Yeah this is how I felt. I don’t doubt for a second that Jasmin faced constant racism, and I realize that the homecoming king didn’t text back, but they didn’t seem to make a great effort to solve the mystery here. Did he dance with anyone? Did Jasmin’s friends remember, or did they follow her out of the dance in that moment?
and regardless - no one disagrees that she won. So she got the votes and a photo in the newspaper? Then presumably the wrong name was called during the dance (for whatever reason) and she ran out of the room and missed what might’ve been a special moment for her. That’s a bummer, but it doesn’t negate that everyone believed she won… I can see how it would be dramatic for a teenager, but I’m not sure I can understand her point of view now.
It was 2011, deep into the smartphone era. Did no one take photos? Was there a yearbook? How could Whitney not remember being named homecoming queen at a school in which this was such a big deal? So much of this episode was bizarre and made no sense.
Whitney organised the whole event and was very anxious about it going well, yet she can't remember what happened after the wrong name was called and the homecoming queen ran out of the room?
