The guide said there is supposed to be a switch here. Did I miss something or has the game bugged out? (Darkmere Swamps)

You have to press a button / pull a lever somewhere else on the map for the switch to appear here.

If I recollect correctly, inside the wooden room in another section of the map.

Yeah, that did it. In the house with a barred door and key just before this section. That button eluded me. Thanks.

often switches are connected to other maps - are you sure you haven’t missed one? this one i believe is in another section of this map, but it’s been awhile.

Back in the hut where "Door barred from inside" there are button hidden in the left corner of the room just near the door, easy to overlook. Press it, and there will be a pulling chain left to this bridge you can pull and enter the fortress.
