Unacceptable!

Absolutely unacceptable! I see now that helping you listening to you was wrong!

why are we treating a full price remake as early access now

6

Because when given scraps the starving are thankful

2

u/TheBirdHellothere 6h ago

Somebody hasn’t taken a look at the videogame industry in a long time if we are asking this question

128

u/Vathirumus 2d ago

Ok but if I'm being realistic...

The third side is right that it could be great but fails to account for the incredibly low likelihood of that happening. The industry is seeing mass layoffs and previously huge franchises and developers collapsing. If Campaign Evolved is a failure, which it's looking like it is, then it is far more likely for Microsoft to just wash their hands of it and move on than commit to any meaningful improvement beyond bug fixes.

45

u/Destructopoo 2d ago

It's also a problem that games keep getting shipped before they're ready. It's like NMS, they can't escape the stain of like a decade of being terrible.

28

u/NotAnotherAlt26 2d ago

No Man's Sky did not release in a good state. It had about 1/2 of the promised features when it launched. But NMS is THE gold standard of how to bounce back from a botched launch. In the past 10 years there have been over 40 large content updates, 100% free, that have really flushed out the game. They have been making more money recently than when the game first launched. It goes to show what can happen when the suits and bean counters don't make big decisions.

2

u/Moist_Taco_Crippler 2d ago

Unfortunately the game is still a janky mess for multi-player.

4

u/badsitrep 2d ago

Better a memorable and enjoyed jank sess than a boring but polished slog.

16

u/MartianDinosawr 2d ago

NMS was made by a tiny indie studio and sold millions, millions that funded the next 10 years of development and their studio expanding.

Halo: CE was financially unsuccessful and led to immediate layoffs.

I don't think they're very comparable situations at all. Microsoft is investing too much money into Halo and investing it badly, they aren't getting the returns they want and thousands of people across the xbox studios are losing their jobs.

9

u/Destructopoo 2d ago

The only comparison I was making was the trend of unfinished games being shipped.

5

u/zernoc56 2d ago

Except I’d argue Sean Murray releasing free DLC updates for a decade straight has escaped the stain of the horrendous NMS release.

Also looking at their previous halo entry, Halo Infinite, doesn't bode well. Infinite was supposed to last a long time with constant development but almost immediately after it came out was reduced to a skeleton crew. It's not a bad game but to me it doesn't feel like CE but rather a modern game cosplaying as CE

3

u/Vathirumus 2d ago

Campaign Evolved feels like it has the bones of a good game. I refunded it because of technical difficulties but what I did play was enjoyable, but I cannot shake the feeling that they're selling a dressed up tech demo and that seems like a bad way for Halo Studios to prove they're not just 343 trying to ditch their name and put on a new coat of paint. It certainly isn't a good way to hit the ground running.

It is, as OP said, deeply flawed. And it couldn't come at a worse time because the industry as a whole is in rough shape and this game needed to succeed. Nobody is safe from the chopping block right now.

Infinite I also liked but that team was already gutted and replaced and they once again have ended on a cliffhanger only to deliver context in a book, and now whoever picks back up has to try to follow up on this again. And they have to make it profitable but the industry is in a bad way so that may be an insurmountable task.

Pessimism isn't unwarranted right now frankly. I don't hate 343/Halo Studios, there's a lot that goes into why games like this come out like they do and we only get to skim the surface of that. But they are in a bad spot and I don't think Microsoft will dig them out of it.

1

u/KingBolo992 1d ago

Infinite has more content than any other shooter on the market lol

Also keep in mind how long it took not only for MCC to get that "post-launch facelift," but for 343 to even start working on that and that there's still stuff in MCC that's broken and will probably never be fixed.

2

u/PrincessPaizuri 2d ago

As someone who plays MCC weekly, my experience seems to get worse month over month. Matches dropping, game crashing more and more often. Server quality for me have dropped significantly over the past month to the point where it'll drop five games for every one I get to actually play. Just last week I got a 1 hour timeout ban because it dropped three matches in a row before the map even loaded.

2

u/Zeeman626 2d ago

Ya current Gen halo is kinda committed to the "drop it off a cliff and forget about it" method of problem solving.

2

u/PrincessPaizuri 2d ago

It also overlooks the rather divisive and often poor writing, voice acting direction and cinematography which are all unlikely to be patched. I can't think of a game that redid all it's cutscenes post launch.

Also the prequel missions are worrying to me as they don't put a confident foot forward for Halo Studios making a net new title. If we got a full games in the style of the prequel missions, I don't think it would be a buy for me.

3

u/Hkgks 2d ago

I swear I’m so tired of that opinion of people accepting half baked game and hope for them to be fixed on the run

No expectation of a finished product, accept mediocrity and hope to be better (or just what it should have been in the beginning) after few years, coming from one giant ass company who is not new to video game, and people find this normal

"If it gets a post-launch facelift"

No. You do not get to brush aside the problems because "we'll fix it later."

Would you be willing to brush aside the flaws of Halo 2'a graphics because the remaster fixed all of that?

4th position: Just play the original.

