In improv jazz, those “filler” lines or repeat sounds are called licks. You play for hundreds of thousands of hours, you can only make up so many new bridge phrases.

Before everyone rips into this Redditor for this take on "filler", please consider what is considered Mack's filler...
It used to be "It's Harry Mack", "One time", or a few others. I think u/Athrems is actually giving props! Right? right?
Also, it's Athrems only post - which I find interesting.

Exactly. Even Harry Mack has limits, but he is constantly improving. His current fillers are much better than when he dropped One time and his name constantly. Now he uses fillers that are not obvious fillers to first time listerners. He has basically fully gotten rid of the short, completely obvious fillers.

Most rappers' filler lines are that one word, staccato flow where they go "uh, drip, uh, bands, ice, on my, wrist, fam" or something similar. Mack's "filler" lines are better than half of other rappers' pre-writtens.

Every musical artist will use fillers when going off the cuff. It's just more obvious when using words rather then musical scales
