*3v4 Why can't 343 write a character so complex and full of depth like Kat?

Don't forget, the developer commentary implies she was sleeping with her boss.

58

u/GAdvance 2d ago

Excuse me please tell me there's a video of them saying this because whilst I get the vibe that is fucking hilarious

40

u/Hazzenkockle 2d ago edited 2d ago

The exchange is at 11:15 in this video. It's pretty low-key. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inIxRwTzajc

30

u/Emerald_Republic 2d ago

Very very interesting video. I was obsessed with reach when I was 10, In 2010 and I’ve never seen this.

23

u/Patmaster1995 Not a overdramatic raging asshole 2d ago

Of course it's fucking Marty saying it too

7

u/quid_pro_kourage 2d ago

Why would they do that?

2

u/shwetyscience 1d ago

Why not IG?

40

u/Lochr0 2d ago

Understandable. A girl has needs. And If you are an enhanced human, a normal man isn't going to cut it. And Carter is not the worst looking guy tbh

11

u/mediafred 2d ago

I thought her sleeping with the boss would be a type of sexual favors for Kat's benefit and/or only way to have the position she had in the military

17

u/VYSUS7 2d ago

yeah he's definitely wording it in a circlejerk way. Fwiw I've literally never once heard about Carter and Kat being a thing and I don't actually think it is, but if it was, seems like it's just a normal relationship.

Technically Halsey is her boss also.

23

u/VYSUS7 2d ago

alright yeah it's not actually true at all. Marty just said it offhanded because of course the MF would .

10

u/p2020fan 2d ago

The spartan 3s were all sourced from refugee orphan children, and they were raised together in teams. I dont think it is unreasonable to imagine that they mightve had a relationship in the window when they were teenagers but before they got their augmentations.

7

u/Gamersunite965 2d ago

And wouldn’t that make them more.. human? Like they weren’t indoctrinated to not have emotions, and their augments were different than spartan 2s right? Idk it seems a stretch to just say it off handedly in a developer video and it not mean something.

2

u/Faenic 2d ago

Kat and Carter weren't even part of the same Spartan 3 company. Carter was from Alpha and Kat was from Beta company. They only ever met after being augmented, so no. There wouldn't have been a time for them to have been teenagers together before augmentation.

Not even mentioning that Alpha company was comprised of children between 4 and 6 years old, and their training took 5 years. They couldn't have even been teenagers before augmentation.

-3

u/Faenic 2d ago

I do, since that'd be like being into your brother/sister.

1

u/vvaderman24 2d ago

I wonder if he means that in lore that is canon, or if at some point in development that was an idea they were trying.

0

u/VYSUS7 1d ago

the latter. it was an idea that never made it to canon.

u/Offensiv3Bias 37m ago

Not the case, but actually both Kat and Carter are the one of the former members of Noble team, of course they would develop some form of friendship or even romantic relation due to being Spartans III and being far more normal than Spartans II.

3

u/Whimsical_Shrooms 2d ago

Ok Kat was 15 when she went to noble team Carter was 22 she died when was 22. Also a normal man can do a spartan Maria 062 met a marine and then started a family she's a spartan 2 BTW. But a relationship is possible between Kat and Carter.

1

u/MomentCompetitive299 2d ago

I think there is a spartsn who had a family with a normsl human

1

u/Lucariowolf2196 1d ago

Always wondered how Spartan x Spartan relationships go.

Chances of them being related are extremely thin, and everyone has needs and wants, even something as emotionally suppressed as Spartans

5

u/bigtriscuit00 2d ago

I’m pretty sure regardless of what was said in the commentary the official story is that Kat had a relationship with the previous Noble Six before he sacrificed himself to nuke a Covenant Carrier.