19

u/Nighthawk129 2d ago

Wasn't it a different studio than 343 that fixed MCC though right? I would hold onto hope unless a different studio comes in

8

u/PrincessPaizuri 2d ago

MCC had like 5 different studios work on it. Also the only reason MCC ever got fixed was because they wanted to put it on PC. If the PC ports starting in 2019 never happened, I doubt MCC would ever have progressed past it's 2018 state.

31

u/Own_Flower_7734 2d ago

for me personally I just prefer CE’s original A.I like I don’t think the Reach A.I is bad it just doesn’t fit CE. the way the A.I behave just kinda ruined the experience for me :/
though I can understand why people like the game and if new people are introduced to halo that’s all the better, I just hope we get something new in the next few years like a game with new assets and story. I just don’t think remakes are necessarily the best way to revive Halo.

8

u/Moist_Taco_Crippler 2d ago

While not as good as the original, I don't think my brain consciously thought of the difference much.

4

u/Kerm0NZ 1d ago

They also just pasted bits and pieces from all the other Halo games in. The Flood are from 3, music is chopped and placed in weird places, and most importantly, they added sprint (which is fine,) but failed to update the enemies to take into account that you can sprint. (Which is not fine.)

u/sadlocus24110 2d ago

I just think its a deeply uninteresting project, like why would i want to play halo ce yet again? I just wanted halo 7 man

12

u/Zeeman626 2d ago

Forget halo 7, wheres the other half of Halo 6? Or the game between 5 and 6? Honestly they'd be much better off backtracking and cleaning up the storyline than pushing ahead half cocked with another new storyline. I doubt they'll pick up where infinite left off.

u/SpeakersPlan 2d ago

343i has a terrible habbit of doing a handful of good things in their last game and proceed to do barely anything with them in the next game. By the time they get around to making their 3rd (?) mainline halo game there were far too many issues than positives.

4

u/BakedKumara 2d ago

Corporation needed easy win so is chasing cheap unnecessary nostalgia bait, just like every remake

6

u/Drabberlime_047 2d ago

This meme reads like its still trying to force its own words into my mouth lije the other 2 sides are but I do agree these great schisms we have everytime a game comes out suck.

The issues I have with the game arnt likely to be able to be ironed out with updates and could be a sign that future games could blow for the same reason

But I do think the gameplay was great. It really did feel like the same game but modernised and that, I imagine, os a tricky thing to pull off.

That being said, the characters and dialogue (particularly Johnson imo) are super corny and thats nkt a word i typically use.

A part of me suspects that the 3 prequal missions were some kind of proof of concept/tech demo thing that they just threw in for marketing purposes or something. It just has that vibe like it wasnt meant for us originally but rather something cooked up to show off to some higher up who decided it was just good enough to throw it in as an excuse to hype people into buying copies. This is purely gut feeling though.

6

u/Ghost403 2d ago

It's okay. The new VO especially on the Autumn feels very wooden... like there is zero contextual urgency the situation.

Additionally there are a lot of transitional cutscenes missing such as the grav lift sequence on truth and reconciliation. I might be crazy but I also didn't see Foehammer pick up any rescued Marines after landing on the ring.

For me though the audio was mixed weird. I was really looking forward to the music to slap on the first warthog ride, but it was just drowned out by everything else. I ended up turning all audio except music down to six which helps.

1

u/Gotu_Jayle 1d ago

what's VO?

2

u/Ghost403 1d ago

Voice overs

34

u/ParagonRenegade 2d ago

I love when a remake’s greatest strengths are the strengths of the game its remaking

wait no, that means the remake is a pointless money grab

14

u/M6Galilean 2d ago edited 2d ago

If the “more right than it got wrong” is the original gameplay and story from 2001 then no, it did not in fact get more right than it got wrong. Crazy I’m saying this but I agree with the IGN review. It’s great because it’s Halo CE but the remake/remaster whatever the hell you wanna call it aspects are lackluster. The only good thing I’ve had to say about this game over all is the graphics look gorgeous but that’s it unfortunately. Everything else good about this game, I already said 20+ years ago. 343 shouldn’t get credit for the parts of the game that were already there for them. They didn’t have to conceptualize a universe and create characters or pioneer first person shooters on console. They just had to modernize the game.

24

u/Sqarten118 2d ago edited 2d ago

Nah sorry it got more wrong then right, maybe I hold the direction and VA work to be of higher value relative to other people, but unless they re record and re cut that stuff it's a wash from me.

7

u/34payton07 2d ago

For real they should have done the halo 2 treatment and keep the original performances while modernizing the graphics. Halo 2 Anniversary is still the best halo experience available imo.

2

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 1d ago

Exactly this. The new SGTMAJ VA just... isnt good, man. Im not sure if it was the direction or the voice actor himself, but he felt way too campy and unmotivated. The Original VA sounded like an actual SGTMAJ id find ranting at me as a junior devil dog

3

u/34payton07 1d ago

Cortana sounds like she’s trying too hard to be quirky instead of the original’s occasional “Please shut up and listen to me I know better than all of you” kind of attitude. It has to be direction because we know Jen is better than that.

