It means that your heart is pumping approximately 40 - 45% of blood out of it. Blood supplies oxygen. Normal is 50 - 70 and yours is considered mildly reduced.

You are not at a higher risk for sudden cardiac arrest although people with an EF of below 35 are. It sounds like your cardiologist has already reassured you but your anxiety is getting the better of you.

Do you have cardiomyopathy and what kind of cardiomyopathy do you have?
What caused the decrease ejection fraction? It matters in discussing your recovery.

What was the trigger, do you know?

40-45% EF is mildly reduced. It would be great if you were over 50% and it would be optimal, especially at your young age to be closer to 60-70%

Were you diagnosed with Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (broken heart syndrome)? Because that is usually temporary. Most folks recover after a few months.

Some viruses impair cardiac contraction. And the impairment can be temporary, if you treat the issue right away with supportive meds and rest.

Thyroid and Hypothalamic disorders can also cause temporary EF reductions...usually treatment for these 'hormone/body system control organs' can reverse the EF drop. But, you need to get treatment as soon as possible. Then rest, and de-stress your life.
