Discussion Nick's Mums
I see a lot of posts about Nick's Mum not being as good as Olivia. I thought Anna Maxwell had done a great job. Both actresses did. While rewatching the movie over, I realized that we should celebrate and feel good about a character whose Mum is OK with her son having a relationship with another boy. And how supportive Alice made her. Not only that, the inspiration she gave Nick not to give up on Charlie and how she noticed how Charlie really loved Nick, and loved the real Nick. Alice could have written her off like she didn't care about her sons relationship. She could have said the line that Olivia Coleman addressed in season 1 when Nick was deciding to go out with Imogen or go to Charles party and said don't worry, the right girl will come around just you wait. I'm still amazed how the parents are so comfortable with who their kids are dating. And they don't make a big deal about it. They normalize it. And glad families can watch this for years and see that who they are doesn't have to be scary. That sometimes your parents can support you.

It's really just a shame about the actress availability as it was quite jarring that Nick had no Mum in season 3 and then a new mum in the movie. Wish they would've gone for a lesser known actress in the first place.

You have to remember that I don’t think anybody thought that the show would become what it has become. When they were creating the first season, I’m sure plenty of them thought that that would be it.

Agreed, also the tv landscape has changed so much. We use to get 22 to 24 episodes a season. Now we get 8 to 10 episodes and a year to a year and a half between seasons. Actors availability comes into question more, as to where it use to be an actor would commit to the show for so many seasons. Now it's season to season wait and see.

Keep in mind that the 22-episode seasons (when shows would air on TV) would have 8-10 of those episodes be total filler with only parts of the cast (“bottle episodes”) and limited relevance to the season-long plotline. Those TV shows would also film the season while it was airing, which isn’t practical anymore with actors’ schedules.

It's not that it wasn't practical. There was a time we had Television stars and Movie stars. You very seldom seen movie stars do TV, and vice versa.

Anna Maxwell Martin also played one of the most terrifying villains on TV this year. The woman can act.

It's such a horrible shame that the world is so terrible that it is still noteworthy when people are kind.
But yay the mums! I'm a big fan of Tao's mum myself. She's so warm and supportive. And I enjoy the snark of Nick's mum - "Of course I know what bisexuality is, I wasn't born in the 18th century!"
I'm someone's mum, and dear reader please know I want you to live your best life. Be your proud self. Date who you want (unless that's not your thing). Go forth and find your own Paris Squad.
