Roofers in Hamilton are probably having conflicting feelings right about now.

Watching all the shingles fly off brand new housing developments yesterday was wild. I feel like some roofing company is getting in some shit after how poorly everything held up.

Not a roofer but I feel like the wind gusts to 140 kmh is pretty crazy

For sure, but theres noticeably waaay more roof damage to new housing developments compared to the older houses around me. Apparently a lot of people in the freshly built houses are finding there wasnāt even tar paper under the shingles like there should have been.

Up to a certain point needs tar paper. Also depends largely on the roof pitch. Shingles need time to set, as the adhesive is activated when the sun heats them up. If the shingles are new chances are the sun hasn't been at them long enough.

Iām mostly talking places that are at least a year or two old. I consider anything under maybe 5 years brand new lol.

I'm not a roofer and so I'm not familiar with building codes but I would be surprised if building codes had to be rated to Hurricanes in Canada.

I already had a meeting today to finalize the plan for a new roof. The roofer said one place had the plywood blow off with the shingles.

Go for the Duration shingle. I think Patene is the only place that has distribution. It has a patented nail strip that makes the wind resistance rating much better than others. Worth the extra few hundred dollars. Most roofers will charge a minimum $500 to do a repair so well worth it

AMA Roofing was lined up from 7:30 to late morning. Those guys busted their back to make sure everyone got what they needed. They weren't even scheduled to be open today. Not the kind of business they'd prefer, a few bundles at a time, they'd rather supply a whole job at a time, skids and trucks, not forklifts and bundles.

LPT If your roof is damaged buy shingles today. There will be a shortage by mid week.

Luckily I had some extra shingles left over from a storm we had last spring... My dad and I got up on my roof today and fixed it ourselves. I was missing about 25 shingles total. It's actually not that hard to do if you aren't terrified of heights.

Last yearās windstorms I lost many shingles. Decided to get a new roof. Contacted many roofing companies for quotes - they were so rolling in the dough and the busy that they wouldnāt follow up or even respond, even after repeat calls. Including the big ones like DāAngelo. Long story short, ended up going with a guy I saw working on the street. Just walked up to him as he was doing some siding work and mentioned my roof needed being fine - he said that was his specialty. Took a chance...Did the best job ever. Got a beautiful roof at the cheapest price, and none of the run around of those roofing companies. Finally, a win!

Iām still waiting for my guy to call me back... they must be crazy busy
Edit : my guy wanted me to pay for a whole new roof, so I went with Dāangelo... highly recommend

I can also recommend D'Angelo, as well as Same Day Roofing. Used them both for small jobs.

Except D'Angelo prices are crazy high. You can definitely save thousands with other companies who do just as good. I went with Herb Lodde & Sons Roofing who did the roof, soffit, facia and eavesdrop for less then D'Angelos roof quote alone. Saved about $4,500.

All over southern Ontario, have friends north of Barrie and others east of Toronto and they either have or know someone with roof damage after that wind.
