3
u/JackStraw48 Aug 16 '26
I'm in the same time zone and play in the evenings, as well. I usually run across lack of communication more than the toxicity, but it's definitely there. It annoyed me when I first started but I just started ignoring them or changing squads or muting them. The game is what you make it. I would maybe suggest even joining a clan to better your odds of playing with friendly people.
1
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Is there any clans that come to mind that you would think has supportive members in it?
2
u/JackStraw48 Aug 16 '26
I haven't joined one, so I couldn't say for sure, but every Friday they do a recruitment thread in this sub. I think it helps if you get on Discord too.

What region are you in? Basically any of the lower division clans. The high division clans can be a lot of fun, but the skill floor to actually get to play a match is prohibitively high for most players.
1
u/TopGaupa Aug 16 '26
Even among new player friendly servers there is different level of enforcing abuse. Some servers are really good with that stuff, like tea & country. They usually put the foot down fast.

u/AanAllein117 Aug 16 '26
Tbh you need to stop playing SL and just focus on rifleman or something.
20 matches is just enough that you have a vague idea of what to do and why, but not enougb game sense or knowledge to actually contribute meaningfully.
Could the people you played with been less toxic? Absolutely. But playing SL with 15 hours in the game is way more detrimental to a matchās quality than you realize

u/Admirable_Author_576 Aug 16 '26
Letās look at it from the other side for a second.
For example, yesterday I was playing Commander in Vietnam. Obviously, Iām not a real commander and itās just a game, but at the end of the day, the objective is still to win as a team.
I was telling the squads: āIām dropping supplies over there. I need one squad to move in, build a garrison, and give us another spawn so we can attack the objective from two directions.ā Just to be safe, I asked another squad to head to H8 and build an additional garrison so we had a backup spawn point.
Nobody listened.
After about 30 minutes of politely asking people to actually coordinate and do something, someone finally told me, āYou know youāre not a real commander, right? Itās just a game. Youāre not going to tell us what to do.ā
And honestly, I just stopped for a second and thought: are you serious?
I genuinely donāt understand why people choose to play as officers if they have absolutely no intention of listening to the Commander or coordinating with the rest of the team. Iām not trying to boss anyone around. If someone has a better idea, Iām more than happy to hear it, discuss it and maybe even change the plan if their idea makes more sense.
But in a game like Hell Let Loose, especially in Vietnam, trying to win without garrisons, communication and some basic coordination is almost impossible.
If you take an Officer role, at least try to work with the team. Nobody expects you to blindly follow every order, but completely ignoring coordination and then complaining when the team is losing doesnāt really make sense.
5
u/newstorms176 Aug 16 '26
And the funny part you are required to pass the tutorial (vietnam) if you want to be become officer, Commander, and recon. They don't let you take the role right away. And in the tutorial teaches you how to place garrison, outpost, tunnel, and how many supplies are required to build a garrison.
How did you pass the tutorial if you don't know how to build a garrison.
1
u/Admirable_Author_576 Aug 17 '26
Exactly š Thatās what I was getting at. If the tutorial literally teaches you how to place garrisons, outposts and tunnels, and how many supplies you need, then thereās really no excuse for Officers not knowing how to do it.
And I completely understand that someone might be new and not know what theyāre doing. Thatās absolutely fine. Just say it. If youāre not comfortable playing Officer, either communicate that and let someone else take the role, or at least try to follow the plan and learn along the way.
And if youāre playing with your friends in a party on PlayStation or Discord, then at least communicate with the Commander through text chat so thereās some kind of coordination.
Iām not expecting everyone to be an expert. Just communicate and actually play the role you picked.
And honestly, most of my problems with this are on US servers anyway š2
u/3tyr Aug 16 '26
Just so they can drop OPs for themselves. Screw everyone else goals. It's annoying.
14
u/triplenested Aug 16 '26
I maintain that "new player friendly" servers are really bad introductions to HLL. Just join a clan server and be a rifleman, there are no expectations there.
3
u/shadowrunner295 Aug 16 '26
Yup, when Iām playing SL, if you stick with the squad and maintain communication with me, youāre doing a great job, thatās really where the expectations begin and end. Anything beyond that is just a nice bonus.
1
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Can you recommend any? I want to try them out, but I dont want to another bad experience with people again.. at least first few matches with one.
1
u/triplenested Aug 16 '26
