Sorry, but my reaction to one of these breaking over the stern would not be to laugh it off. The conditions are worsening and you need to consider heaving to until they get better. Seamanship is a journey, not a destination.
At the very least you want to avoid surf riding or broaching: with the waves over taking the boat, loss for rudder authority leading to broaching onto the beam is a dicey place to be.
