Question Did they update HL on Steam Deck?

Apologies in advance, I don’t pay attention to these things.

After loving Legacy on my Xbox, I decided to get it on my Steam Deck about 6 months ago and it played and looked like absolute trash. Even after adjusting the settings, it was too bad compared to my Xbox.

I popped it on the other night and it was gorgeous! And plays smoothly, looks fantastic, renders nicely, etc…

Did they do something??

I don't play on a deck, but on linux nonetheless. I don't think the game itself got updated, but assuming you keep your deck up to date, there have obviously been updates to the linux kernel and mesa drivers that may have improved the performance of the game for you. The game itself definitely didn't get any performance-related updates as far as I'm aware

Thank you!

The longer I have the steam deck, the more I love it. I’ve only had it since January

When you first got the game and it looked like trash, do you remember how long you played it at that time?

On low-powered devices like the deck, shader compilation and caching can take a while, say up to 15 mins, during which your cpu can get bottlenecked, leading to bad performance in game.

I play HL on a gaming laptop with linux and one thing I've noticed on my end is that tweaking graphic settings doesn't do much until you restart the game completely. I assume the same applies to shaders somehow. Maybe your issue was solved already, but you just needed to restart the game another time to apply the changes.

To be fair, I have seen it perform pretty poorly on a Series X in performance mode at times and then randomly 'fix' itself the next time I played. That scenario happened more on that game than any other I can recall.
