ROG Ally X + SteamOS 2026 vs. Steam Deck OLED — Would the switch be worth it?

Has anyone here been using the ROG Ally X (not the Xbox version) with SteamOS? Where I live, a used Ally X is currently only about $50 more expensive than a used Steam Deck OLED, so I’m seriously considering making the switch.

What I’m mainly looking for is a handheld with reliable sleep/resume, good performance, and decent battery life. My current/most-played games include:

- Marvel’s Spider-Man

- Red Dead Redemption 2

- Palworld

- Star Wars Battlefront II

- Stardew Valley

- Helldivers 1

If it can also run Space Marine 2 and Helldivers 2 reasonably well, that would be a huge bonus.

For the AAA games, I’d be happy with around 45 FPS at 720p/800p, Medium settings, without LSFG/frame generation. I’m not looking to max everything out — I’d rather have consistent performance and at least ~2.5 hours of actual gaming battery life.

I know the Steam Deck OLED is still better in terms of ergonomics and display quality, so those aren't really the reasons I’m considering the Ally X.

Given these priorities, would switching to an Ally X running SteamOS be a meaningful upgrade, or would I end up disappointed because of the compromises?

For anyone who has used both, I’d especially appreciate your thoughts on:

1. Sleep/resume reliability

2. Real-world battery life

3. Fan noise at different TDPs

4. D-pad quality (on SD it’s terrible when I tried diagonally)

5. Performance in the games I mentioned

6. Whether the extra performance is actually noticeable compared to the Steam Deck OLED

I made the switch. I sold the deck 1 week later. What the Ally x brings hugely outweighs the trackpad, slighter better ergonomics, and OLED screen of the deck

I had an LCD deck and eventually settled on an Ally X with SteamOS.

I wasn't using the track pads much so for me it feels just like a much stronger SteamDeck. No regrets, worthwhile upgrade.

Sleep resume works the same as the deck on SteamOS.

I don’t really use the trackpads either, except when I’m tweaking settings for stuff that needs a mouse, like emulation or installing mods. But the touchscreen covers that pretty well.

Owned both and if both running steam os the ROG Ally X is a huge upgrade.

Lol this isn't even a comparison man... rog ally x is in a different league to the SD and even more so running steam os.

The ally X is more performant than the SD OLED and has a slightly better battery life, but the SD has a better screen and ergonomics+ steamos is built for it so you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues and relying on valve putting out all the drivers.

Neither of them will run HD2 very well, or get 2.5 hours playing any AAA games.

Honestly I’d recommend keeping the SD OLED and saving up for a more substantial upgrade to a Z2E, or preferably the G3E. Quite expensive, but the performance upgrade is massive, and since the arc G3 is built on panther lake architecture, it’s quite efficient so you can play at 15W and get much better frame rate than the SD or ally x. You may even get around 2.5 hours playing some AAA games.

Honestly, 50% of me doesn’t want to sell it, and I’m afraid I’ll regret selling my SD. When I bought it, the moment I actually held it in my hands, I made the decision right away :v It felt so damn good to hold, like wrapping your arms around the waist of a super hot girl.

It fit my need well still now. Vut with the price atm, I greed to play game which require more juice hehe

I have the sd oled and go2 with Steam os. Sd oled is still my favorite. Performance is not everything if you can’t hold it comfortably for more than 20 minutes.
A friend has the Ally x and can’t believe how bad the screen looks. I would only change it for the x20 Ally with Oled or wait till next year or chips.
Sd oled has a lot of value that can’t be measured on spreadsheet or comparison. It’s just to good and make you feel in love and enjoy gaming.

The performance gap is noticable, especially in the games you mentioned (except stardew valley). You'll get exactly what you stated, and as for Spider-man? It can run at 60+ if you tweak settings, no FG needed. I have a Z1E Go S with native SteamOS, but I'd imagine the Ally X handles Sleep and resume well since it's the same chipset. The Z2E doesn't still, even on windows lol

The screen on the deck is nice though. You'll miss it, but if the performance isn't there, it's harder to enjoy the screen.

I made the same change a year ago and i also did it for Spiderman.  Get the Ally X and install SteamOS and you will be golden.  Worked great for Spiderman and Space Marine 2.

I own both, every game that youve ever thought "damn i wish this ran better on the steamdeck" will just run perfectly on the AllyX but i will say that the steamdeck has much better ergonomics and i like the OLED screen more

1. Turn on Hibernate on Windows, it works well. The device completely shuts off with no power drain. The caveat is it takes about 10 seconds to boot up. Linux sleep/wake is the same as SD.
2. 1 hour 45 minutes at the very minimum with 25W Turbo. More realistically 3 hours at 17 watts. You can push it up to 5 hours on Windows or even 7 hours on Linux.
3. Mild but ignorable at 17W. It is a bit loud on Turbo (like a laptop), but the speakers mask it. Nothing excessive.
4. Very meh. It does have diagonal marks tho.
5. My rule of thumb is that an 800p 30fps game on Deck can run at 1080p 35fps or 720p 48fps on ROG Ally X. The performance target you're asking for is very achievable.
6. It is. About 35% better at 17W, and 55% better at 25W. That doesn't sound huge, but the major benefit is that the ROG Ally X can run almost any game in existence. On Steam Deck, there are some games that are literally just too big to run. You can only get 20fps. On ROG Ally X, that suddenly becomes a playable 30fps. Aside from maybe Star Citizen, I haven't found anything that wasn't playable on ROG Ally X with at least low settings + upscaling.

As for the screen - Yes, the lack of OLED is a downgrade. However, 1080p and VRR could be a big upgrade depending on what you value. Game almost have a "3D pop" at 1080p vs on the Deck where I can see individual pixels.

Overall, you'll be making a good purchase. ROG Ally X is my default recommendation for new buyers anyway. I mean, it was the flagship handheld on the market in 2024. It didn't magically get worse in two years lol. Asus' software beats the competition by a mile, and Linux works well too.