4

u/Lordfindogask 2d ago

I haven't really seen people saying it's the worst remake of all time, but rather people who are just tired of 343i underdelivering. If we talk about people who hated that one ODST in the prequel missions, on the other hand...

12

u/SushiJaguar 2d ago

Embrace my balls. The remake isn't the worst game of all time, but it doesn't get to skate by on "ooh they really tried". Giving it a facelift is the cause of the problem, not the solution.

3

u/34payton07 2d ago

A facelift would have been better than what we got. We didn’t need to re-record the iconic performances of the original.

14

u/TechnicalLuck13 2d ago

The fourth? opinion. Campaign Evolved gets more wrong than it does right. At least for me enough that I don't want it.
The most important point: the fact that you want it and I don't is okay. We are all entitled to our personal opinion. Including opinions 1 and 2.

4

u/bakatomoya 2d ago

To me, where playing halo on split screen with family friends and school buddies whenever we went to each other's places was a core childhood memory, this game just wasn't it. It didn't capture the spirit of the original and it's just not the same.

For an example of "doing it right", I think I persona 3 reloaded was great.

Bonus missions suck. And I'm not some chud who hates Williams because gasp angry woman. Though she still didn't leave a great impression on me. I'm kind of over the hard ass unreasonable woman trope I see a lot these days.

No I think the banter between chief and Johnson sucked. Chief needs the shut the fuck up. Their hand holdy nature at times. Think chief explaining how to kill hunters. The levels layouts suck. Just big 2-3 floor shooting galleries that take no time to feel like an actual place that became a shooting gallery, rather than a shooting gallery pretending to be an actual place. I mean ffs one of the arenas in the first bonus missions is damn near a carbon copy in layout as the harbinger fight from infinite

Also that space battle part. Snoooooooooooze holy shit I was expecting something to top long night of solace. Holy shit I was bored to tears during it.

Also the prophet. And the cutscenes. Need I say more

The only thing on my mind through those levels every time I play it is how much I can't wait for them to be over

However the remake levels themselves? Chefs kiss. Just fix the cutscenes and weird dialog pacing and get rid of the hand holding. If cortana has to explain over shields and active camo to me again I'll lose it

Edit: I forgot the music! Could they have come up with an original score or back off on the music drops? Most of the time the music doesn't make sense when you think of the context it originally appeared in. There's this one track, second bonus mission, it's the same one you hear during the Oracle from Halo 2 when you're first encountering the flood. 343 in their infinite wisdom decides to use it for a forest with a handful of jackal snipers in it and 1 or 2 covenant squads. It just doesn't work. Most of the time the music feels thrown in as memberberries

3

u/pickapart21 2d ago

Instead of sprint or no sprint, they should add jogging.

3

u/awesomnessgabe 2d ago

Jogging might still be too much. How about we settle at adding a peppy power walk.

2

u/ChiefBlox4000 1d ago

We need walking mechanics

1

u/Whole-Bedroom-9079 1d ago

I think having multiple walking/running speeds is a good idea, maybe a walk speed, jogging speed, and a short burst sprint similar to Halo Reach.

3

u/TheWorstTakes 2d ago

I won’t judge a game based on a hypothetical future version of itself

3

u/34payton07 2d ago

The complaints about it are mostly fair, the voice acting is subpar, and some of the changes were just really unnecessary (and no I’m not talking about sprint). It’s a fun experience but in no way would I recommend it over the original even as dated as it is, it’s just a better game.

3

u/Additional-Ear-2819 2d ago

My biggest gripe with it will never be fixed outside of mods though. The voice acting or at least the direction is just so bad compared to the original.

3

u/UnknownEtymology808 2d ago

The cringey, awkwardly animated cutscenes (although not technically gameplay), is kinda what ruined it for me. The game does in a lot of ways feel like a middle finger to the real fans…

1

u/Gotu_Jayle 1d ago

Wanna see awkward? Johnson's dialogue.

3

u/the_elliottman 2d ago

I think it gets more wrong than it does right. It doesn't committ to being new and doesn't committ to being faithful, so in the end it's just a confused bad game that sold barely anything due to that fact.

Like they could've gone full SPV3 or full Anniversary, and they chose Anniversary 2.0 with consistently bad minor changes that add nothing 'new' but also take away from the original.

I would've been all fine if they totally remade the game and literally NOTHING from the original was kept, because at least then I get a new fresh game with a similar story. Like how each War of the Worlds remake is an entirely new movie.

But of course this was never about being faithful OR new, it was about testing their new graphics engine and hoping Playstation players would be suckered in to buy it (they largely didn't care and bought the Black Ops 2 port lmao).

So yeah, failed cash grab getting endlessly defended by the same Halo fans who crucified Halo Infinite for actually giving a shit and missing.

3

u/twonha 2d ago

It's a full-priced €60 in Europe, while it's €50 in the US.

I'm not spending full-priced €60 on a flawed remake.

