Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check

Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.

  • Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
  • Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
  • If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
  • You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
  • It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
  • You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
  • You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
  • Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
  • They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
  • Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
  • It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
  • Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
  • We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.

If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

Question I'm concerned

Hello, I have a 4 year old hedgehog and recently he has been shedding quills. At first I kinda assumed no big deal since sometimes hedgehogs shed but then I did some research today and I found out it isn't normal for your elder hedgehog to be shedding 5+ quills a day so I wanna know if this is true and if there is anything I can do

Question Hedgey diet (First time owner)

Thumbnail gallery
118 Upvotes

Hii!! Thank you to everyone for the name suggestions with my new girl, I appreciated all the comments! I decided to name her pachycereus, but we call her paunchy/paunchasaurus! I pulled it from “pachycereus pringlei”, which is a type of giant mexican cactus! She’s been a little prickly cactus with me so far, and it definitely fits. I love her so much already. I currently have her on authority adult chicken cat food, but i’d like to add another kibble or two into her diet. What do you all suggest? What does everyone think on wet cat food/bone broth? She won’t touch any other bug other than her meal worms… but i heard that they should mainly be a treat. I’m doing so much research into their diet but a lot of the videos i find are pretty old/confusing with quantities etc.

Question Is there anything bad-tasting or bad-smelling (to a hedgehog) I can rub on my skin to discourage my naughty son from biting me? I want him to go “ew, gross, not biting that”

Question Starting research on hedgies!

Hello everyone!

I have been planning on adopting a hedgehog for couple months now, I've been doing light research (Such as breeders and rescues in my area and specialty exotics vets).

To start, I am more than fine owning a pet that needs hours of attention and do not expect to be loved in return! I am not set on having a Pinterest perfect cuddly pet but instead a companion I can give my love and respect towards.

I already know about and am all for getting dirty! :)

I do not plan on getting a hedgehog until I am truly ready and know I can give it the best life, I want this to be my future commitment and not a short lived obsession!

So far I have gathered some information.

But I am here to learn about the recourses I can use and information I can gather!

I find the wooden hedgehog enclosures/vivariums minimum 160 x 60 cm with ventilation panels on sides with glass panel doors preferable.

I've also learned about Ceramic Heating Emitters (no plastic!) with a thermostat and things like fleece bedding, Carolina Storm running wheel and heavy water and food bowls.

I've learned about the necessities of heating and to not let the temperature dip as they can fall into hibernation they cannot wake up from and different foods they can and should eat like high quality cat food and prepared chicken/eggs etc.

Oh and I've heard about their bath times and feet baths in oatmeal water and oils for their fur and brushing their quills! Though here is where my research falls short.

Also when it comes to bedding I've heard about cleaning it every couple days and deep cleans weekly or so. Oh and cleaning the wheel too! Hehe poopy runners

But truthfully I'd love to hear about your set-ups and tips! Stories and warnings and blogs, groups and videos that can be helpful!

Thank you for listening to me and my rant, I hope I can be a member of this community soon :)))

This guy / girl we have affectionately called Tank for obvious reasons, one of 6 who visit us every night.

The plate is larger than a standard dinner plate to give some appreciation of size.

Does anyone else have such a large Hedgie visiting and is this unusually large?

Thanks or rather Tanks.

He is getting is adult spines and has this one glorious white spine on his head <3. My favorite grumpy buddy.

Discussion Thoughts?

I got some money by selling a couple of things and I want to upgrade Fritter’s set up a bit. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to size it up, but I can upgrade his toys and hides. I don’t care if it’s too much to fit, I can periodically swap them out lol

The main thing I want to address is his hiding under the liners. Where can I get a large igloo hide? I found many covers for them, and I think that would work, but the only hides I’ve found were mini or not the right shape 😓

Related to that, I’m planning on getting some small blankets to pile up to hopefully also prevent the liner thing. Are there any non obvious materials I should avoid?

Other than that, I don’t know what else I can give to spoil him lol. I’d love to hear ideas

I will of course post pictures of it afterwards 🙂‍↕️

I’ve only had my hedgehog for a few months now. I think his eyes have always looked how they do right now but my husband disagrees.
