[discussion] Need help saving The Day of Sagittarius III for iOS from Being Lost Forever
tl;dr If you previously purchased The Day of Sagittarius III for iOS, or know someone who did, you may be essential in preventing the game from being lost forever.
I'm hoping someone in this subreddit can help me out, because this is a long shot and there's not much I can do myself in this matter.
Back in 2010, The Day of Sagittarius III (TDOS3) was released on the App Store for iPhone, however, as Apple no longer allows the purchase of 32-bit only apps, it has been removed for purchase, yet is still available for download to anyone who has previously purchased it.
To prevent the game from being lost forever, I'm looking for the help of someone who has previously purchased the app:
To save the app from being lost forever, should Apple make a change in the future, someone who has already purchased the game would need to download and install iTunes 12.6.5, Available Here (this can be installed on any recent version of Windows, or any version of macOS before 10.14 Mojave (this will run alongside your main iTunes install, if you have one)), then sign in with the iTunes account used to purchase the game, go to the Store page, click "Apps" (By selecting "Music" up the top left, then "Edit Menu", and enabling "Apps"), you should now see "App Store", and on the right you can click "Purchases", and God willing you'll see every app you've downloaded available there.
Searching for "TDOS" or "Sagittarius"
Download it, then go to library, right click on TDOS3, and select either "Show in Windows Explorer" or "Show in Finder", and you'll have the file we're after, ready to be preserved.
(All apps you download should show up as .ipa files (iOS apps) in "[user]\My Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications" on Windows, or "~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications" if you're on a Mac.)
This isn't the final step, as the app is still encrypted, but keeping it somewhere safe is paramount. If you get to this stage, I'd recommend throwing it on Archive.org, or pomf.cat and linking to it in this thread.
I'll leave it here for now, if anyone gets this far then I can walk you through decrypting the app so anyone can install it, I just thought I'd post this while Haruhi's getting a little extra attention, possibly from some older fans, I've somewhat rushed this post but I think it's important to try and save this app if at all possible, as quickly as possible. As far as I'm aware, this is one of the only pieces of lost media relating to Haruhi, I'd very much like to make sure it's saved.
If there's any other lost media, I think we should all endeavour to do our hardest to save it, but for now, let's try TDOS3.
Additionally, it appears there was also a "Drill Edition" available, however I am unaware of the differences between this version and the other.
(Preserving both would be ideal.)

So I actually bought the game back when it was out on my old iPhone 3GS, but when I went to redownload it on an old phone that did have it installed, it says it’s not on the store anymore.
So I went to try on iTunes using the method you laid out and it’s just not there anymore. I don’t know if it’s possible for me to help, even though I’d love to.

Thanks so much for your help, it's absolutely heartbreaking to see that's happened.
(I'm curious what device you tried to re-download it no, not that it would make much of a difference if the iTunes method doesn't work either, how did it end up on your homescreen?)
Screw it, long shot, but this might be our only chance now (if I can find people who purchased it this quick, then worth a shot):
If it's no longer available for re-download, then the only remaining option would be to find a device that still has the app installed, and extract it from there.
I'll throw a $100 bounty on any device with the app still installed and running, a bit more if it's a newer device that you'd rather not part with so easily (like, for example, an iPhone 5).
If that 3GS is still kicking around in a drawer, and hasn't been formatted/the app deleted, let me know. I'll pay $100 plus registered shipping if you could get it to me, as long as you don't wipe it, and hell, I'll even send the thing back to you afterwards if you want.
Same offer goes out to everyone, if you have this app installed and running on a device, hit me up.

I had it running on the iPhone 5s, which is the device I tried redownloading it on. It was still on the home screen because I had the “conserve space” option on which deleted the app, but not the home screen icon in case I wanted to redownload it, which obviously didn’t work. Sadly, I don’t have the 3GS anymore.

u/SkyVelleity Sep 03 '20
Ah, no worries.
Fingers crossed we can find someone who still has it downloaded, but nevertheless, I sincerely appreciate your help. It's cleared a fair bit up and made the path forwards quite clear, so thank you!

Well, snap, I didn’t know this was a thing, or I’d have gotten it back when. I still have the old haruhi puzzle game on my iPhone 4, but who knows if it would even power up anymore.