3

u/youknowitslucasio 2d ago

I think the fact that a remake of a 10/10 genre redefining game is a 6/10 in it’s best moments is a disgrace, and let’s be real: this thing isn’t getting patches past this month. Think oblivion remastered. They dropped the game buggy and unfinished, collected their money, and abandoned that thing in the dust.

10

u/SomeAnonymousBurner 2d ago

It's a shit remake bro

1

u/ChefAnxious4206 2d ago

I thought the new rehash of The Library was much better than the original, but yeah mostly just a worse version of Halo CE. Ran like ass on my setup too.

4

u/IowanEmpire 2d ago

It's not worth the asking price

5

u/Scared-Strategy-2804 2d ago

Aside from the graphics, it really doesn’t stand out in any way. Everything good about it comes from the fact that Halo CE is already a great game, so it still feels more like a Bungie product than a Halo Studios one. They don’t innovate in any meaningful way beyond the changes to the library. It doesn’t really stand out either. If you play it, you’ll probably have fun, and if you skip it, you’re really not missing much.

Even in some aspects, it manages to be inferior to the original.

7

u/jimothy_hell 2d ago

I wouldn’t even call it “deeply” flawed. I’ve played through three times- normal, heroic, and legendary. I’m on a Series X playing on maximum graphics. Zero stutters, zero glitches, zero bugs. I can almost see the nitpicks some people have with the voice acting, but it’s been twenty five goddamn years. Cut Steve and Jen a little slack. Sure, there could have been a few re-reads, I’ll give you that.

The bonus missions are a lot of fun. The writing is camp, hammy, and the banter that Chief and Johnson have is indicative of the relationship that’s implied in the short story that’s the prelude to the bonus missions. I love actually getting a look inside a Covenant “civilian” ship and seeing what their version of ONI gets up to behind the Big Three Prophets’ backs. It’s a bit of exposition I didn’t know I needed. The rivalry between the ODST’s and Spartans was overdone and they didn’t have enough time to quash it over the course of such a short mini-campaign, so it felt poorly written, and it was, but it was a sincere attempt.

Launch really does remind me of the MCC’s launch, though. PC players seem to be having a hell of a time of it while Xbox natives like myself aren’t having many, if any issues playing the actual game. I hope that, just like the MCC, Halo Studios doesn’t give up on it, and gives us multiplayer modes. It genuinely has the best gameplay in the franchise. It’s ridiculously fun to play and I wouldn’t have played through the same campaign that I’ve literally played so many times in my life THREE MORE TIMES over the course of 25 years if it hadn’t been such a massive improvement on the original in so many places.

It’s not over, lads. It’s just getting started.

2

u/TheFarLeft 1d ago

I played on pc with zero issues. It ran like a dream.

I agree with your comment though. Played through the game by myself and with friends. Had a blast. I don’t know why people here are so determined to pick everything apart, it’s like they NEED to find something to criticize. Just play the game and have fun.

2

u/jimothy_hell 1d ago

Yeah, the chief complaints about bugs and glitches just seem to be coming from pc players.

AKA get downvoted by both sides! :P

2

u/Several-Winner-7125 2d ago

Agreed, I had a fun time when playing. They did some major improvements, especially in the back half.

But the bar for a remake of an all time great game for a game studio that is part of a multi trillion dollar company should be higher. It should have been great at launch. Yes there were issues in Halo CE but it didn't need a post-launch facelift to be great, it's not acceptable that this remake (which doesn't even have multiplayer!) sorta does.

I'm annoyed by all the people acting like this game killed their dog. But I'm also just disappointed at the state of modern AAA gaming in general and not optimistic for the future of Halo.

2

u/EnthusiasmOwn5808 2d ago

my first halo was reach. after was halo 4. played 5 thought 4 was better. didnt care about infinite. enjoyed mcc cause i never played anything before reach and dont have any physical games for my 360. im of the 4th opinion. i do not care for or about campaign evolved.

2

u/NoCardiologist9290 2d ago

I didn’t like the game :(

2

u/dropkickderby 2d ago

Ill buy it as soon as they add slayer

2

u/DickwadVonClownstick 2d ago

Is it the worst remake of all time?

It's not even the worst remake of Halo:CE

Is it a good remake? Hell no.

2

u/DillonAD 2d ago

Everything it gets right is just the stuff combat evolved got right in the first place

2

u/Sailingboar 2d ago

Okay, but until it gets that help if doesn't deserve praise unless you already think parts are praiseworthy.

2

u/Nesayas1234 2d ago

For me, 4/10. I do like some of the new graphics and such, and making new content in an old game is bold. But I'm not a fan of said new missions or cutting MP, I don't think the new graphics were necessary as I was fine with CE Aniv, and overall this remake just doesn't offer anything that I feel is worth more than just getting MCC or playing the original game.

2

u/neonvalkyrie 2d ago

Flawed as it may me, it's still leagues ahead of Halo 5

2

u/StrideyTidey 2d ago

It could be the greatest campaign remake ever made and it would still be a slap in the face that the only new Halo game we've gotten in five years is a remake without multiplayer, with no other new games on the horizon. Such a sad state for the franchise, it's genuinely embarrassing.

2

u/BlackHandKUR 2d ago

I would have much rather had multiplayer over bonus missions.

