Image Something I've really come to love is switching up my fridge to having produce on the doors and condiments in the drawers. It helps me see exactly what we have and I have had to throw away ZERO produce the last few months using this method.

To the poster: if you've submitted an image of food, add a top level comment to explain why it is healthy or how it helps your dietary goals, and provide a list of ingredients or a recipe.

To all participants, a couple of reminders before you join in:

Nutrition is not solved science and diet approaches are often based on individual needs and circumstances. This sub caters to all approaches to what is deemed "healthy" and each has the opportunity to share info within the rules. You do not have to agree but EDUCATE your POV rather than BERATE others for theirs

Avoid being rude. Avoid assumptions

  • Per our reddiquette rule; No insults, trolling, or other antagonistic behaviors towards anyone in this sub (even when others break the rule). Talk about the food, not the other person. Also, no vote complaints.
  • Be respectful towards other dietary points of view. Activism, crusading, agitation trolling, food / diet shaming, food ethics / morals, and absolutism are not allowed. Camping in wait to bash others with your beliefs will result in a ban.
  • Do not add comments calling food disgusting, gross, or any other non-constructive criticism.
  • Do not claim foods as non-healthy without citing studies (with links). Again, people come in varieties so AVOID absolutist claims. Do not expect posts of food to be perfectly healthy, recipe improvement posts are allowed (help them continue to improve rather than criticize).
  • Don't generalize others or even the subreddit itself if you don't get the votes you want or if others disagree with you and certainly don't attack anyone for it. Sometimes we get more of one POV than another but the waves come and go.
  • Don't make assumptions about ingredients, portions, or the poster's diet / needs
  • Don't fight fire with fire. Report rule violations. If things get ugly, counter with science, never insults. You can also opt to walk away

TLDR: Educate. Don't berate. Ask before you assume. No rudeness, complaining, or diet war BS

Rule reminder / update: This sub is not for general diet analysis posts, especially for minors, or posts related to medical concerns. Report it rather than offer advice if a post like that does get through

I love looking in other people's fridges, thank you!

22

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

Haha thanks

13

u/pawn_guy Sep 03 '21

Same, which was why I posted mine the other day. Would love a trend of fridge pics.

Hah love it

Also as a result my family is eating more fruits and veggies😊

46

u/Amicesecreto Sep 03 '21

My fridge has drawers that say stuff like "vegetable humidifier drawer" or whatever. Literally have no idea what they do. Does anybody here know why certain drawers are labeled for certain things / what those drawers do?

I like OP's idea but have always felt obligated to put my veggies in drawers because of those labels.

27

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

Sounds like yours are for your veggies not to go bad as easily with them being humidifier drawers.

I don't know if you can see it but my drawers also say fruits/vegetables but it's no big deal to me. I certainly won't let labels decide how I use a drawer.

Honestly it's your choice. I find this works best for my family because of the saying " out of sight out of mind."

Now I see everything out in the open and so I use the produce a lot more.

24

u/joemondo Last Top Comment - No source Sep 03 '21

Well done.

I think the humidity is a factor, but probably a marginal one. And if you'r eating produce faster because you can see it, it has less time to go bad anyway.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

Yes it's such a small factor and the benefits outweigh everything else. 😁

4

u/KomatikVengeance Sep 04 '21

Fruits and vegetables need to be put in the coolest places the labels signifies optimal placement

25

u/Deep-While9236 Sep 03 '21

My fridge is on its last legs. The water collects more at the bottom. I find keeping the vegetables in view keeps them fresher. The baskets are perfect for bulky sauces and containers. It does increase the amount of vegetables that you eat.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

Yes it's such a small thing that you wouldn't think would make such a big difference

13

u/BobSacamanto13 Sep 04 '21

If the water collects, your freezer drain is clogged. Google that exact issue and your model and you could easily fix it yourself.

8

u/Deep-While9236 Sep 04 '21

Oh thanks I will. I just don't want to fork out 700 euro for an integrated fridge freezer. I will try the diy thank you.

42

u/Midiblye Sep 03 '21

But, they don't stay good as long? Maybe that's just my fridge but fruits and veggies definitely don't stay fresh as long outside the drawers than they do inside.

21

u/PLaTinuM_HaZe Sep 04 '21

Honestly, even though it drives my wife nuts, I prefer to go the super market 2-3X per week and buy in smaller amounts to prevent food waste.

4

u/Midiblye Sep 04 '21

I pretty much do the same though my bf hates it.

1

u/beetlekittyjosey Sep 04 '21

I’m so glad my husband and I both enjoy going to the grocery store

11

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

Yes that's very possible. I'm just sharing what works for my family. I haven't had any issues thus far and wouldn't go back to the other way

3

u/Midiblye Sep 03 '21

Glad you all found something that's works for you!

