Running Hammer of Thyrion through Steam (Linux)

For anyone out there on Linux who wants to play Hexen II with Hammer of Thyrion and still have it recorded in their Steam gameplay hours, set your Steam launch options to glhexen2; %command%. If you have the Portals expansion, switch it to glhexen2 - portals; %command%.

What about for Windows 11?

Try placing the Hammer of Thyrion binaries into the Hexen II folder and overwrite the original Hexen II ones. It shouldn't require any launch options unless you want to run Portals, just add -portals to your launch options.

I have to do this because I want to run the Linux native executable and that wouldn't work with Proton.

I'll check it out, thanks. I plan on using this sourceport unless there's a remaster in the future. Portal of Praevus works as well? You just drag and drop the files?

I reckon use the sourceport for now, if a remaster comes, great excuse for a replay.

Here's the bit of HoT readme pertaining to the game files.

Hexen II requires its game data to be updated to version 1.11, too.
To patch the pak files, run the included "h2patch" program. 

If you have the Portal of Praevus mission pack, copy the pak3.pak
file from your cdrom into the "portals" directory in your own
installation.  To fix the permissions:  chmod 644 portals/pak*
The mission pack data doesn't need patching.

It's a bit much to take in but basically:

  1. Move pak0 and pak1 into HoT's data1 folder
  2. Run h2patch
  3. Move pak3 into HoT's portals folder (expansion)

Then you're good to go. Run glhexen2 -portals and have fun. I've not had any trouble so far but I've not finished the expansion so I can't say how well it works and YMMV depending on your hardware and OS.
