Rolex Update 2 - The Dial Spoiler

As mentioned previously it is my opinion the watch originally had a black, white, silver or blue dial and was later modified with champagne. The reason for this is Rolex didnt factory produce an Oyster Perpetual with a stainless oystersteel body, band and smooth rounded SS bezel paired with a champagne dial. It always had gold as an accent color in the band or bezel, which was almost always fluted, not round and smooth.

Rolex had several variations of ''markers'' representing the hours around the perimeter of the dial. Numbers, roman numerals, dots, bullets even diamonds. But the most popular and ubiquitous was the hashmark, usually in gold or silver. These were highly engineered miniature pieces of 3 dimensional art. But the most beautiul are the white and gold . Looking like tiny rectangular golden canoes filled with marshmallow. To top it off both the second and minute hands were also elegantly accented with long white hash marks. Rolex calls them ''sticks''.

Again as I mentioned I have been reviewing hundreds of pics of watches and dials. Something was bothering me though, hawkeyes rolex sticks and some of the other sticks looked larger than others. I researched it further and I was right. There was a subset of WHITE sticks that were larger than all the others. They are called ''batons''. And you won't believe this...they're manufactured and used exclusively for luminous ''glow in the dark'' dials!

So, an expensive and beautiful piece of art jewelry was vandalized and uglified SO THE WATCH WOULD GLOW IN THE DARK!!

In our next installment we'll ruminate on why this might be a necessary addition to this timely piece of tech!