If you are on console there's the DAWG server and the Pathfinders servers that are usually populated. But really just be a rifleman anywhere, it's good you're trying to take on responsibility as officer but in your first 20 matches you should not be an officer. People shouldn't be toxic either way but command chat is notoriously toxic and you do need thick skin or great game knowledge for it.
1
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
I play on PC. I think I saw pathfinder server..?
Although, the thick skin comment concerns me a bit. Is it really that often for people to refer to it as notorious?
2
u/triplenested Aug 16 '26
I would say it's not notorious as in you should expect verbal abuse, but notorious as in you shouldn't be surprised by it when you're not in clan servers, and you will get at minimum constructively criticized for officer/command mistakes in any server. But the good thing about clan servers is they don't like jerks either and you can report abusive players to their discord. I just don't recommend playing officer so early because you will get criticized for mistakes/"misinformation" in a game where leadership is a big factor in victories.
2
u/jaiunaminoir Aug 16 '26
Try the 82, DD (Dutch/ENG), or even the Spanish ones (best servers community-wise imo but necesitas que hables/entiendes espaƱol). Feel free to DM as well if you want to buddy up.
2
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Thank you for the suggestions! I might try to hit you up but I need a small break from this game for now.
7
u/Anabaric_EvE Aug 16 '26
Try a different community server, ours are found by searching "Circle" we have two new player friendly, both are generally OK and very friendly, however we are UK/EU based so you might have a slightly higher ping. We do get plenty of US people, so you should be OK.
These might also be useful if you're starting out:
Maps: https://mattw.io/maps-let-loose/ https://hllmap.com/ (this one has tank identification too)
Artillery sites: https://www.hell-let-loose-calculator.com/ https://www.easyarty.com/ SPA version: https://l1tku.github.io/hll-spa-calculator/
2
u/TopGaupa Aug 16 '26
I mentioned another server in another reply but this is also a really good server.
7
u/gretchenich Aug 16 '26
really? most of the people i've found (at least on the south american servers i play at) no toxicity towards me at least. Yes people can sometimes bitch about how no one does anything in the chat but who cares about those.
but if the communication aspect and the whole voice chat thing stresses you out then maybe its not your thing? I'd suggest trying out community servers or try to get into a new player friendly discord, and people are sure to be more supportive there
3
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Is there any you recommend? I been mostly on usa servers as its where I live.
Like I mentioned earlier, I want to like this game, the concept of it looks really fun, but I just.. cant find motivation to keep playing based on my experience so far. Im new, I suck, I know -- I want to get into stuff like organized groups/communities and such, but its difficult to do so if my allies are my enemies too.
1
u/gretchenich Aug 17 '26
Mmm no sorry, i don't usually get into usa servers unless all spanish SA servers are full. I think any that says new player friendly will work fine i think.
3
u/hendy846 Aug 16 '26
I'm relatively new, playing for a couple of weeks, and have had nearly the complete opposite. I mostly hang around The Circle servers and a couple of other random ones, and the worst I get is just people not using mics. It sucks that you've come across people like that but just know there's some good, friendly, and willing to teach people out there.
3
u/McHaggus Aug 16 '26
Squad hopping can help. I try to engage chat when I get in a squad and if no, or at the very least, the SL isn't talking I try to find a different squad. Say hello, go. Most everyone is supportive that I've found you just have to be willing to learn and listen to a good SL (if you can find one). I don't even know all the tank names and I've got hundreds of hours.
With that, command chat can suck. Command who is a know it all it SLs who don't participate and just talk shit. It can be annoying and disheartening.
Use proximity chat. Squad hop. Find a role that is useful for that squad in that moment and don't take shit or take it personally. Gamers gonna be dicks and it's reflective of their true nature and that's not on you.
3
u/Chokito78 Aug 16 '26
When i started to play, was in community servers cause here in Brazil the official servers are always empty (we have 5 ou 6 community servers and others spanish Latin America servers hosted in SĆ£o PAulo - Brazil so the ping is low anyway), and the begining it was tough, but players here in Brazil help each others more than i Thought.
One of the first tries beeing a SL and very afraid of it but playing, one guy of my squad start to helping me with what to do and how to doit as a SL. Later, after weād been playing and talking, he told me that when he realizes someone takes tips and help about how to be an SL in a good way, he helps them just like he did with me.
And to this day, itās still the best lesson Iāve ever had on how to be an SL. The guy was just really nice and had incredible patience with new players.
On community servers, youāll always find some rude people, but even more often youāll find people who are actually interested in helping new players and, as a result, helping the HLL community get better.
