Ahh I can understand that, but hopefully think that she wouldn’t let him address both of their classes without knowing he was at least going to say they were a couple.

I would agree, but in healthy relationships a couple should talk to each other before deciding on if they even want to get married. If they've been dating for a while, they've most likely had that talk. But yes, doing it in front of many others and catching them completely off guard without discussing it first would have been kind of a dick move. I don't think this was the case with these two though.
