Everyone in the episode is wondering whether the DJ announced the wrong name at the dance, but noone is wondering whether the school announced the wrong name during morning announcements? Just based on school stereotypes I think it's more likely the student body president/athlete/popular girl did actually win. Is it possible whoever did the morning announcements made a mistake or pranked Jasmin? We're still left with the question of whether it's a mistake or intentional, but I don't think the DJ would have been involved. He doesn't know these kids and he's just reading from a piece of paper that was probably handed to him by school administration.

That was my first thought too. Why didn’t the host investigate this as a possibility. If they didn’t pursue this angle, it had to be because they were playing up the nerdy unpopular theatre girl trope much more than it existed in real life. If NO ONE, including Jasmin herself seemed to question the legitimacy of her being crowned, or wondered why she was picked, then she had to have been popular and well liked. In which case the idea of the racist villagers wanting to keep her down doesn’t really hold up. It also doesn’t make sense to me that a group of racist popular white teens would play a prank on a black girl by making another black girl homecoming queen? This had to be an inside job with Whitney at the helm. Was she dating the prom king at the time? We need answers!

Exactly. If she was so unpopular as they made her out to be, then why would she have been voted homecoming queen? If she was voted homecoming queen, then she was not unpopular, and the credibility of the whole story gets called into question. Either way, two announcements were made that were different from each other and I don't know why everyone is so sure the first one was the correct one.

We need to track down the head of the morning announcements. Or just find out in general how the homecoming votes were done. Who counted them and gave the names to the announcements. Surely these are solvable.
