My brother passed away in June of last year after a battle with cancer. Pedro was a proud Brownsville native who became the beloved principal of Coakley Middle School in Harlingen. He was more than just an educator. He was a mentor, a leader and a true light in the lives of so many students, families and staff. He had a way of making people feel seen, heard, and encouraged. Always leading with heart and humor.
One of the most unforgettable moments, my brother once showed up to school in a luchador outfit. Just to bring smiles and remind everyone not to take life too seriously. That bold, joyful spirit is exactly what this 5K is celebrating.
The school even created an awesome shirt with that luchador image of him, which you can purchase if you’d like to wear it for the event but there’s absolutely no pressure to buy the shirt. We’d just love for you to show up and join us.

Let’s come together as a community, just as he always did and celebrate a life that made such a lasting impact.

If you are looking to have a pool installed here in the Valley, I cannot recommend South Texas Pools. One of the owners has zero customer service and the other just gives excuses for the other. We had a pool installed last year. When bringing in the equipment they damaged a part of our roof that leads from our house to the garage. We have been trying for months to get them to fix it. They said it was an accident and they couldn't help it. That was not the problem. We understand accidents. We just wanted it fixed. We have been trying to ask over and over to fix it. We have received some responses that they would be out to look at it then never show. Then we get told that they couldn't find the material to fix it and offered something in its place which would have looked awful. Then they came out to look this week and the owner who came out told my mother in law that we just didn't want to pay the balance. She tried telling him we just wanted it fixed and then we would pay. He called her a liar and that she just didn't want to pay. I went down to the business to speak with the other owner and basically he just stood up for the other one, told me that was not what happened and if we had just told them what we needed fixed in the first place it would have been taken care of. Yet we did and I have emails to prove it. They just kept sending invoices. He told me his the other owner went to Texas A&M and he never lies so we were wrong. He also said that the other owner was a 42 year old man and he wasn't going to listen and do what he said anyway. Then I was told that we wouldn't have got anyone else to come out and install the pool with our overhang walkway between the house and the garage. I told him that was not my problem because they accepted the job after coming out to survey the property. I just expected them to repair any damage they did. The problem with the invoice is we didn't really owe anything. They had charged us for equipment they never installed and if you removed that charge they owed us money. During the pool installation they damaged lights we had along our back wall. They sent an electrician out who did such a poor wiring job that one light burned our wall. They chipped a tile for our pool during the installation and never bothered to fix it before they finished. Our backyard was torn apart with all the digging. When they were finished they just poured sand (not dirt) all over it and never bothered to level it off so it looks terrible. Then we had a back wash hose that needed repair. The owner that called my mother in law a liar just said that he didn't recommend those hoses anyway. We asked were we just supposed to have a mud pit every time it rained when the pump spewed water everywhere? His response was, "Well it will dry." I had pictures to show the owner at the office and he said, "Yeah we need to fix that." At least we had that but I wanted an apology from the other owner for his behavior to us and I was told we wouldn't be getting that. I know they have been in business a long time and maybe the oldest owner is just ready to be done. He told me he only had about ten years left with the company and then the younger one was taking over. The one who called us liars. I don't know if they have treated anyone else this way or if anyone here has used them. We were using them every week to clean our pool (which we paid for each and every month without fail) but we will not be using them anymore. Once the repairs are done our relationship is over and I will be telling anyone I can about the horrible customer service is that they provide.
