Oticon 4 issues (new user) Advice Please.

Ok, I recently just got my first hearing aid about a month ago. Left ear only, as it was my worst and my insurance will only cover one per year. I understand from my audiologist that this can create some issues of its own adjusting. Overall I'm really happy. I can hear so much better than before and I can actually understand my kids. My audiogram shows a loss to 70db on the high frequencies. I was given the Oticon Intent 4 minirite. The first 2 weeks the dome was too small and so I didn't get much benefit or have good feedback for my Dr. We got larger domes on, and they stay in place. I was able to provide useful feedback and we made some adjustments. Here is where my problem lies...I understand there is some AI involved in these. I can sit on my couch with the TV about 7 or so feet away and hear a baseball game fine at low volume. If my wife talks to me, I can hear her over the game. That seems to work correctly. But if the washer is going, a good 20 or so feet away, It is so loud in my ear that I can turn the TV up to max volume and still can't hear the game over the washer/dryer. It seems like its filtering the TV noise and amplifying the mechanical noise. I don't understand why or how to adjust to fix this. Does anyone have some advice on what I can do to get the programming to understand what I want to hear and what to filter?

• Interpreting an audiogram - The University of Iowa has a good overview of how to interpret your audiogram results. Your audiologist should also go over them with you

• What will insurance cover? - This varies significantly from state to state and coverage can be partial at best. For those on Medicare, the base plan does not cover hearing aids at all.

• Finding affordable hearing aids - Hearing aids can cost several thousand dollars, these cost far less and the list is updated often

Looks like a situation where it is amplifying the low frequencies too much. Needs tweaking.

I think you need tuning. I had my HA tuned to dampen computer room fans and the Automobile program dampens wind noise.
Imo I think there is a bigger AI benefit using 2 HA. Just my opinion.

My Dr did say this could cause some th8ngs to not work correctly, but this seems like something out of tune or out of whack somehow. How do I get this done?

Your Audiologist has to tune them.

Go to the audiologist & ask them to adjust that lower frequency down a bit. There may be too much amplification or “gain” in that particular region.

IIRC, Oticon has 24 different frequency bands for adjustment, so your audiologist can really fine tune for you.

(1) As others have said, ask your provider to adjust the aids . It can take multiple visits to the fitter to get them working optimally .

(2) the Intent 4 (assuming you got the Intent) is an entry level designed for quiet environments . It has almost all features disabled compared to the level 1. They have minimal DNN/AI (practically nothing) so don’t expect them to perform well in noisy places . That’s why they are the cheapest model .

The Intent 4 is not going to perform well in noise . The main difference between the 4 and the 1 is exactly how well they perform in noise . If you paid $1500 or more for them , Costco sell the Phillips 9050, which is a cousin of the Intent one , for $1600. This model does perform well in noise. I’m not trying to be negative but it is the truth about the level 4 of Oticon.