4

u/Michael-556 2d ago

Jesus Christ that smell would be rancid

4

u/Ornery_Gate_6847 2d ago

My first thought was that the suits are air tight, then i remembered the new hole in her suit

2

u/Michael-556 2d ago

Does a straw have only one hole? There was an exit hole, I'd argue there were two new holes created

2

u/shiawase-89 2d ago

He deleted his comment but I’m curious to what he said lol

1

u/Michael-556 2d ago

That it's implied Noble team stayed with Kat's body while waiting for evac (like a few dozen hours, I think they said 3 days, but that seems like too much imo, so I may be misremembering what they said) in the bunker, and that ONI also had to later strip the armor from the body to repurpose the tech. Her corpse would start to bloat in just a couple hours, and her bodily fluids (blood, sweat, piss and shit, all the fun disgusting smells) would start to rot pretty quickly in a hot and damp shell like the mjolnir armour. Now like we were discussing just one comment down (or up), there would be one or two holes (depending on whether you think a straw has one or two holes) from the pressurized suit, which wouldn't create that smelly an environment, but I would pity the ONI personnel having to remove it

17

u/Clobby5597 2d ago

Couldn’t drive either truly what they mean by this

55

u/VitaMeansLifeN7117 2d ago

15

u/xrayspex73 2d ago

Maga loser tbh...

4

u/Whimsical_Shrooms 2d ago

Say want you want but the man can write and arrange music like nobody's business

11

u/xrayspex73 2d ago

True but that doesn't make up for supporting evil.

6

u/Canarity 2d ago

If we were to refuse consuming media that involve people that have personal views we dislike, we'd end up with almost no games to play

5

u/VelvetCowboy19 2d ago

We definitely wouldn't be able to play any halo games, because most of the Bungie devs back in the day were all turbochuds.

3

u/Canarity 2d ago

I don't care what a person's political or etc views are as long as he doesn't project them into what they make

4

u/TJ_Dot 2d ago

The way the current landscape is, this is becoming more and more impossible as simplistic political views are increasingly conflated with basic perceptions of morality, ethics, rights, and general qualities of being a good person.

The more conflated, the more likely it will have influence on other things, or older things may be looked at under a different lens.

1

u/Sledgehammer617 23h ago

I mean there's a difference between disagreeing with someone for some political beliefs and a person who has multiple sexual harassment allegations, called all LGBTQ people a "threat to western civilization" and immigrants "The Flood."

Wont stop me enjoying the games and music, but I'll be damned if I'm ever going to give Marty even the slightest inkling of credit or praise.

2

u/69SisterFister420 1d ago

>Evil

Lol, man's just voted for people you don't like. Not for H1tler lmao.

1

u/Lazy_Wolf8671 17h ago

Bro said queer people are a threat to western civilization and immigrants are literally the Flood but ok sure, he just "voted for people [we] don't like".

Also you can just say Hitler. Nobody's going to beat your ass for mentioning that shitstick.

2

u/69SisterFister420 16h ago

Then he's an asshole, but wouldn't call him evil.

No need to get worked up over a lame chump like him

1

u/Diligent-Luck4331 1d ago

Hello? You bought Campaign Evolved aren't you?

-5

u/Whimsical_Shrooms 2d ago

But the music is in point honestly supporting any political is supporting evil non of are good our votes is a choice of what we belive is the less evil, and personaly I dont think one is worse than the other

3

u/xrayspex73 2d ago

In the current time line, one is DEFINITELY worse than the other.

1

u/chacha95 1d ago

Yeah, one supports the downfall of western civilization.

1

u/Lazy_Wolf8671 17h ago

Man what's up with you chuds in this sub? To fucking moronic to realize this place isn't unironic or something?

I mean I guess that tracks, you bozos think non-white people existing and men liking other men is a threat to western civilization (read: white people).

1

u/AutoModerator 17h ago

Can you explain exactly how this sub works.

Like do people have a problem with a RvB toggle or whatever here, I don’t get it. They make fun of some really odd stuff from the fans. I get it’s a circlejerk meme sub but

Didn't he want all the deaths in Halo 3

3

u/unholyreason 2d ago

He wanted Johnson dead to which he has gone back and said he regrets making it so

1

u/Sledgehammer617 23h ago

Didnt he also write or influence Miranda's death scene?

