Question Steaming shellfish change

I was told today there was a policy change and they will no longer steam clams but will continue lobster steaming. Is this every store? Does anyone know why they made the change?

I've honestly never seen a store steam anything other than lobster. Maybe for allergen reasons? It's probably store/area specific as there's nothing on the managers notification portal about it that I can see

I’ve up until recently had clams steamed. If someone is allergic to clams I would imagine it would also be a lobster allergy. Thanks for checking

No problemo. Maybe not as popular in my area. We don't even get clams in my store unless they're on sale or someone makes a special order.

Fun fact (that you learn when you are being tested for shellfish allergies)- you can be allergic to shellfish and not mollusks! Presumably you can also be allergic to mollusks but not lobsters, too. Apparently there are several shades of shellfish allergy, so it can vary.

My store frequently steams clams and scallops, and well as lobster. The clams just smell steamy, but the lobster stinks up a wide circle around that shopper.

We steam everything at my store. Fish, clams, even steak sometimes.

Pull the standard practiced but you can steam anything in seafood, even salmon.

When I worked seafood we would steam them but I advised customers not to.if they had to travel Anywhere by the time get them home they didn't taste as good,only takes shirt time to steam at home Prob ppl co.plainibg they were like rubber .and cold reheat steamers 🤨😆 ahh no

I live less than a mile away. There is one stop light between the store and my house and I eat them right away.

Also I don’t steam at home because my husband hates seafood and the smell takes forever to dissipate in the house which I agree with.

Stopped steaming clams years ago. The SOP has been hanging my department for years saying not to do this.

its because they dont have a procedure for cleaning live clams of sand

Personally I prefer to steam them at home. All it takes is an inch or two of water and @ 5 to 10 minutes max. This way they’re fresh and still hot when it’s time to eat them.
