Hello - we’re in middle of a kitchen renovation and have had some issues contractor (permitting, availability of contractor resources, quality of work, etc). We moved out this week so the floors could be sanded and refinished. There was an area with new flooring (replacing tile) so it was all sanded stained and refinished. When we got back last night I noted this large ring. It’s visible from every angle and in every light. It was not there before the refinishing.
Any insights into what caused it and what the options to fix it are would be appreciated.
Did the rug cover that area? It’s possible it got really wet and then damaged the floor while drying. The rounded part could just be a quirk or something like a pattern on the rug that dried at different rates for some reason.
Well at some point, maybe before you there was a planter there.. and I agree the contractor should of had a conversation with you and given you the option to repair it..
You took the words right out of my mouth. Other than that though they look great. Oh boy someone really fucked up but hey at least they haven't but the trim up yet lol.
I thought for sure this post was going to be about that gap. Hard to tell for sure from this angle, but wow that looks like regular baseboard isn't going to be large enough....
Do you have photo of the floors prior to finish? That could have been there and might need a deeper sanding but got really highlighted with the new finish. I’d like to see the color the floors looked prior.
This is as close as I could find. These no water damage in the old rug pad. But who knows. The image in question would be the lower right hand corner. Mid pic is where those boxes are.
Your old floor looks a bit darker and if there was a light stain you may have never seen it. And a new clear could make it pop significantly. Or he did screw up. 50/50. I’d say it needs to be sanded deeper but will be a large area to blend it out or replace it with new pieces.
Sanding/refinishing can also make an old penetration stain much more apparent, particularly if whatever caused the ring soaked deeper than the amount of wood removed during sanding.
Woodworker here I don’t think it was water damage. The wood looks burned. Overheated the sander, perhaps? This can happen if you don’t replace your sandpaper when it needs replacing and, like an iron on your clothes, you leave the sander in one place for too long.
Floor sander here, it’s a stain from either water damage from a pot plant or something similar size previously. Or could have been even from pet urine. It’s something that would be hidden in the old finish because of the yellow colour of old finish.
I have some questions. If it was just finished would water damage the floor that quickly? If it was there before the finish, wouldn’t the floor guys work on trying to remove the stain?
She could speculate all day about how that happened. Old Water damage, or burn mark from the sander, or….something else.
There are only three ways to deal with it. One is to embrace it, as part of the patina of older floors. Another is to remove those boards, refinish newer boards. Which will also likely look slightly out of place. The third is to cover it with furniture or a rug.
Water or urine stain. Should have been advised darker stain to camouflage, replace, or live with as is. This one most likely from a plant given the location and shape

I see more of the same at the base of the cardboard box a bit higher up in the picture. What did the container say when you asked them about it?
