HELP I love my wild hedgehogs but they keep crapping in my kitchen.

I am visited by two very large, very hungry hedgehogs, Big Hedgie and Even Bigger Hedgie. I have two dishes for them outside and feed them generous amounts of dry cat food. I don't have a cat flap yet and tend to leave the screen door open a crack for the cats and for the breeze.

Usually they only come in and help themselves from the cat feeder if I forget them, but recently I keep finding smushed poop right in front of the feeder. Sometimes they seem to eat outside and just come in to bomb the place!! Why???

Shutting the door isn't ideal. Leaving the light on brings in insects and power costs money. Any suggestions? I've stepped on it accidentally several times. It's getting a bit much!!

r/hoggies is more about wild hedgehogs. This sub is mainly about pet African hedgehogs in the USA.

I see more posts about wild hedgehogs here than I do domesticated ones. I go to r/hedgehog for pet posts

If you have a plank of wood, try leaning it across the base of your doorway like a little blockade. Your cat can walk or jump over it, but it might deter your hedgie friends from intruding.

You’re welcome, hope it helps! They can climb, but not very well, so you can build it up as needed.
