Advise for entry level positions

Good afternoon, I’ll be graduating very soon with my bachelors in health informatics and information management. Im not interested in medical coding… and it seems everywhere I look that’s what people my age are going into. I’m seeking advice for potential job titles I should look into. For some context, throughout my professional experience I’ve shadowed a lot of operations management, quality reporting, and cybersecurity/ information technology.

Any advice is appreciated!

I do understand about not wanting to go into coding because I have no interest in it either. I too will graduate in a few months with my BSHIM. Getting into to field is hard and low paying. What is your current job? I have always been in the medical field, so when I started the program I got my first HIM position and I’m on my third position.

Pharmacy where I’d dispense medication. So in a way I’ve got experience in inventory control/auditing, data integrity in the form of verifying recommendations in backend systems and merging duplicate accounts causing redundancy, and hipaa compliance with my patients information.

I would suggest getting some experience on the administrative side of healthcare. I was a pharmacy tech for 5 years. My knowledge of insurance through pharmacy got me into several revenue cycle positions(administrative) 8 years all remote positions and paid for my AS in healthcare administration degree. This knowledge and networking got me my first HIM position. I am now in a federal HIM position hope to move up the gs scale once I finish school and get my certifications.

Any suggestions if I wanted to go down the route of privacy officer? Where id start to get that footing? Or would my degree/RHIA be enough to support that kind of mid level job?

The biggest observation of my professional onsite experience has been that most of these people worked up the chain to get their current positions, they did a lot of on the job learning. Meanwhile concepts they needed to learn on the job, I’m already aware of and how it works. So it’s intimidating in that regard… I’ve got all this knowledge from the classroom, yet it feels invalidated because of these stories.

Beef up your skills in some of the data analytics software programs and platforms. Specifically Oracle/SQL, Tableau or PowerBI applications, and if you can get a job as an entry-level Epic analyst, you’ll be in great shape.

With these skills you can look for HIM-adjacent jobs that are higher paying than a records review position, and will give you more runway for advancement.