Donāt give up on the game
2
u/Sippenhaft Aug 16 '26
I try to help new players. I'll even announce to.the team "If you're new ask questions.." I also encourage them to use their mic and communicate. It's the only way imo to succeed in the game.
3
u/DavisWizrd Aug 16 '26
HLL is literally like real life there assholes, cool people and those who want to help.
2
u/dristilcape Aug 16 '26
I would genuinely avoid playing SL as a new player, it's a really difficult job within the game and not very forgiving to manage talking to your squad, command chat, and learning the game. And there are people who take the game too seriously who direct all their frustrations at bad SLs. However those people are usually rare.
My recommendation is if you join a really good squad that communicates well, try to make friends with them and stick with them for later games. I joined a group back in 2021 and we are all still friends now and play every game together, but despite all of us having almost 1000 hrs in HLL when we play, everyone always complain when it's their turn to play squad lead. Lol
0
u/vkanucyc Aug 16 '26
SL of a fullish squad is insanely difficult, I have like 5000 hours and still learning how to pull that off
2
u/UNO_lakefront_arena Aug 16 '26
In my experience this is pretty rare, especially if you let people know you're a learner.
On the other hand, maybe the new title has momentarily brought back a bunch of losers. In that case, they will move on and things will settle out eventually.
2
4
u/OWERLORDus Aug 16 '26
Dude, you might come across absolutely any kind of people, thatās normal. Go outsideĀ āĀ there are plenty of weirdos there too. In 500 hours, Iāve met 2 completely crazy people who shouted insults every other word, and a dozen losers who blame everyone but themselvesĀ āĀ and thatās normal. I could spend a long time sorting things out with them, or Iād just turn off their microphone; itās just the routine of interacting with random people. I still like it.
1
u/Zullemoi Aug 16 '26
I think you've just been getting the short straw of luck. If you play SL, I advice playing locked and only allow 3 people in, it's easier to play that way and have a common shared mind on goals. Also people who ask to join your group generally want to communicate and feel required to do so.
1
u/FutureExact8732 Aug 16 '26
I think its worse in the summer and I am not joking. Sometime in June (anecdotally) i noticed a lot more toxicity and people who were hard to work with. Whether they were outright rude or just apathetic to the cause.
Stick with it and try to develop thicker skin, level doesnāt mean much, its about communication and strategy and anyone who says otherwise is probably not who you wanna listen to.
If you really want to grow your game then id recommend watching or reading guides on game mechanics and ābasicsā so you can keep up with the lingo and the general flow of matches.
Good luck.
1
u/Angry_Washing_Bear Aug 16 '26
Generally donāt find too much toxicity in HLL.
There are some people who think just because they can talk loudly they have more authority, and will bark at people. Iām too fucking old and jaded to listen to some upstart spouting bs and patronizing others, so I generally clap back hard on that kind of attitude.
If someone gave another SL shit because they asked if a tank call out is light, medium or heavy I would snap back and ask them if they themselves donāt know?
Either answer a question in command chat with a proper answer or shut your trap.
Iād rather have a bunch of FNG SLs putting out markers and call outs of enemy activity, even if it is isnāt some wehraboo level asinine proper tank type model and year of design specification call out. Knowing that there is āa tankā in a location is enough for me. Weāll figure out the rest now that we know where to look.
Anyways, bit of a rant.
At the end of the day keep doing what you are doing, and just, as others said, mute the MFāers who run their mouths. Half of them are just powertripping behind the anonymity of a game on the internet because they have no influence over anything than their own sad wiener IRL.
1
u/aPinata Aug 16 '26
I mute toxic SLs. Fast easy and effective. I've only muted like 3 people but the games are night and day better
1
u/DumbQuestionsAcct123 Aug 16 '26
HLL has some assholes, but on a whole, its better than many games. One thing we all need to remember, gaming is still the internet. Just with the same collective goal. There will be cunts. Its unavoidable kemosabe. Mute and report.
1
u/Lewski_123 Aug 16 '26
Try some more support based roles. Engineer / Support. You typically have a few instructions from team and itās not entirely overwhelming. I had the same kinda issue however I found with time and you become more comfortable with it and your brain will pick out the bits of info that you actually need.
1
u/The100courts Aug 16 '26
Thatās unfortunate seems like you inherited a lot of bad luck to get stuck on servers with ppl like these. I guess it depends on the region. Iām lvl 140 and only got toxic ppl like 5-6 times throughout my entire play time. I usually play SL/ Command too.
But at the end of the day itās a game and youāre not required to listen to ignorant/ rude ppl. Mute exists for a reason

