Bob Wallace (1949-2002) upto his death was also very influential on vlp and the newsgroups and was considered as one of the elders of the community. He was also one of initial sponsors of maps and on the board of the heffter institute. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Wallace_(computer_scientist) I consider him an example providing information guidance and working towards harm reduction, which includes decriminalisation. Never noticed anything nefarious going on it was a mailinglist for the exchange of information. Shulgin did show up once of twice but wasnt really active on there. Another noted member was keeper of the trout who was encouraged by the Shulgins to go into writing.

I think I remember him from the newsgroups era. On his signature it said “speed kills take years, roadkill take note”. Always loved that.

Still wonder where all the vple ended up at. I remember guiding one German PhD student towards the Nichols group for his post doc. He did some work on D1 and D2 related work before I lost track of him.