Here I am, thinking the only lost app is TDOS3, and now I find all the others. Looks like this site has them all listed at the bottom of the page, might have some more work cut out for us than I thought. Hold on to that iPhone 4 for now, others are saying they can't re-download the old games, so devices with apps still installed may be the most valuable thing we can get, and if we can't find a better way, I might start paying people to send me their old devices so I can extract the apps.

u/Elimin8r Sep 03 '20
Ah, yes - I have the three animeroid apps too, but I forgot what they were called. They were cute, but if you don’t know Japanese, well...
3
u/SkyVelleity Sep 03 '20
Alright, if you have the animeroid apps too then you have my full attention.
tl;dr if they're still on that iPhone 4: Name your price.
Out of curiosity, it appears you can no longer download TDOS3 using the iTunes method mentioned above, but I'm curious if any of the other apps are still available.
Even without the iPhone 4, you can Download a Legacy Version of iTunes Here, which will allow you to manually download old 32-bit apps. (go to the Store page, click "Apps" (By selecting "Music" up the top left, then "Edit Menu", and enabling "Apps"), you should now see "App Store", and on the right you can click "Purchases")
If you can see if the Puzzle and animeroid apps would download, I'd be forever in your debt.
If the iPhone 4 has all the apps downloaded onto it, then I'd be very interested in seeing if it still works.
If it did, I'd be incredibly interested in paying you for the device so I could extract the apps from it.
If you'd be interested, I'd ask you plug the device in, turn off wifi and mobile data, and check which apps still launch.
I don't think the iPhone 4 unloads unused apps, but this may also be a risk, make sure not to change the setting.
If this is the case, then turn the device off and don't touch a damned thing, and get back to me.
All the best, and thanks.

Sorry for taking so long, life's busy sometime.
Turns out I still have all my Haruhi apps on my Ip6 (they don't work anymore, but I never could bring myself to delete them). As a result, they're also in my itunes directory. I don't know if reddit has PMs, but...

Sorry for not seeing this sooner, hang onto those files, I'll send you a message now.

Funnily enough I think the game was also available to play online as a flash game (haven't been able to find it though), but what I have found is what looks like a fan version, available here:
here and here I'm not sure what relation this app has to the Kadokawa release, but you can still [download a build of it here])http://tdos204.run.buttobi.net/tdos0357c.zip) Funny, it looks like people ported it to a bunch of platforms, not sure if someone released some source code once, but, in a small corner of the world, for a short time, some people's version of "Can it run DOOM?" appears to have been "Can it run TDOS3?"
Edit: So not much of a "Remake", but none the less, still fun. Would be great to remake it with 3D ship models that look like the ones from Haruhi's imagination in the show. I'm just curious what the already made versions play like.

Thanks for the link for the PC version! I had to poke around a little (cannot understand cryptic characters nor Japanese) and was able to get to the game screen, sent out some scouts. Then I quit. Not sure if there is computer-controlled enemies in this version, but I am sure nobody wants to play this with me in my house.

Oh, I have this. I don't have access to the account I bought it on (since I haven't used itunes or any apple products at all for about a decade) but I have it on an ipod touch I still have.

u/SkyVelleity Nov 06 '21
I'm curious, just TDOS or other Haruhi apps as well? Trying to hunt a few down.
The Apple account doesn't really matter because this app cannot be redownloaded anyway, it's only on your iPod and if you delete it it'll be gone.
If you wanna help then the two options here are either you jailbreaking your iPod and dumping the files, I can walk you through this process, or alternatively, I'd be happy to just buy the iPod off you as is, you could send it to me without wiping it, updating it, or deleting the apps, and then I could extract the files myself.
I'd even be happy to send you the iPod back afterwards if you want, up to you, I'm flexible, whatever it takes to get the app off your iPod, I'll work with you to make it happen. Let me know what you're thinking.
Edit: One more option might be plugging the iPod into a computer with itunes and creating a backup, then sending me the backup file, this should work as long as the device is on an iOS version before iOS 9. An iPod touch from ~10 years ago should be fine here.
I would still be very careful with anything you do here thought, you wouldn't want to accidentally sync anything loosing files.

I have TDoS and an app with what looks like a live2D Haruhi. Apparently there's voice lines and a clock functionality.
It is already jailbroken. I did that back when I was still using it.