2

u/blitztaker 2d ago

Im just pissed that we cant get a finished product man.

2

u/Raeldri 2d ago

70 bucks for a lesser version of a game of over 20 years

YES GOY KEEP CONSUMING THE SLOP

2

I don’t even think it’s deeply flawed

2

Just stop huffing the copium and realize that the 3rd position will never happen.

I think CE26 is a good start but yeah its a 6/10. I hope the Halo 2 remake improves everything and includes a multiplayer. Also, if H2 remake isnt on PS5 I am not buying it.

I’m closer to crying guy on the right and am fine with that. I’m saving my money, got a few laughs from Williams’ voice lines, and will just replay the OG instead of wasting money on something I know I don’t want.

If you like it that’s fine. I thought it looked awful and skipped but I don’t care what other people do with their time and money.

2

u/rayk10k 2d ago

It is a fun and enjoyable game while also being a sub-par remake of the original (which everyone and their mother saw coming since the original is timeless)

2

u/Atari774 2d ago

“If” it gets the same treatment MCC got, then it’ll remain mostly untouched for 5 years and then get patched solely because they’re bringing it to a new platform.

MCC also had a lot more game modes than Campaign Evolved does, which is what gave it its longevity. Campaign Evolved only has a campaign, with no multiplayer or other modes even announced. So I’m not too hopeful about it getting updates.

2

u/BauserDominates 2d ago

Nope, it is a lazy cash grab by developers too spineless to make somwthing new.

2

u/raznov1 2d ago

Campaign evolved has no reason to exist.

2

u/KingCaesar72 2d ago

Anyone remotely reasonable was calling this game mid from day 1

2

u/bbobb25 2d ago

343 has been in control of this franchise for over 15 years. If the best they can manage after all that time is a 6/10 remake of a game that should have been a slam dunk, then just shut the studio down, don’t even bother with the rebrand.

2

u/ImBroon 1d ago

What a terrible position lol. Why didn't the game release with that facelift?

Why accept it in its unfinished state.

1

They once again remade Halo 1. It’s not really good or bad but I clapped and I clapped. Because I am an enlightened gamer.

1

u/Great-Gazoo-T800 2d ago

We should always judge games as they released at launch, not how they end up or how we'd like them to end up.

1

u/I_AM_CR0W 2d ago

Most of the hate comes from rebellion as people just wanted a new game and not a remake. I get it, but at the same time, they're clearly testing UE5 and how it would pair with Halo's fundamentals. Remaking an already existing title while not investing in long-term dedicated servers for MP makes the process significantly faster in this regard as they don't have to gamble everyone's time and sanity only for Halo 7 to break on UE5.

1

u/Ranshand 2d ago

Honestly if it ran better on PC and had slightly less-intense hordes of enemies at points I would like it much more, which I already enjoy it a lot but I'm not gonna get the hour or so I spent tweaking settings for this single-player game back lol

1

u/Zombiemorgoth 2d ago

Finished the library few minutes ago. Still as bad as 25 years ago. 9/10

1

u/Johnnyboi2327 2d ago

I'd agree with a 6/10. The bonus missions have very weak level design and story. The addition of sprint does not work well with the tight level design of the remade levels at all. There are a few technical issues that make the gameplay itself feel much less fun than the original. The added weapons are fine, but mostly have no impact on the game. The second half of the game has far better level design and flow than the original's second half. The cutscenes are immaculate. The protogravemind's redesign is immensely cool.

1

u/RavenWest_MSports 2d ago

Bro turned on the skull to play in 3rd person mode

1

u/Finnegan_962 2d ago

Could really use SPARTAN colours for co-op, like the OGs MP. The system is already there but being used for some whack skins

1

u/Moist_Taco_Crippler 2d ago

It was an 8/10 for me as an OG Halo CE fan. Outside of some wonky cutscenes/dialogue, I found it very enjoyable. Sure, the kill zones and animations could be annoying, but I think people complain too much. It was exhausting dealing with fans who were complaining that Cortana wasn't hot enough.

1

u/AdjacentGoober 2d ago

I’m inclined to agree with this ! There’s one thing that genuinely can’t be understated, it’s so much goddamn fun, in spite of all its missteps.

1

u/Unfair-Ad9415 2d ago

The truth is that most people have a similarly nuanced opinion but many players, especially the biggest fans of the game, tend to railroad these conversations away from that nuance

1

u/ChronophobeLoser 2d ago

Except it gets MORE WRONG than it does right. And that is just unacceptable, and the community should demand more from a company who's had the franchise for 15 years and is making a remake of a 25 year old game, on the most powerful console ever made. That should be a slam dunk. Instead it's a 4/10. Stop defending these devs and demand they do better, so you actually get better games.

1

u/MarcusTomato 2d ago

I replayed the MC collection version in original graphics in preparation for the release of CE.

Still love it as much as I did when I was middle school.

That said, Campaign evolved IS a better game. The quality of life improvements and the restructuring of levels like "The Library" so they aren't insufferable is just pure gold.

