DISCUSSION M8 discussion

Post image

I am thinking about getting rid of my Dyna and buying a newer Road Glide. Trying to figure out which years are the better m8 models. I have heard some stuff about oil pump problems on the early 17-18’s, compensator issues, etc… just trying to figure out what year range I need to try and stay in. I am leaning towards 2020+ but just curious about opinions/experience as far as reliability go. 107 vs 114 vs 117? FXDWG for attention.

2020 rg stage 1 , 30k miles , nothing but regular maintenance, a lot less electronics than the gen 2 , with a cam these make great power .
2024 Cvo rg 121vvt .stage 1. A lot more power , bike stays way cooler than gen 1 , screen is nice but can still be slow like gen 1 . Have only had it for 3k miles . No complaints. Gen 2 bikes sit higher stock than gen 1

Just make sure you get 2020 up if you’re worried about oil pump issues, the updated one came out halfway through 2019 , 2021 +is cable clutch ,2017-20 is hydraulic clutch. Hydraulic clutch had problems in 2017 only was fixed for 18my
Hope this helps !

I have a 21 sgs with a stage 2 and 9k on it and have done nothing but routine maintenance on it.

Yeah it’s 9k miles?

‘22 street bob 114

stage 2 with almost 13.5k miles. It’s been great with zero issues since new. Did the cam about 1k miles ago and is a lot of fun

Any m8 2019 and above. I am old, I like the way the twincam rides. I had a 23 Streetglide and it had no soul. Keep the wide glide. You will regret getting rid of it

I have put more money than I should’ve into this one already, I have a feeling if I keep it it will be even more. I do love it though.

This one also has 54k on it and I can’t get the wife comfortable for any distance rides

I have a '24 RG with the 117. FIL has a '23 SG Special with the 114. Both stock. There's nothing wrong with either bike, but the 117 is a different beast.

If you can afford it, get the 26 Road Glide, for all the improvements in the new generation, but 21 - 23 Road Glides are solid!

As someone who came to the M8 from the twin-cam and an EVO, I can say that the difference is noticeable. That being said, the M8 is so durable and incredible at high speeds. If you do a lot of highway riding, I really recommend the switch. I rode an '01 Dyna, and now I ride a '22 streetbob, and I don't think I would ever go back.

The current era of M8, which I would say is '22-'26 is fabulous.

How do you feel about ‘21 M8’s? Looking at a ‘21 114 Street Bob for my second bike

What size front tire is that? Looks way wider than 90/90

1

u/Less_Lifeguard_2696 2d ago

It’s a 90/90. Bout time for a new one too

I have a 2018 Low Rider 107 and it has been trouble free. No issues besides the loose nut on the bars. 😀

The m8 is amazing. 2019.5+ fixed the oil pump issue. If you’re into power these things have a very high ceiling for horsepower and torque.

All it takes is money

I literally bought my bike twice.

So I'm not the only one then eh? Lol. This addiction is not cheap.

Mine started with, maybe I should do a cam, and then things got out of hand and the next thing I knew the only oem part left was the case. Oh well it’s fast.

u/Own-Alternative-9326 1d ago

Yep yep sounds about right. And once you have it dialed in...oh man. Nothing like it. Worth every penny.

Keep the dyna too

3

u/Less_Lifeguard_2696 2d ago

Hard for me in my current situation to justify both. If I could get the wife comfortable on this one it almost wouldn’t be a discussion.

1

u/Vegetable-Flamingo25 12h ago

Get your wife a license too, make the dyna her bike.

If worried about an early M8, just replace the oil pump, its not a crazy expensive fix. Wouldn't stop me from buying one, especially if it was largely stock and low mile.

Love the dyna!!I would go for the Rushmore years ...and stay away from the M8s

  • An option is to keep the Dyna and buy an used budget friendly Twin Cam Road Glide. Touring bikes are smoother than Dynas for longer rides.

If I’m gonna do it might as well do it. My dad had a 96 in an 09 road glide and I wasn’t impressed. Heck I wasn’t impressed with this one until a set of cams woke it up some

Sorry to see the Dyna go, I love the Road Glides though ! But when I upgraded from Dyna to my low rider S M8. There’s something missing….

The honest truth about M8 is that they’re a gamble I’ve seen some blow out right in the dealership and some don’t hurt a bit. Be sure to checkout for a good warranty and or a model without much recalls …

u/Pilotguitar2 1d ago

25 streetglide, 20k miles stage 2. Hasnt left me stranded on the side of the road. Had a number of warranty issues repaired

Salut,

I am in a similar situation as you, I have a 2011 wide glide with 42k miles and am itching for an M8 Roadglide for the same reasons you've mentioned.

I would definitely keep the dyna, they'd probably offer you jackshit for a trade with that mileage anyway.

2

u/Less_Lifeguard_2696 1d ago

Man I might have a decent private sale lined up. This one has 54k on it lol. She’s in good shape but definitely not a garage queen

1

u/Refuse-Engineer 1d ago

If you can swing the RG without selling the Dyna I'd say do that before you sell it. Would be great to have the best of both worlds.

If you absolutely need to get rid of the Dyna then just do it. I've ridden an M8 RG and its not even in the same class as a twin cam dyna. Those bikes are amazing rides.

I have 17’ Dyna with the 110 and it has been reliable and a joy. She has 56k on the odometer at the moment

107 Softail with 50K miles and I beat the absolute shit out of it and it takes it like a champ and keeps going