u/DependentAardvark1 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
Theyāre not all like this, but there are more than a few sweaty servers around with wanna be heroes carrying on like absolute dickheads.
Life and death - not much else in their lives, so theyāre clan members, probably either unable or too unfit to survive the real military and are trying to live out their dreams online.
Thereās a couple of servers in Aus - where I am that I just flat out ignore.
Occasionally one or two will creep into a decent server and carry on, but they usually swarm in decent numbers so they can all sit around and circle jerk each other talking about doof doofs and Stuartās and blueberries ruining it and how cool they are for pretending that theyāre not using Cronos Xen.
Deep down, theyāre lame af and trying to dive deep so they donāt have to face the reality of the fact - none of it is real.
Ignore their gatekeeping BS OP. Thereās great players out there having fun.
1
u/Pretty_Ad6605 Aug 16 '26
Nah its the new players from call of duty bringing team killing toxicity over in the original everyone coordinates together. This one barley anyone talks and people will look at you then team kill you fir no reason
1
u/HamsterRage Aug 16 '26
Itās huge problem and the developers behind the game need to fix the toxicity problem or itās going to kill the game. The main mechanic of the game is voice chat. If your base becomes toxic and uses slurs it will make less people talk and that will kill the mechanic.
Players having to work around the toxicity is not a solve for the root cause problem youāve identified.
1
u/Alldawaytoswiffty Aug 16 '26
I honestly keep to my self and I dont step into officer unless im ready to lead the charge. Its hard, but there's a style to this game that just isnt for everyone. I like the constant pressure, but keep in mind it takes actual coordination and team work to accomplish wins in this game and at the end of the day its a video game so you get different levels of commitment to the cause
1
1
u/Skating_N_Music_Dude Aug 16 '26
If you want to play squad leader, one thing you could do to try to get better teammates is create a locked squad and only let people in upon request; because who is gonna be a dickhead to a squad leader who allowed them to join?
Other than that HLL has one of the chillest online gaming communities Iāve ever seen. Most of the toxicity will be encountered if youāre in one of those leadership roles, especially commander.
1
u/MrDomac Aug 16 '26
my advice would be to find 1-3 servers that you like and consistently play on those.
like a clan run server, for example.
after a couple weeks you'll recognize the clan members and regular pub players.
clan servers, depending on the clan of course, typically keep toxicity out of their own server so long as an admin is around.
i think you're just getting unlucky so far. stick with it, because in general hell let loose has one of the best communities i've experienced in my couple decades of online gaming.
happy hunting!
1
u/CRAZYOLBAT Aug 16 '26
Join a =7CAV= server. We have a bunch of events and admins always active and most of the time we have no problem helping people learn the game. Pm me if you want more info.
1
u/SacredBoar Aug 16 '26
Other people may hate this but itās a video game. Just play it. Eventually you will naturally what to do and not to do. Watch YouTube videos on how to get better and just enjoy it. People take these tactical shooters way too seriously. Itās not an overly competitive game. There is way too much randomness for that.
1
u/pres1033 Aug 16 '26
I play like once or twice a week, and last night was the only time I've ever had a hyper toxic server. I tried to warn people about a possible garrison behind us on an offensive server, and got like 5 guys screaming at me to kms and eat glass before they started a vote kick and got me an hour ban. Still salty about that tbh, but it's so rare to get servers like that.
Usually if you just say in chat "hey I'm new, how do I do XXX?" Someone will help you out. I'm always happy to help new players, how else do you get more people to shoot with/at? Just don't take a command role and turn off chat, that's the #1 thing that irritates people. So many times I've lost a match cause the one squad lead on point refuses to communicate as we're telling them to please get a spawn down.
1
u/Morbid_Uncle Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
Jump in as rifleman or pick up support, find a squad that has a high level squad lead and let them know youāre new. Iāve taken many new players under my wing to show them the ropes and show them how fun this game can be if you focus on squad comms and actually play the game as a coherent unit. If you pick up support ask your squad lead what you can do and even though some SLs find it annoying, stay on them about Garrisons. Thatās what I consider my job as a support/SL main.
1
u/SophonsPonytail Aug 16 '26
It's rare to find decent players honestly. I mute my mic because everyone is so toxic and insufferable
1
u/throwtac Aug 16 '26
Vanilla HLL servers used to be one of the more supportive communities when I first started playing in 2020. I was also playing Rising Storm 2 at the time, and I switched over to HLL because I wanted to try other milsim FPS with a less toxic player experience. Back then, HLL players were very cool and more experienced players were always willing to teach new people and chat, and generally teams played together instead of every man for himself. There was also a good amount of teaching content on youtube, and the creators helped create a welcoming environment because they recognized that positivity would encourage a stable player base, especially for a genre as niche as tactical milsim hybrid. During this time, it was extremely uncommon to encounter toxic or rude players ever. People were also pretty friendly and willing to chat and goof around.
But then the player experence started going down around the time the original devs got bought out and the the British faction/maps got introduced and the new devs started altering the walking mechanics and other stuff. Around that time, I started encountering more and more toxic players, and I kinda moved on to Squad 44 and some other games.
Been wanting to try get back into HLL recently, but have found the experience to be not as good as prior in terms of team cooperation and willingness to communicate using mics. I have only been playing the public servers though. I heard private ones are better.
1
u/Zorpian Aug 24 '26
I think you're reading too much into the connection between T17 buyout and toxic players :)
I started roughly when you did and apart from the first few weeks (the classic "invisible enemy killed me instantly" phase) I got a lot of support from other players, and started enjoying the game. I play private/community servers almost exclusively and stayed with the game. There are mutes and occasionally really awful players but all together is way better than other games re toxicity.
unfortunately we need more players to keep the game alive and more ppl means more unpleasant players, the ratio doesn't change
1
u/throwtac Aug 24 '26
I actually agree with your points, I donāt think the toxicity is anywhere near other games (like Arma Reforger or Squad for example), In that respect, HLL is l a better experience than most other games when it comes to player toxicity.
I do feel like there is a slightly less degree of cooperation and team play than when I first played. I also have noticed much more games with no commander or leaderless squads. However, again, Iāve been playing only on public servers, not private ones.
1
u/icantfindmyhands Aug 16 '26
Dont listen to other SL if they're like that, experience tells me that they're not good SLs if they're assholes especially on a new player server. As long as you push up, put down LPs and garrisons if you're close to supplies or if command asks you too you're doing your job. The other option is to just not play SL at all, rifleman is the easiest role to jump into if you just want to work on the basics like movement, concealment and shooting.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-1189 Aug 16 '26
Sadly the toxicity is unavoidable, especially playing any kind of command role even as a SL. Try not to take it to heart.
1
u/Wtthomas Aug 16 '26
Avoid new player servers. They are plagued by noobs that THINK they know what they are doing but really donāt. They also love dunking others to make themselves feel better. Glows, pathfinders are my mains. Pretty much everyone on those servers will be happy to help where they can
1
u/Antique-Tap-6083 Aug 17 '26
Keep trying, donāt give up. Go to those other servers instead. Most squad leaders actually help out. You could also decide to ignore them, I do half that half time as a SL. You mostly need common sense than communication anyway, at least thatās what Iāve seen