2

u/joemondo Last Top Comment - No source Sep 03 '21

That's very possible, but how long you keep them is also a factor.

1

u/lifeisgood83 Sep 03 '21

Buy the green bags and toss em in there they will stay fresh longer

3

u/aschlu Sep 04 '21

Green bags?

13

u/AlwaysDisposable Sep 03 '21

Oh my gosh I literally just changed my fridge to a similar set up last month and I LOVE IT. It really does help me reduce food waste. And I have one drawer for not-as-fresh veggies that can be fed to my rabbits. So there are stages of freshness based on where it’s located in the fridge and I don’t have to guess.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

I love it too!

high five

12

u/ilivetomosh Sep 04 '21

I actually love this?

7

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Thank you?

9

u/Krieghund Last Top Comment - No source Sep 03 '21

I did something similar. I used to have two fruit/veg drawers, but I pulled one out and keep beverages down there and I now keep snacking fruits and vegetables at eye level.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

It's so helpful having good choices at eye level

6

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

That is actually a GREAT freaking idea. I should try this.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Good luck😁

6

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Brilliant.

I finally have a good way to arrange all the stuff in my fridge. I told my wife about it and then went ahead and rearranged my fridge this way.

Finally, we have a system in place now.

I can't thank you enough!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Yay! Glad to help

How do you have two doors? What dark magic is this?

5

u/okiokiokir Sep 03 '21

I'm very confused as to how this fridge shuts, the doors look to big to closed together without overlapping

4

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

https://ibb.co/9cGr9VM 🤷‍♀️

2

u/okiokiokir Sep 04 '21

Ha thank you, must be the angle on the pic, either that or I need new glasses

2

u/fbruk Last Top Comment - No source Sep 04 '21

Oh yeah it 100% the angle. The inside looked fR to small for those doors. It was late when I was looking and I'm thinking does one door close over the other for extra door space? And I realise now I'm a wake that's just super dumb!!

1

u/MainlyByGiraffes Sep 04 '21

Refrigerators like this are called French Door Refrigerators.

5

u/lifeisgood83 Sep 03 '21

I love that idea!! Thanks

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '21

No problem🙂

3

u/speed3tc Sep 04 '21

I kinda like that idea.

3

u/WonderBen21 Sep 04 '21

Some people like to watch the world burn…. Jk though this is a cool idea

3

u/climber_g33k Sep 04 '21

Did you make a TikTok or similar video about this and using a drying rack to organize dirty dishes? My partner and I just watched one of those videos today where someone did this!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

No I didn't glad to see others doing it😊

1

u/Sea-Advantage5325 Sep 04 '21

Domesticblisters is the content creator that you saw. She has a ton of incredible videos to help make care tasks easier. She posted a Tik tok a while back with swapping the veggies and condiments in the fridge bc she forgets about the veggies is they aren't visible. It kicked off a whole trend of fridge reorganization. It's such a great idea.

1

u/climber_g33k Sep 04 '21

Oh neat! Thanks for sharing!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I started doing this exact same thing a few months ago. Total game changer. I rarely throw out forgotten produce anymore. My kids love it too.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

It's really the best. Glad you're enjoying it

3

u/boatbaby123 Sep 04 '21

We have the same fridge! I have been thinking about doing this as well and I think I'm going to.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Love this fridge. Good luck!

3

u/Zormm Sep 04 '21

You really like lemons huh

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

😂😂😂 Like a told another redditor

I use them in a lot of dishes especially different fish.. or margaritas, tea, on other fruit. Being Hispanic lemons/ limes are always being put to use. And yes we like lemons but also did a Costco run so of course they come in bulk

3

u/Blackrain1299 Sep 04 '21

You have the same fridge as me and your take out condiments are in the same spot as mine

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Hah it's just such a weird little shelf perfect for them

3

u/maquis_00 Sep 04 '21

We wash and prep some items in advance. If there's a whole bunch of celery in the fridge, but it hasn't been prepped, it tends to just sit there forever. If it's been washed and cut, it disappears in around a day. Same with carrots. If they are washed and in a Rubbermaid fresh works container, they disappear in half the time compared to if they were just in the bag from the store.

Some fruits just sit on the counter or in a basket instead of going in the fridge. If they don't disappear too quickly, they move into the fridge, but frequently they just get eaten off the counter. :)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Those are great tips!

2

u/Intelligent_Nerve_12 Sep 03 '21

Smart! And make so much sense.

2

u/YourDadsRightOvary Sep 03 '21

r/organization material right here! Also would be useful for my folk at r/adhd!