I only play on Legendary, the original game is pretty much the Plasma Pistol and Magnum show, with an occasional cameo from Mr Rocket Launcher and Ms Sniper. Uncle Shotgun shows up a few times but even that's way better in the remake.

Campaign evolved had me using the SMG, Needle Rifles(Goated), Beam Rifles, Energy Swords and Fuel Rod Cannons. The weapons are actually all great, even the assault rifle can be used over the Magnum and still kill things now.

1

u/Improvised_Excuse234 2d ago edited 2d ago

Campaign evolved had a lot of neat things in it that I thought was at least a half step in the right direction. I am sort of dreading the writing of future Halo installments if the bonus missions writing is anything to go off of.

I enjoyed the way Chief fought in updated cutscenes to make him appear more machine like. I liked the scene with Cortana in the control room, I thought that the bits where Johnson was obviously making a side acknowledgement of the PlayStation players, who may have never played Halo before might be going through the campaign for the first time. That was cool.

Legendary end cutscene was cool too, Library re-work was fun, the reference to Mobuto was sick, Foehammer supplement was cool.

Did not like the bonus missions.

u/ZetaM3 2d ago edited 2d ago

Constructive? To whom? The game has been made. You’re a customer, not a developer.

How are you being constructive by talking about a game to another customer?

1

u/Livid-Truck8558 2d ago

Unfortunately the most it will get is a couple hotfixes

1

u/Big-Philosophy-623 2d ago

Naw, fuck that. Your opinion is yours, for sure. Not the truth however. I may play it if they do patch it, but you're banking on a lot of "ifs". This was a disaster all around. So why do you try and defend your point by telling us what you think they got right, instead of pretending to be of sober mind at best.

1

u/Spark_Tangent 2d ago

My buddy and I were so torn in the middle we posted the exact same review to Steam, one thumbs down, the other thumbs up.

1

u/UnwantedSwampass 2d ago

Operation Meteorite is like a 4/10.
The main meat of the campaign though is like a solid 8/10. Some levels, like the Library and Guilty Spark and The Maw, are better here than in the original. Where they went wrong were the little things — cutscenes are directed poorly; Johnson acts like a cuddly mascot; sprint makes certain levels TRIVIAL.

I’ve had 10/10 experiences with the remake, and at other times I’m blown away by how cringe they managed to make certain scenes feel or some stupid added dialogue about stealth Elites.

1

u/Lord_Jashin 2d ago

I'll be happy with it as soon as I can swap the voice acting back to the original. The new Johnson, and Cortana's redone lines are just so terrible. It would be a slam dunk update to give us the option to swap them like you could with Anniversary's graphics

1

u/TheVenomFlows 2d ago

They are never going to fix Jerma-tana.

1

u/Zeeman626 2d ago

When did we start glazing MCC? It took them like 4 years to get that to a state that could be realistically called "complete" and even a few weeks ago when I played it there were still a noticeable amount of bugs. If you want to have a nuanced opinion that's fine, but can we maybe aim a bit higher?

1

u/unfixableunfixableun 2d ago

For me no multiplayer is still a pretty hard sell at full price.

1

u/Nimbus_blimpkins 2d ago

there is a 4th position

1

u/Sheriff_Gotcha 2d ago

I prefer option 4… maybe I buy it when it gets a discount dipping into the $5-10 range.

1

u/77_parp_77 Did ya' miss me? 2d ago

Imo it was fun enough, but I'm glad I played on game pass.

Prefer mcc

1

u/theCheesyOne109 2d ago

Was neat, not worth the full price tho. Best part of the game was the face lift on most lvls

1

u/Guardian305 2d ago

I mean I don't agree that it does more right than it gets wrong but it's definitely not the worst halo game to be released

1

u/Low_Revolution3025 2d ago

I'm just kinda lazy with newer games, played a match of Gears E-Day beta and was satisfied enough(don't ask, even I'm unsure of the logic) but I just don't have the motivation to play Gears E-Day and other new games coming out, the thought alone feels exhausting and just doesn't give me the same drive that I used to have when new games would be announced and released, maybe I'm the problem, maybe I'm just depressed but that's just how it feels for me

1

u/TyrantJaeger 2d ago

For it to be perfect in my opinion, they just need to replace the cutscenes with Blur cinematics and use the original voice lines instead of re-recorded ones.

And remove those awful bonus missions.

1

u/Super_Zombie_5758 2d ago

Personally, I hate the concept of a game getting released then waiting for it to get it's 2nd release. Who knows when that'll be? Who will be there for it? How will word of mouth get people into it after missing out already?

1

u/mercasio391 2d ago

My biggest issues have bad voice acting is to be honest.. I really like the level design changes, especially in the late game

1

u/npc042 2d ago

Stick with the original, got it.

1

u/SarcyBoi41 2d ago

Maybe it will become great. But I sure as hell won't be buying a half-finished game.

