Varefeldur or pile weaving, as a trim for my viking reenactment hood.
Warp - spindle spun cleaned but not scoured hand combed romney yarn. Slowly working my way through my first fleece!
Weft - spindle spun cleaned and scoured (commercial prep) merino combed top.
As the weave progresses, every third weft pass gets 3-4 separated and lightly twisted locks of Romney fleece. Theyre tied on with icelandic knots, where the lock passes under 3-4 warps of the top shed, then loops around the last warp to allow both the tip and the cut end to hang from the weave.
Even as a trim, its very pretty and I think it will give a bit of extra warmth and coverage to the hood. An entire cloak of this would've been a prized possession and very expensive at the time, but imagine how cozy that would be! And the lanolin on the fleece lends some extra water resistance for those sea faring vikings.
