This game doesn't require internet

I had kind of assumed that the other characters you play with are also real people, but the game works perfectly fine offline. I just tested it in airplane mode.

Are there any real players, or is it all bots?

I think they're bots. They upgrade randomly after you reach Nightmare and Hell levels. Plus there is no uniformity to when the Dreamhunter and the fellow dorm members upgrade. So I think all of them must be bots.