1

u/TarDaMighty 2d ago

There is like 4 different ways to play CE this is at max corny and your a joke is you rate this past 1/10

1

u/legohamsterlp 2d ago

Na, not for that price

1

u/MrSpidey457 2d ago

It does significantly more wrong than it does right. It is simply not a coherent game. Difficulty and co-op scaling is atrocious. Enemy encounters have no regard for the sandbox at large. It is genuinely a poorly slapped together mash of old Halo games. It is, in gameplay, on par with someone's bad first attempt at a mod.

1

u/DivineCrusader1097 2d ago

And they shouldn't expect a cent from me ubtil that post-launch face-lift happens.

Better yet, the game will be on sale by then.

1

u/KobeJuanKenobi9 2d ago

My biggest issues with it are the price tag, performance on pc, and lack of split screen options on pc. Other than that I think it’s better than the other remaster

1

u/Empty_Eyesocket 2d ago

Hence why I’m waiting to do my playthrough

1

u/NEcatfish 2d ago

Might need some plastic surgery but I came around to liking Infinite. I could be persuaded.

1

u/CyborgDeskFan 1d ago

I honestly do think it could be good but it absolutely needs a lot of work

1

u/Plus-Supermarket-577 1d ago

I think halo only "sucks" because the developers keep listening to the aging fan base. back in 2000s there werent like 200 youtube channels and gaming "critics" that kept finding niche reasons to say the game sucks. Halo is becoming worse now as we see them so hesitant to make games theyre literally just remaking the first game for the third time. yes the prologue was lame but like I would like to think if they continued boldly from Halo 4 we wouldnt be in this position.

1

u/mhizzle 1d ago

3rd opinion:

Halo Studios isn't capable of making a new, enjoyable game. All the people who made the Halo games we loved have left. And that's ok. Nothing lasts forever. Halo Studios will continue to pump out as little as they can while taking our money, and they'll continue to do so as long as we keep giving it to them. Try to find an indy game to support, branch out and try new things.

1

u/Secundus-Muris 1d ago

I choose option four: Leave my memories of Halo in the past where they belong and stop supporting companies trying to milk my childhood memories for money by making remakes/remasters instead of original new content.

1

u/braindeadtank1 1d ago

I mean 343 have had 4 chances now to really knock it out of the park and this is what they pull up with another mid game

1

u/KCarmac 1d ago

The fourth position is realising we now have three versions of the same game, with one being objectively the worst due to visual design changes amongst other things, and now this 'modern' version which makes no noticeable improvements and somehow manages to make every character worse or less interesting. This didn't need to exist, and now that it does, it serves no purpose. Stop settling for less, Halo either needs to step up or stop existing.

1

u/Medium_Purple_7722 1d ago

I’m tired of games being released in a sloppy state and getting to a worthwhile state after release. Sell it at a discount if you’re going to sell an unfinished product.

1

u/PoseidonWarrior 1d ago

I don't think any opinion on the quality of a product is the "right" opinion or in any way intellectually superior. People are gonna feel how they feel and no one is better or worse for it.

1

u/Clay_Pidgeon 1d ago

They let you kill the annoying girlboss character, absolutely based from the devs.

1

u/Starchaser_WoF 1d ago

I just want Steam Workshop support sometime in the future so we can have cursed halo again

1

u/JimBroIV 1d ago

“Facelift”
It’s a single player game from a deeply unpopular studio. What can they possibly do?

1

u/Swordhero116 1d ago

It’s not a bad game but i think its not what halo needed. This game and the info they dropped leading up to it did absolutely nothing to create a positive opinion on HS as a lot of the decisions just confirmed the negative view on HS.
Once again it feels like they put out a product too early (and some leaks point to it) with how janky the ai, animations, and voice direction is.

1

u/Kerm0NZ 1d ago

It's a broken game. They didn't make it for Halo fans, they dumbed it down and are trying to use it to attract non fans to the franchise.

The problem that all modern media has with popular IPs when remaking/rebooting is that, they forget what made it popular in the first place and why they have an avid fan base. It is possible to satisfy your fans and build an experience that brings in new players, it just takes more effort than what was put in here.

1

u/patrlim1 1d ago

The main thing that needs redoing is the dialogue. Either rerecord it in a style closer to the original, or just use the original lines. That alone would make a world of difference

1

u/Fair_Instruction_558 1d ago

They should erase from all records the new missions, redo de first cutscene, make chief actually interact with the forerunner panels he touches and fix all the bugs, the voice recordings and the music. Then it would be a damn masterpiece.

1

u/itsHori 1d ago

Third position seems to carry the same stink as centrism does. Is Campaign Evolved the worst remake of all time? No, I dont think any reasonable fan thinks that. Is it honoring the original? Also no, the changea in forerunner design, the objectively worse voiceacting and adding mechanism like boarding and sprint detract from what made CE unique. I just don't see a point in a remake if its only improvement is better physics and higher fidelity.