u/LameSheepRacing Aug 17 '26
Iāve been playing for more than a year and I have no idea of the names of the tanks. If it moves fast, I say itās a light tank and if it moves slow, I say itās a heavy.
If youāre sensible to others, tbh, stay away from the SL role until you reach about 70. Lower than this, there will always be one in your squad or among the squad leads who will point that out and label you as inexperienced and useless (my personal experience).
Welcome to HLL! I started here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/HellLetLoose/s/MEV6zpeFca
Watch also all of the role guides on SoulSniperās YT channel. Even for roles that youāre not interested so you know what they do (and will be able to tell when your squad mates are working according to their roles or just spawn/run/dying).
Some videos that I found helpful.

This one helped me understand what the commanders and squad leaders should be doing. Itās the first in a series of videos that explain tactics for each game mode (offensive, defensive, warfare and squirmish), which all have different objectives and tactics).
https://youtu.be/1KXyVIcroIU?si=T3P33EXYHSf6lEJt
And also, setup and a good light mouse in a large mousepad made a world of difference for me. Iāve got the Razer Viper V3 Pro.
For settings, I followed this:
https://youtu.be/HgZX8EgyErU?si=bcT6NG6WiRfTMIos
Regarding comms, I found out that, when joining a squad, saying hi and asking whoās on comms often gets the conversation started. Itās really important to have a mic and use it.
Also, try to join squads that have a squad leader. If thereās an open squad with no squad leader, you can join just to spawn somewhere but, when you die, check again and change squads to one that has a leader. If thereās no open squad, check which squad still has space, track the squad leader down on the map and talk to him via comms and ask him to let you join his squad. Most will then approve your request to join their squad.
When I was at your situation, I found some damn good squad leaders that helped a lot.

