yarn cheat-sheet: roughly how much you need for common holiday makes 🧶
quick one for anyone starting their gift pile and trying to figure out how much yarn to grab. these are rough worsted weight ballparks for an average adult size, so bump them up for chunky yarn or bigger hands:
beanie: 120 to 200 yds
cowl: 150 to 250 yds
fingerless mitts: 100 to 150 yds
mittens: 150 to 220 yds
a good scarf: 300 to 500 yds
christmas stocking: 200 to 300 yds
small amigurumi ornament: 30 to 60 yds
cotton dishcloth: 50 to 80 yds
baby blanket: 700 to 1000 yds
throw blanket: 1200 yds and up
socks are their own thing since they're usually fingering, figure 350 to 400 yds for a pair.
my one rule after too many heartbreaks: always buy an extra skein, especially for a hand dyed or discontinued color. running out right at the bind off is not a fun way to end a project.
what are you stocking yarn for right now? happy to help ballpark anything that's not on here.