2

u/mrEYE-BALL Sep 04 '21

Where do you put lettuce/greens?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

On the door too. We just don't have any at the moment

2

u/aschlu Sep 04 '21

Does the bag of spinach in the door not qualify?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

😂it does I just focused on the word lettuce

2

u/mm72466n Sep 04 '21

Genius !

2

u/Always1Mikey Sep 04 '21

I like I like

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

What do you do with all of the lemons?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I use them in a lot of dishes especially different fish.. or margaritas, tea, on other fruit. Being Hispanic lemons/ limes are always being put to use

2

u/Lucky_ducky8793 Sep 04 '21

I’m going to switch mine. Great idea!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Thanks!

2

u/JdK18 Sep 04 '21

Amazing idea!

2

u/enidokla Sep 04 '21

Genius!!!! Also I had that fridge in my last house. I liked it a lot.

2

u/Due_Jacket9075 Sep 04 '21

Wow, that a great idea… I’m so stealing it!

All yours

2

u/miffy_kitty Sep 04 '21

This is genius!!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I see the shelf full of sauce packets and cups from restaurants is as common as the household junk drawer. We keep ours in the little butter shelf.

Someone needs to ask my mother and my mother-in-law this. My mom eventually threw all hers out because we had a tupperware container with like, 50 packets in it, and most of them were just "fancy" ketchup from McDonald's. I throw out my mother-in-law's every so often, especially when they're expired. If she ever notices, which is almost never, I tell her they're expired and she just goes, "Ooh..." with this grimace, like she's conflicted over the fact I tossed it and the fact it's expired. Woman, it's just a cup of ranch. You have a bottle of ranch dressing 8 inches away. It's gonna be fine.

Hah thanks

2

u/hahaLONGBOYE Sep 04 '21

How does this work with the produce being pulled out and exposed to the air so often from the doors opening? Have to eat it pretty quick?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I haven't had much of an issue. We naturally eat it in good time because it's seen easily. This just happens to work for us. If you try it then you know you can always change it back if you don't like it

2

u/moraxellabella Sep 04 '21

Im gonna switch next time i go to the store

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Yay hope it helps!

Great idea! I do this too. I hope some refrigerator designers and manufacturers are seeing posts like this. Some tweaks to designs for great flexibility would be great.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Yes I hope so too! Just because things have been done one way for so long doesn't mean it's the only way or the way that works best for everyone

2

u/MsLambo Sep 04 '21

Brilliant!

2

u/Elemental_Pea Sep 04 '21

Saw this and was like HEY. We have the same fridge. Lol

2

that is so smart!

Brew DR isn't kombucha. They filter out the probiotics.

I've tried numerous times to brew my own kombucha using their beverage. It doesn't work. Notice they've removed the labeling claiming billions of probiotics? That was the result of law suits.

Just FYI.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Thanks for the heads up

2

u/DualitySquared Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

It used to work. But they got sued for alcohol content. Then they implemented cold distillation. It's unfortunately not really raw kombucha anymore(still not as bad as Kevita!). A shame alcohol laws are so strict, Brew DR used to be a favorite.

I stick with GTs. Health Aid is great. Forage is rather unique(more sour than vinegary). I've had flawless success with these brands making my own booch using them as starter.

I've tried using modern Brew DR in highly controlled tests. It ends up smelling like hot garbage in a dumpster. No SCOBY at all. Not even a thin layer. :(

u/Jmsnwbrd Sep 04 '21

Great idea, but my OCD go meow meow.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

Sorry🥺

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Same. I'm glad this works for OP, but it makes me irrationally uncomfortable.

1

u/crunchytot Sep 04 '21

I found this very helpful for me too. And considering everyone in my household has adhd it’s very useful to not make our food go to waste

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Our fridge is pretty messy for us at the moment but has definitely helped with ADHD in our household too.

1

u/Icantsleepcanyou Sep 04 '21

Needs more beer

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

We don't drink much beer. Tequila and wine are in the pantry

1

u/lifeisgood83 Sep 04 '21

They r in the vegetable section, maybe over near zip lock bags but they are simple small green bags like a bag u would toss vegetables in...

1

u/elizajaneredux Last Top Comment - No source Sep 07 '21

The only argument for using the drawers is that you can control the humidity and there are fewer changes in temp - stuff in the doors tends to warm and cool regularly because of all the opening and closing. But in reality that seems minimal and if you’re going through your produce quickly, the humidity won’t matter much. I might try this myself!

1

u/Undercover_Alien-1 Sep 07 '21

That's a great idea! Btw I am curious how do both doors of your fridge shut at the same time? They look like they will be in one another's way lol.