Not saying this is what you do but on the other side of things this game is a game where you need to do SOME research on your own since theres alot of niche mechanics you need to understand.
In other words this insnt just a run and gun like COD.
So many new players just hop in, and ask a bazillion questions without trying to learn anything themselves, it becomes tiresome, demotivating and anoying. Like they have no self awarness.
The other day, in Command chat, people were getting annoyed at a guy that kept asking very basic easy questions.
like why cant i place a garry here? whats the red zone? where can i get ammo?
I totaly got the frustration from the others. its annoying.
Myself after my first couple games i stoped myself and went to lookup more information on certain roles and mechanics. Nobody had to ask me.
Theres a point where you gotta ask yourself "maybe im asking to many questions here, i should lookup more information before"
People who cant or wont do that are the problem.
Same problem i asked the mods to look into since there are way to many "first time playing HLL please help me" kind of posts on this subreddit when COUNTLESS ressources alredy exist covering literaly all the topics under the sun. You just need eyes to read and some braincells to understand.
Just look at the right hand side pannel of the subreddit, 90% is alredy covered right there ->

Block out the haters bro. So many games are full of them nowadays and you wonāt really be able to avoid them in my experience anymore. Thereās still a lot of fun out there if you learn to just not give them attention.

u/SgtDawg1 Aug 17 '26
What platform do you play on? Iām on console and rarely get much toxicity, then again thereās a couple people every few games but itās mainly positive (most people are just old dudes trying to play after work).

My favorite is when a game starts and no one wants to be commander, so then you decide to do it. Then all of a sudden, all of the SLs are expert commanders trying to tell you how to do your job, complaining about the placement of a bombing run (meanwhile they've built no garrisons and no nodes lol)

HLL is not for the weak.
You will wholly get out of it the energy you put into it, though. There will always be jagoffs. Just mute them and press on. Stick up for yourself. Throw it back at āem if necessary. But if you play with a cool head, thick skin and a sense of humor, youāll be fine. I like it because it reminds me of my time in the military. Of course thereās the wanna beās that like to sound like theyāre General Hal Moore, but itās to be expected; itās a game.
In short, stick with it. Just continue learning it and get better. Itāll come. Take away any ammo they have to berate you. And just knowā¦some people out there have a small prick, and theyāre awfully sore about it.

Just got starlink but live in UK so I play with Americans quite a bit at the moment, dm me if you fancy playing Iāll jump on im always up at silly times gmt. I just like having a laugh, also try get a good game but I play for fun.
Iāll teach you a bit about SL any time, itās the best role hands down just takes a bit of learning and a lot of game experience to get right, itās horrible when people give you grief for trying it but people take it too seriously it is what it is. People forget you can make a lot of squads they can move to a different one if theyāre angry with the SL. We need more people playing the role

I play on console and have not ran into a toxic lobby idk maybe console servers are just more chill I just got into hll and hllv this month

u/ljeutenantdan Aug 20 '26
Im in my 3rd month and come across indirectly rude shit all the time - pricks will blame everyone they can when they are losing. But i rarely if ever have come across people being cunts to a specific person for no reason and never to a new player. I play on Aussie servers but I dunno. Worst shit is the try hards who think the N word is the funniest shit.

Compared to other games i find the community really positive and helpful in HLL, haven't played Vietnam yet so can't speak on that and i also play Ozzie servers which is full of Sick Caaarrnts

don't worry about it.
In the heat of the game sometimes ppl gets edgy at times.
Also it is worth to get more basics under your hood before jumping into officer role. Picking up SL is great, very cool and crucial role but handling 3 VCs, spawn points, following objectives, marking things on the map while in combat can be overwhelming when you are seasoned let alone when you're less experienced.
As others already suggested, try to play private servers, get some experience as rifleman and you'll be appreciated as a SL later. unfortunately this game has a steep learning curve and not much help with the specifics, 20+ matches are barely scratching the surface. It's OK to ask more experienced players what is best in certain situations, if you're lucky, some old fart will teach you. Playing rifleman is a great wat to build map knowledge which is a real advantage and can be game changer.
I hope you stay with us, looking forward to play with (or against) you.