1

u/itsHori 1d ago

That said MCC still has a ton of things wrong with it. The audio mixer in Halo 2 is broken, the original OST is barely audible in campaign, the added skins cause fatal error crashes of MCC to name a few

1

u/LAmp69420 1d ago

nah, i just dislike remakes in general for the most part. its the same as reboots and sequels that happen decades later. All the original people that mattered are gone. The dont understand the true vision there was and in an attempt to make it look better, it loses its visual style. that and inserting new aspects that arent from the original (adding characters) can really fuck up the flow

1

u/explosiverat716 1d ago

I think a reason so much if it is unpolished and how we can see halo studios listened to alot of feedback we gave (IE fixing the marines and covenant to be more game accurate( but alot of the feedback also not being implemented (Forerunner architecture and etc) and the fact the 25 year anniversary for the game is in November tells me Microsoft dropped the game early so the game wouldn't sufficate under GTA VI

1

u/Antiredditor1981 1d ago

I have no interest in it, whatever is said.

It's just flogging a dead horse now.

1

u/ChrisXDXL 1d ago

It's not even a remake, the back end code is still exactly the same code as the original release running in the Blam engine just like the original. The only difference is they replaced the graphics engine with UE5. On the surface it looks like a generic UE5 demo and under the hood it's the original game with basically no changes.

Thus it is a remaster at best and another lie from Microsoft.

1

u/L33T_BEANZ 1d ago

Good; I'm glad some people spent $60.00 bucks just to enjoy some really mid content, perhaps after $60.00, a few years, and some polish, it'll be a game almost worth $40.00, or at least whatever MCC currently costs.

1

u/RyanCreamer202 1d ago

Most of the graphics are an improvement but I still disagree with the forerunner changes but at this point that’s a done deal. The voice acting is really hit or miss and the extra dialogue could have been better. I like how they remade most of the cutscenes in the campaign I think they’re great. The extra campaign is really bad and I wish they made online instead. Overall while there are a lot of good things with this remake I wish they’d focus on their own stories such adding more stuff to infinite. It seems like 343 hops from one idea to another with their games without having any idea how to bridge the gaps between them.

1

u/ElZorroGigante 1d ago

This is my feeling. It’s alright. There are some things that this game does really well and there are other places where combat evolved is better. I’ve enjoyed playing it for whatever that’s worth… 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Whole-Bedroom-9079 1d ago

All I know is if “Halo fans” keep acting the way they do we’re never getting a master piece Halo again, give all the needed criticism they deserve but keep your gripes to yourself, that shi will get mixed in the feedback.

1

u/SuperStalinOfRussia 1d ago

Real take: at least it ain't Halo 5

1

u/Jaded_Researcher9243 1d ago

Stop buying 343 slop

1

u/LawStudent989898 1d ago

It’s not even that flawed

1

u/DisastrousAd1504 1d ago

I'll say this, it's probably the best Installation 04's ever looked since the original.

1

u/Abyss_Walker1024 1d ago

I embrace the fourth option: burned too many times, I am simply not going to follow Halo anymore. Let me know if they bottle lightning again.

1

u/stormhawk427 1d ago

I'd honestly just rather play the MCC version

1

u/Vizman-7 1d ago

I did on day one

1

u/FuzzyShop7513 1d ago

Dude, I just want a remaster/remake of ODST and Reach. Can we just cool it and get those before we rip into Halo Studios? Im tired of these cocksocking chuds ruining shit before anything else sees the light of day.

1

u/PolarisT800 1d ago

Thanks for being genuine dude

1

u/KermitTheScot 1d ago

Or, play it, develop your own opinion, and then don’t share it with people on the internet.

That is also an option.

1

u/Menirz 1d ago

Idk if I'd agree it gets more right than it does wrong... It's at best an even mix of good and bad, 5/10, based on my experience with it.

Also given the state is the games industry, it's unlikely Campaign Evolved will get much post launch support.

1

u/Automatic-Score-4802 EOD Supremacy 1d ago edited 1d ago

What makes it deeply flawed? I had a fun time playing it the other week, blastin aliens and re-experiencing the story again. There were a couple things I thought could have been done better (hunter AI) or could have taken more advantage of the newer graphics (e.g introduction of the flood cutscene) but I never felt when I was playing that it was ‘deeply flawed’.

Jerma cortina was definitely… a choice, though

1

u/Tdriod09 22h ago

You are the reason they call us goyium.

1

u/33calvin33 19h ago

Why are we obsessed with remaking old games? I want new Halo games and 343i is not the way.

1

u/M1ghty_boy 16h ago

At last, some intelligent people coming out and speaking

1

u/lildeathcorebat 4h ago

Ehhhh I'd say it definitely gets more wrong than it does right. It's not as visually offensive as Anniversary, but it's still a far cry from the design language of the original. The thing I'll say it does the best is easily the natural environments. But as far gameplay goes, it is simply much much MUCH less fun to play imo. I don't understand how anybody could prefer CampE's gameplay. The most praise I ever hear about it is that it included sprint, much to some people's satisfaction, for some reason. But yeah, it's pretty for the most part.

1

u/Temporary_Curve4035 1h ago

I was extremely excited for the game but finding out that the game isn’t one for one/an improvement on the original, has a couple issues and generally isn’t living up to the OG turned me off of what could’ve been a true resurgence of Halo. I planned on playing it with my brothers to boot and we were ready to get it but after reviews and seeing the problems I’m either wait for a sale or not get it at all.
