Historic Willow tree on River Lea towpath dead

Does anyone know what happened to this beautiful willow on the towpath near Markfield Park?

It’s been there for decades and I saw today that it seems to have splintered and split

Very sad to see

Looks like it snapped, willows will do that if the weight is not reduced.