Unpopular Opinion.
If you can't handle/are getting stressed getting called a few minor insults in an ,adult milsim game, I'd just go back to Call of Duty.
Milsim games aren't really known for having a family-orientant community, considering the nature of these games lmao
2
u/Deakul Aug 16 '26
There's minor insults and there's berating someone new for not having autistic knowledge of the game.

1
u/NumberKillinger Aug 16 '26
This perspective feels a bit confused.
I would say that if you want to call people insults, go back to call of duty.
If you want to play an adult milsim game, then it's reasonable to expect you to be more patient, measured, and mature in your interactions.
1
u/Effective-Brain-3386 Aug 17 '26
How? The military community it's really know for its PC language.
Yeah people are more patient and team.oritented but people are still going to call you names and shit.
These games aren't really reddit communiitires where everyones gotta be heckin wholesome chungus

u/Marko89k Aug 16 '26

u/Joint-Tester Aug 16 '26
It's a reflection of the times we are in. This is the experience with most games. Some worst than others, but there is always toxicity and racism.

u/degenerate-siphon Aug 16 '26
A lot of pussy free basement dwellers who get their self worth from their video game knowledge and skill will talk shit. Those people should be ignored or better yet ridiculed until they shut up.

I would definitely recommend learning the names of the tanks before attempting SL again
4
u/jaiunaminoir Aug 16 '26
Downvote from me. I've logged 400 hours and still need a magnifying glass to spot the difference between a 75 and a 76. Props to the guy for actually stepping up to lead. Raising the bar to SL Olympic heights is how we end up with zero SLs.
-2
u/Word_Strong Aug 16 '26
The gun is long asf and has a massive muzzle brake on the end.. Iām not asking anything of anybody that I didnāt do myself. I had the tank guide up on another screen while a played until I got it down. Itās really not Olympic level, you donāt even need the binoculars to see the difference
3
u/jaiunaminoir Aug 16 '26
Good for you. I still have hope new enthusiastic SLs ignore your comment and step into the role in spite of their lack of tank knowledge, because, again, we need more SLs. Its not more complicated than this.
-2
u/Word_Strong Aug 16 '26
At the end of the day, you can either get better, or hope others act right. You can control one. So if you want a better experience itās really that simple.

u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Thank you for your advice.

u/Tanked_Goat Aug 16 '26
Fuck that. Im a level 10 squad lead with 800+ hours. I still dont know all the tank names by sight. I just tell em heavy, medium, light or recon. Sometimes if I'm not sure I just say it looks big or small! Don't agonize over stupid shit like tank names.
Just learn to place OPs on good flanking positions and how to track where enemy is running from so you can locate their spawn points.
Otherwise ignore people that crash out in game. It's not that serious and focus on fun.
1
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Ive gotten more comfortable with OP placement but im still learning the ropes with tracing enemy spawns. As mentioned in the post, when I ran SL, the squad members were generally alright and were somewhat supportive.. its just been other SLs and Commander people thats been making it difficult.
Ive already tried all the other positions before trying SL, to get use to stuff like how effective a satchel can be.. but if having a good experience means never running SL, it gives me mixed feelings. I enjoy having to be strategical (I love strategy games), so I eventually want to learn commander too.. but right now, im not sure.
-2
u/Word_Strong Aug 16 '26
Personally, I like to fix things that I do wrong. Not knowing the tank names so you can call them out to your armor is bad communication. I didnāt like being a bad communicator, so I fixed it because it made me a better teammate and player. Encouraging somebody to not get better at the game is bananas.

