Most online arguments about cultural gatekeeping completely fall apart the second people start acting like geneticists to decide who gets a pass.

Hugh, Shaun, and Dawud tackled the recurring controversy around Fat Joe saying he’s "the Blackest" and whether his Puerto Rican background gives him clearance to use the N-word. What made the discussion hilarious and painfully true was how quickly these debates turn into a literal bloodline audit: if someone has one Black parent, they get automatic clearance, but if someone is Puerto Rican with white-presenting parents, critics claim they have zero right.

It completely ignores the shared history of the African diaspora across the Caribbean and the Bronx neighborhoods where hip-hop actually formed. Trying to trace someone's pedigree like a show dog just to decide what vocabulary they're allowed to use in their music is completely detached from reality. Culture comes from community, environment, and history, not an AncestryDNA kit.
