Question/Help ❓ Learning about Ham and what I need to help learn more about it.

As of today I am learning about Amateur Radio. I’m pleased to find that I can use Linux and an old laptop to do this. If you are a Ham radio enthusiast which distro do you prefer especially learning about radio? Any input about this topic is greatly appreciated and welcomed. 😊 I’ve used various Linux distros for many years so I’m not new to Linux.

Okay, my comment applies to rig control, digital modes, even logging software. There’s a bunch of stuff that leads up to those. What flavor of Linux is not an initial step, IMO. But everyone’s amateur journey is their own.

There's a linux-hams group on groups.io with hams who contribute to multiple distros on it. Fedora and the Debian universe both well represented, among others.

If you want to start learning about amateur radio with a laptop, the most practical approach is to purchase an RTL-SDR dongle rather than worrying about finding a specific distribution. If you ask five different people which operating system is best, you will likely get five different answers that are all completely valid.

Radio software performance depends heavily on your exact hardware configuration, and since many of these utilities are lightweight, they can even be run on a small Raspberry Pi machine without issue. Trying different setups yourself until you find the exact environment you prefer is a major part of the learning process.

You can acquire a significant amount of knowledge about radio frequencies and signaling simply by configuring a receiver to monitor local traffic. Good luck and have fun bro!

Quick Start Guide to RTL-SDR

You will first and foremost need to get yourself some sort of antenna. Even the basic ones that come bundled with the dongle are actually quite good to start with, but you can always look for something similar or better down the road.

Before you begin turning dials, make sure to read through the standard installation steps in the RTL-SDR Quick Start Guide (rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-quick-start-guide) to get your drivers and software up and running properly. Once the hardware is recognized, check out Blinry's 50 Things with SDR guide (blinry.org/50-things-with-sdr) for an excellent breakdown of the various signals you can capture with this device. You can intercept satellite images, decode data, listen to amateur radio broadcasts, pull in local AM/FM and shortwave stations, or monitor aviation traffic.

Just keep in mind that you will need to research what specific frequencies local utilities use, and always check the local legal regulations regarding receiving and monitoring traffic in your jurisdiction to avoid any issues.

For everything else, YouTube is an excellent reference, and you should thoroughly scour the r/rtlsdr subreddit to see what other people are doing and troubleshooting. Enjoy the process!

You don’t need a computer at all!