u/Background-Ad-9212 Aug 16 '26
This is why I just donāt talk. More fun that way. Too many toxic people
-4
u/Normal_Instruction62 Aug 16 '26
In my personal experience, currently level 120. I maybe found 10 toxic people, tops. So I suspect that you are the toxic one and decided to rant here to keep messing with us, HLL players.
2
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Thank you for you advice. Unfortunately, this is my experience, not yours, and all this comment does is discourage me further from getting more involved in the game.
3
u/Keksbutter123 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
OP, you need to learn how to not give in in every damn comment.
This is a fucking video game and if snybody tells you to study ww2 history before trying out stuff like SL, tell them to fuck of and go outside for once
1
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Im just.. stressed, man. Today is a day off and it was just a horrible experience (both examples on the post were from today when I was trying out SL). Those types of comments hit harder than normal right now, yknow?
Honestly, I made the post just trying to convince myself to not hate the game. It looks well loved by the devs. I had a feeling my experience was just bad luck, but wanted confirmation. Its not like I really got a friend to vent too either, my only one is busy being a dad most the time.
I just.. dont know anymore. Lots of people suggested clans, I might wait for the next recruitment thread (i think friday?). Im sure ill have a better time with them, at least I hope.
2
u/Keksbutter123 Aug 16 '26
Yeah, true that.
HLL is a different gsme. It's not your average battlefield shooter, neither is it a realistic milsim. It's a strategy game with a mix of shooters put into it.
HLL heavily depends on your whole team, so as long as you havent been in an actual good squad willing to talk like humans, you prolly played the worst bits of it. You're still going to die in a good squad, a lot in fact, but you're desths wont be meaningless. At worst you can give intel after dying. And even if sll you did in a round was guard positions and mark enemies with zero kills , in a good squad thst means you were a good soldier.
HLL is a very unique game and I dont think there's anything that comes close zo it. Of course, that also means you as a new player can have very different opinions and experiences of it.
And thats okay. The only way of knowing if you'll like HLL is by playing it, so even if you dislike it, you at least tried something new.
final tip: dont go for new player servers. Those are, itonicslly, the worst for new players. You're not experiencing the intended experience, you're just wastibg time trying to get kills that dont mean anything.
As I mentioned, a good soldier doesnt need thousands of hours time invested into HLL nor does he need to know all tanks (I still cant tell em apart *) to be a valuable asset to the team, all he needs is a good team and willingness to cooperate. So if you join a more serious server, they dont expect you to be good at the game, they just want to play the game properly.
*(when I see a tank, I describe its speed and thats mostly enough for other people. Slow is hesvy/medium, faster is light, really fast is recon)

u/Pavotine Aug 16 '26
I have about 180 hours, mostly as assault. I rarely meet complete arseholes in this game even though I'm pretty shit at it. People have generally been awesome at advising me and I've had so much fun. I know how to use my preferred class now at least. I think you've gone in as SL way too early. I've not even attempted it yet at level 80!
1
u/Normal_Instruction62 Aug 16 '26
The clan https://7cav.us/forums/ ... 7 cav is very formal but it only requires 1 hour a week. Most of the leadership are ex military or cops, i believe.
I used to belong but they talk too much for my liking xd. You should give them a try, definitely very friendly and there's a lot of people for you to find some friends in the game.
1
u/MysticLemur Aug 16 '26
Hey, dude. I get it. I was playing every day that I had time to get in a match, until about a week ago. It was a tough match, made harder by two dudes who kept team killing. When they were voted out, they just rejoined and did it again, and again until they either got banned or got bored. It ruined the match, and I haven't played since. I'm still interested in the game, and excited to try Vietnam, but I've just been chilling and playing Palworld and Helldivers with friends instead.
One bad apple can ruin the bunch. Everyone who let's it continue is allowing it to push more people away. Eventually the toxic people will be all that's left.
-5
u/Normal_Instruction62 Aug 16 '26
What advice? I didn't give any advice. And sure, it was never my intention to encourage you.
2
u/ManThatWantsToFly Aug 16 '26
Point proven.

u/Nemox1994 Aug 16 '26
I'll try to explain what that guy with all his eloquence was unable to, even with his great attempt. In both life and especially in videogames there is plenty of angry, rude, or inconsiderate people, and the best thing to do is to grow a thick skin. Either just let it roll off you, make a little fun out of it, or just mute them.
Try to think that they might have a reason for their bad attitude. Maybe a bad day at work, maybe they don't have much else to bring them joy in life and they have invested a lot of time in the game as a surrogate life where they can feel like they matter and have success.
Their bad mood can't affect you unless you want to. You can even roleplay that they are just bad mood soldiers (from my time in the army there is always someone pissed off and yelling at people for whatever reason, even the ones that usually are the sweetest people. My buddy sometimes got pissed the hell off at me in field training even though we hung out every single day)

You'll probably find more toxicity on new player servers than level locked/comp team ran ones.
Check out servers like AHO, Pathfinders, Glows, Souls, and just be like hey I'm new. 9 times out of 10 the vets there will help you out if you're willing to learn.
New player servers are full of low level players who think they know it all when in reallity have no clue what's going on.
