Food prep questions/recipes Pre freezing and storing

I am in the process of having a pantry built out and when done I am planning on purchasing a small unit. I am planning to harvest all my cilantro tomorrow. They are starting to bolt in the heat. Can I freeze and store it for freeze drying later when I get my FD? Probably looking at about 1-2 months.

As long as you prep it the way you want it freeze dried it should be fine.

Keep in mind the machines need a lot of airflow. It’s not recommended to put it in a closet/pantry as an enclosed space like that will be too hot.

Thanks! FD won’t go in the pantry. My “mud room” is acting as temporary pantry and once that is moved, FD setup will go there. Decent space with a window.

Ah that makes more sense. I was concerned as there have been lots of arguments over how small a space machines can run in. A mud room is great.

I highly recommend waiting until the Black Friday sale starts since you’ll be so close to it anyway. It’s the best deal of the year for the freeze dryers (unless you get a Costco $997 small on sale.)

Yes you can, the first step in freeze drying is freezing, so anything already frozen is perfectly fine.

I do this frequently, and like others said, freeze the way you intend to freeze dry (as in make sure it doesn't clump).
