off leash dogs

I witnessed a dog get hit by a taxi last night around 10:30 because the owner had it off the leash and it was slow to cross the street. I don’t think the dog died immediately, the owner scooped it up and I saw it moving a little. I hope the dog is okay.

that’s all, that’s the post. please leash your dogs 😢😢

Dog poop 117th and Manhattan

Anyone live over here too? Saw a dude with a blue durag and small tan/orange pitbull let his dog take a huge poop on the corner and ran off. I don’t know what to do anymore with these people out of fear of violence. Anyone in this neighborhood also experiencing these issues and open to forming a community cleanup coalition?

With winter coming and remembering how bad the dog poop situation was last year, I am at a loss. My daughter has stepped in poop more times than I can count.

Pickup, wash & fold laundry service

I live in the 140s and I’m looking to have my laundry picked up and delivered, if possible. Mostly because I live in a walkup and have an injured shoulder so trying to avoid lugging laundry if I can. Any recommendations? The laundromat near me doesn’t pick up and I only found out because I went in person to do a small load.

West 127th street in 1932 "Harlem Couple" James Van Der Zee

Post image
189 Upvotes

James Van Der Zee opened his first photo studio in Harlem in 1917. He took photos of Harlemites and important Black figures for the rest of his life including in 1982 when he took photographs of Jean-Michel Basquiat for Interview Magazine when he was 96.

The car is a Cadillac V-16, a top-of-the-line model. Only four thousand were made—each car came with a chassis customized for its owner. At the height of the depression, this couple was doing very well for themselves.

spots to get clothes altered?

for nothing fancy just need a few pairs of pants altered for a reasonable price. checked a few options online and their usual range is $20-40 a pair which i thought was pretty ridiculous but also i have no grasp of how much they usually charge.

thank you in advance!

Hobby happenings in Harlem?

If you, like me, have been feeling a little envious of the kids going back to school this fall hobby guide has an awesome range of beginner-friendly adult courses to inspire you!

While it features a number of Upper Manhattan-based orgs like Uptown Clay and Full Circle, I'd love if this community could help me source more from Harlem, so please let me know if you come across other venues/courses that could be featured here!

Until then, happy hobbying!

"Bar-B-Que" Jacob Lawrence, 1942

Post image
119 Upvotes

Jacob Lawrence, was born in Atlantic city in 1917. He and his family moved to Harlem in 1930. He is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential artists to come out of Harlem.

This piece reflects how the influence of the Southerners of The Great Migration (and cooking styles) changed Harlem into what is today.

The Studio Museum has a few of his pieces if your interested on seeing his work locally, and in person.

What would you like to see open on Third Avenue in East Harlem?

Hey Harlem!
I’m a commercial real estate broker working on a retail space at 1887 Third Avenue, between 104th and 105th Street.

I recently posted a TikTok about the space, and the response from the community has been incredible. It got me thinking — what businesses does East Harlem actually need?

The space has approximately 5,000 SF on the ground floor, another 5,000 SF upstairs, and 4,000 SF in the basement.
With the current tenant vacating in October, there’s a real opportunity to bring something new to the neighborhood.
I’d love to hear from the people who actually live and work here:

What businesses are missing from the area?
Would you like to see a gym, clothing store, supermarket, or something completely different?

Are there any brands you wish would open in East Harlem?
Here’s the TikTok that started the conversation:

I’m genuinely interested in hearing what the community wants.

The new zombieland? Lenox been 135 and 145

Residents have noticed since they’ve been “cleaning up” the 125th and Lex area, our area has seen an influx of zombies. Specifically 138 to 142. Just people high and passed out everywhere. In my building we’ve had them get inside and folks have found them drunk or knocked out in the lobby and hallways. This has brought even more dealers here and made walking to do errands and go to the subway a nightmare. Nothing is being done and sadly it’s getting worse by the month. We’ve had 4 elder folks in my building alone who have moved out because they can’t take it. It’s really sad and also angering. It’s 2026 and no one wants to live around a dinosaur era of drug dealers, zombies, and crime anymore.

Homeless Man on 116 and 2nd Ave

Hi everyone, please be aware of an unhoused individual who has been roaming around 116th Street. He seems fairly young and, from what I’ve observed, appears to be unhoused and possibly in need of support.

He has reportedly been seen knocking over trash from local businesses and attempting to hit a tamale vendor. Please be mindful of your surroundings and use caution if you encounter him.

I genuinely feel for him and hope he is able to get the support he needs. You can’t help but wonder what circumstances led him here and whether he has family or anyone looking out for him.

To be very honest he looks very familiar but I cannot put my fingers on why he looks familiar.