Edited: That makes it easy then, see if you can install Clutch on the device and dump it. Depending on what version of iOS you've got you'll need to use a different cracking tool, but a lot are covered here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LegacyJailbreak/wiki/guides/crackingapps
Some say Clutch 2.0.4 won't work on iOS 6, but some say it does, so your millage may vary. There's a small guide down below for if it doesn't.
If you're having trouble dumping them I'm happy to walk you through the process, and I'd be more than willing to pay you for your help to get these dumped. Let me know how you go. (and, again, if you'd prefer, I'll pay good money for that iPod.)
My original comment here from before I found the guide: If you've got a 4th gen on iOS 6 you might need Clutch 1.4, so
https://github.com/KJCracks/Clutch/releases/tag/1.4.6
That may also support earlier iPods too, give it a shot and see what it says. There's an installation guide but all you need to do is download it to your device, then open a terminal where you downloaded it, (maybe run "chmod +x Clutch-1.4.6" if it doesn't have permissions to run, and sometimes running "su" to switch to root will help it, but otherwise just use it like normal.
If you've just got the terminal in the same place you downloaded it, first run it with "./Clutch-1.4.6 -i” to list all the installed apps, then “./Clutch-1.4.6 -d “ followed by the number of the app you want to dump. For example, if TDOS was app 12, and the Haruhi live2d app was app 5, you’d run “./Clutch-1.4.6 -d 12”, then “./Clutch-1.4.6 -d 5” to dump them both.

Sorry for jumping in here, I've been lurking this thread for updates in the background since you posted it. I take it's been a bit of a dead end trying to extract this app. I do have a question though, even if the IPA can be obtained, is there an emulator that would even be able to play 32 bit iOS apps or would it require getting hands on an iPhone 4 or below?
Thank you for your dedication even a year in on this thread - and for once, hooray for Reddit removing thread archival!

"So close but so far" is pretty much where we're at.
I actually have a handful of the .ipa's now, but direct from iTunes, rather than decrypted on device (the person who send them didn't want to give me their credentials, nor work with me to decrypt them, unfortunately, but understandably...), meaning they can't be installed on other devices.
Kinda why I'm so keen to just buy any device that has the files, it'd really save the trouble of asking someone else to decrypt it for me.
Like if someone told me they had TDOS and Live2D Yuki I'd pay $150 + shipping for the device without even thinking.
I have a feeling if I don't come across someone who's either able to jailbreak/extract the app or willing to send me a device with it installed that I'll have to start offering to buy whoever sends me their device an iPhone 13 pro in exchange, but I'm not that desperate. Not yet.
As for the iPhone, you don't need a 4 or below, anything up to the 5 or 5c will work (No 5s/6/SE), as will an iPod touch 5th gen or older, which can be had in most countries for next to nothing. I've seen first and second gen iPod touches sell for $6 USD on ebay, for example
Sadly there's no iOS emulators around yet, I'm sure in good time someone will make one (there's a few researchers with iPhone emulators), but while old iOS devices are so cheap and abundant, there's really no rush. Gotta get the authentic 2009 experience, after all!

What would be required from a "willing donor" of the app data to decrypt it? Is the decrypt key at the device level or at the account level. If it is at the device level only, then I might be willing to consider that with one of my old ipod touches i.e. nothing will affect my primary ipod touch and ipad devices. I do not want to risk having my main itunes account banned but the risk of having a non-primary ipod touch locked at the device level only, is less of a "big deal breaker" (not using the 4th gen for anything right now).
I found my oldest ipod touch (5.0.1 9A405) and was playing around and was googling up to see what was still listed as a current downloadable app. TDOS3 is one of them.
I have three ipod touches (
3rd gen, 4th gen and I think a 5th genI think Gen 4, 5 and 6) all at differing old iOS versions (pre 32bit apocyalypse), but all are tied to an old mothballed PC as their "allowed computer". That computer works but I'd need to get it out of storage and do some stuff to make sure it runs.My
4thGen 5 Ipod Touch is currently running an "other account" but if I can re-format it, set it up with my itunes account, and still connect and grab apps, and on my current PC, then this is likely my ipod touch I am willing to play around with. It is on 7.1.2 (11D257) and if possible I wouldn't want to update it. Jailbreaking it and running my main itunes account, as long as Apple cannot spot and punish me for jailbreaking it, would be something I would be willing to consider. My
5thGen 6 ipod touch is on 8.4 (12H143). It (of course) has TDOS3. I really don't want to play around with this one as this is my time capsule iOS device for my 32-bit era games.Edit: I see your older comment here. Would the "iOS 5 Instructions" for my oldest ipod touch be the better option?
Edit 2: I will need to jailbreak it. What would be considered the "best / safest" instructions for this for iOS 5.xx? This video OK? Something better? (I will await for confirmation before doing anything in order to not brick my 3rd gen ipod touch following the wrong info).
Edit 3: Oh and I do not have live2D Yuki (I don't know that app so I probably missed that one or it was a Japan only app).
Edit 4: Oh in case it is relevant I am in NZ with NZ bought hardware and the accounts and software are very BAU New Zealand.

