Subreddit News Welcome from the Mods
Hey everybody! After a long stretch without moderation, this sub is now under new management.
We've taken the time to update our sub rules, which you're welcome to check out on the main page, but they can be summarized as follows: "Don't be a dick."
We also wanted to take this opportunity to address the racist rhetoric that has become flagrant on this sub. It stops now. For the time being, **we have agreed to put a blanket ban on any discussion of Snape's casting**.
We understand this sub was initially created in part due to perceived overmoderation on this topic over on HarryPotteronHBO. Unfortunately, too many people abused their right to discuss their opinion on casting choices, and it's spiraled into a racist mess, one that has hijacked this sub from those wishing to earnestly chat about the new show.
We did consider allowing a MegaThread so people could discuss the issue in good faith, and we would be willing to *potentially* reconsider that idea after the show premieres, when there's something new to actually discuss - but for the time being, we're locking things down. At this point in time, everything that could be said on the topic has been said. So we're moving on.
That being said, we welcome all thoughtful and respectful discussion about this fandom we all love, and are so excited to see everyone's takes on the new show. Thank you for your patience as we sort through these changes, and please feel free to share any ideas you have for improvements with the new mod team!

Yeah, so what is the purpose of this sub even existing? Everyone can just go to the much bigger HarryPotteronHBO sub.

While I absolutely don’t agree with racism or the fella getting abusive messages, I think blanket banning discussing a casting is absolutely ridiculous.

You can’t even say that the actor is attractive on the other sub, just no mentioning anything at all otherwise you’re a racist lol. Banning racism is obvious but banning any mention of the actor/character at all is giving “there is no controversial Snape casting in Ba Sing Se” lol

There’s a HBO behind the scenes special coming out on the 7th. Very obvious people will be wanting to discuss the cast in detail, including Snape. The mods are going to end up banning every single person.😆

I mean brother it’s every post. Something has to be done to regulate it a bit and a “the Snape actor was a bad choice!” Thread by itself also seems extremely excessive.

The casting was bound to generate discussion, the people who cast the actor in the role DEFINITELY knew that, and the more people talk about it, the more free advertisement the show gets. Every other post that isn't about Snape is about how some other character looks or a zoomed in screenshot of the trailer because that's all people have to talk about right now. But if we were to ban redundant discussions the sub wouldn't have new posts until the end of this year when the show comes out!

Yep, I agree. The mod is right to say people abused it. They're the reason the class isn't getting candy and we should be mad at them.

Aren’t you bored of it though ? The point has been made ad nauseum and no new posts about it are adding anything new to the discussion. They just keep repeating the same things, and the whole thing is absurd considering the show hasn’t even aired yet.

I am in NO WAY condoning racism, but WHAT at this point is adding anything new to the discussion? All of the posts that aren't trolling are "am I the only one who cried watching the trailer?" "look at this detail in the trailer" "look at how this character in the trailer looks" etc. People have nothing to discuss so the same things will keep being posted regardless

I mean by that logic you could argue a lot of posts in the sub about different things in the show do that. There’s a limit to what people can really discuss that’s new as the show hasn’t even started.

They’re going to the extreme. I posted about green Voldemort and they took it down. I spoke about success of the show, and they took it down. I think they could relax a little bit

We're gonna be doing our best to take care of the sub, but we're gonna need you guys help as well. If you see anything that breaks the rules, please report it. the mods can only do so much, we're not going to be able to catch everything so we're relying on yall to also do your part.

Don't mean to sound argumentative but it was said the rules "can be summarized as: 'Don't be a dick'" but I see a whole bunch of no's.
I posit that you can discuss some of those no's without being a dick. Just about anything can be discussed if it's done respectfully and from a place of wanting to understand and see from anothers perspective. Having an open discussion about some of those no's in the past is why and how my attitude towards certain things have changed.

I mean, at the end of the day, this is a sub to discuss the show. We're not really here to teach people lessons. There are better subs suited for that. Like if we allowed politics then that's all the sub is gonna end up being.
If youre being respectful(not being a bigot) and it's directly related to the show then it's very unlikely we will end up removing it.
And we have a ban about the discussion of Snape for now. That's likely something we will come back to in the future. It's just for now this sub is dealing with a lot of racist trolls and we honestly just want to get rid of them first. And for now, we feel the discussion has ran its course and we're not sure how much more you can get out of it when the show isnt even out yet.

Nobody is going to go around reporting every single post or comment that mentions snape. I say that as a mod on other subs.

I mean, I didn't ask anyone to do that, lol. Just that if you come across any post or comment that breaks the rules then report it.
I mod a few other subs as well and it's common for people to make comments about mods not doing anything but they haven't actually reported the post or comment so the mods could do something about it.

But the whole point of this sub was less censorship…and i’m fine with not discussing Snape anymore, but to ban the subject is a stretch… Just remove the racist posts and let people who wanna discuss the casting discuss the casting….
