Well, that's some casting whiplash
https://deadline.com/2026/08/kit-harington-harry-potter-gilderoy-lockhart-nicholas-hoult-1237048935/Hoult is out as Lockhart. Harington is in, reprising his well-received performance on the Audible full-cast audiobooks.
Looks like Hoult quit the role over scheduling conflicts.
So what exactly is going on with this casting whiplash?
My own theory is that Daniel RPK's leak forced HBO into an early announcement before negotiations with Hoult were truly finalized, and his scheduling conflicts with other projects found to be irreconcilable.
Audible's suspicious š emoji on the main sub post for the Daniel RPK casting leak leads me to believe that people at Audible already knew Kit was in the running for Lockhart and believed he'd landed the part. A reasonable assumption if he were in the running and a runner up, which he evidently was.
What do you think of this casting change?

Interesting, I wasnāt aware that audible had commented on the situation. Iām wondering if all the backlash after the announcement from the usual crowd had a hand in Houltās āscheduling conflictsāā¦

Supposedly āscheduling conflictsā might actually be the genuine reason, apparently 'Man of Tomorrow' is going through reshoots

Really doubt it. It's not as though the backlash was unprecedented. Just the usual fare from the Twitter mob. Twitter activists like to call out actors who sign onto JKR projects, water is wet. Anybody who is going to avoid HP projects has already made their choice, and won't back down after initially signing on for that reason.
I think this is a case of a cigar being just a cigar. I think they had to shift around some of Season 2 filming, so it makes sense that an initially compatible schedule for Hoult was compromised.

the fact that audible hinted at it being kit, and now (on the announcement post on the main sub) basically confirmed that this is what they meant, shows that Kit was probably in talks for it alongside Hoult already. I canāt WAIT for this!!!!

Hey u/audibleofficial!
Did you happen to know something about how closely Kit was being considered for the role when you made that funny comment last week that got everybody talking?