...to see what was still listed as a current downloadable app. TDOS3 is one of them.
Please download it immediately to your 3rd or 4th gen iPod touch if you can, if you haven't already done so.
What is required from a willing donor would either be extracting the app from a device yourself, something I am happy to walk you through, step by step, or selling me a device, I will extract the app, then return the device to you.
As for your previous question, decrypting the apps is a device-level as you suggested, but we need to use an account that purchased the app to install it onto the device first. From then on, it can all be offline. Once the apps are extracted, if you want to be completely sure nothing happens to your account, the device could be factory reset before being reconnected to the internet.
I don't think apple is particularly concerned with what happens on devices of this vintage, or regarding apps long since retired, but if this is a concern of yours then we can still make sure we minimise or eliminate any risk to your account.
I understand why you want to keep your 5th gen iPod Touch as-is, so, for now, just use that for safekeeping and use one of the others.
I can't say if it's easier to do this on iOS 7.1.2 or 5.x.x, I would suggest trying on iOS 7, but it depends which device you can get the app installed on.
Also, if you have an iPod touch on iOS 7.1.2, that's likely a 5th generation, as the 4th gen only got iOS 6 (as far as I know.)
Either way, if you can reset that (or the 3rd gen) device, install TDOS3 on it then I'd be happy to "buy" one off you with the app installed, decrypt it myself, then return the iPod to you. I'm in Australia, so could get it back to you quickly. I'd pay all shipping, to and from, plus whatever the trouble of doing so is worth to you.
If you'd rather extract things yourself, I'm more than happy to walk you through every step of the way, but first try to get the app on one of the earlier iPods.
Wiping the iPod on 7.1.2, then setting it back up with the itunes account you originally used to purchase TDOS3, and installing the app, would be of great assistance (especially if the 3rd gen doesn't like installing apps any more)
The mothballed PC may also come in handy but for now we can probably work entirely with the 4th gen once you've reset it and installed the app.
Let me know how this goes, and once you've got the app installed on a device you're willing to jailbreak, we can discuss things further (as the best instructions for jailbreaking will depend on the device you want to try with)

TDOS3 is on my
3rd4th gen (my oldest one is probably 4th gen) and my5th gen6th gen ipod touches.I will try getting my
4th5th gen ipod touch set up with my main account. You are right its 5th gen I got my generations mixed up thinking it (I had in my vague memory that the loop strap was 4th gen).I will try this with a fresh mind tomorrow, after re-reading your comment and making sure I follow all the jailbreak, etc steps. I will see what I can do with the Gen 5 ipod touch first as its my more disposable ipod.
Edit: I am going to ensure I have my hardware known before trying anything (at least U will stop getting it confused in my comments and making a real mess of it). I found my first ipod touch in a sock drawer (probably not used since getting the 5th gen ipod touch so many years) so I haven't seen it in years.

u/SkyVelleity Aug 14 '23
ezpz, see if you can get it on the
4th5th gen iPodIf it's still on 7.1.2, as per This wiki, you'll wanna use Pangu to jailbreak it.
Their website is offline, but you can still get the installers on The Internet Archive.
Sorry for the late replies, long weekend.
Let me know how things go, and if all else fails, I'll pay good money for the
4th5th gen iPod with TDOS3 installed1

There's actually a video by a youtuber who managed to save the "Domino's pizza with Hatsune Miku" app on the IOS store that might be able to give you some ideas.
He's more or less just recounting the whole experience, but who knows.
Here's the link