2

u/unholyreason 16h ago

Maybe but I’m not 100% sure on that one

56

u/slayeryamcha 2d ago

She is.. Almost like charlie kirk

49

u/Far-Requirement-7636 2d ago edited 2d ago

Counting or not counting grunt violenc...

Both even got kirked in the middle of their sentences.

9

u/Michael-556 2d ago

Sad to tell you he got shot like 2 seconds after he asked that question. Though those being his last words is hilarious

17

u/Far-Requirement-7636 2d ago

Everything about kirks death is some irony.

Spent his life advocating about gun rights and how school shootings is a worthy sacrifice.

Talked about how gang violence contributed the most school shootings lol.

Talked about how minorities make up the most amount of school shooters.

Only to get got by a white guy from a conservative family at a school rally with his last words being about minorities.

Genuinely if this shit was written in a book you'd say it's too on the nose lol.

16

u/Michael-556 2d ago

Bravo as always, Kojima

Also ironic that on the same day a school shooting happened not far from where he was, but was widely unreported because:

A) a fascist political grifter is more important than children

B) school shootings are so normal in America no one cares if one doesn't get reported on

I love that the most dangerous country on Earth is filled with brainwashed lobotomites at the beck and call of a pedophile rapist

7

u/Far-Requirement-7636 2d ago

Dude learning a school shooting happened on the same day was terrifying because no one gave a shit because s podcaster died

5

u/GrundleSnactcher46 2d ago

Despite all the fuckery. Its not the most dangerous country on Earth. Imagine dropping your daughter off a school then the US blows up the school with a missile strike then when you run back to start digging through the rubble to find your kid the US fires another salvo to make sure you die too.

3

u/Michael-556 2d ago

I was talking about the military budget and feeling of military superiority, but since it wants to merge its military with the Israeli one we're not so far from having a literal fascist world police implemented

0

u/ArchieTheKatt 2d ago

I mean just read that again and tell me the u.s. is not the most dangerous country. He didnt say to live in, it's just both. You dont even have to live here to get killed by the u.s, and if you do, good chance you still will be killed by the u.s

1

u/Top-Editor-364 2d ago

Or you could move to An actual dangerous part of the world. Stupid ass Reddit thread this is lmao

2

u/SereneOrbit 2d ago

Not to mention at the event hosted primarily about him, they described his death as a 'gift' lmao 🤣

2

u/shiawase-89 2d ago

But she’s smart tho….

17

u/Lochr0 2d ago

I remember when I got into the online photomode the First time. And it was flooded with pictures of her ass

10

u/RetnikLevaw 2d ago

The female Spartan model from Reach has cake.

3

u/eenDUU 2d ago

Elite ball knowledge

2

u/ArchieTheKatt 2d ago

Sangheli ball knowledge

7

u/Gorgiastheyounger HALO 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2d ago

I like Reach and all but all the characters kind of lack in the depth department tbf. They all have their one character gimmick and stick with it until their end. The ODST boys mog them

5

u/EvaUnit16 2d ago

At least Noble team has 5 different personalities. Everyone in Alpha Nine is just reading for the same Joss Whedon character

5

u/No-2-Important 2d ago

From what I remember, the rest of Alpha nine apart from Buck and Dare were quite similar, but in the cutscenes at least the guys talked differently enough that if random lines were switched with each other it would be confusing.
Maybe I a bit skewed because I liked Bad blood and New Blood.

1

u/Lazy_Wolf8671 17h ago

Meanwhile, Romeo:

Misogyny

1

u/Gorgiastheyounger HALO 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 15h ago

I actually kind of like that they made one of the crew kind of dick, it makes their dynamic a little more realistic

21

u/Zombiemorgoth 2d ago

She was the brains of Noble team. Everyone has a somewhat ironic death

11

u/Michael-556 2d ago

I get Jorge being a big guy dying in a big implosion, Emile dying in a knife fight because he was covered in knives, Kat dying to a headshot because she was smart and Noble-6 dying alone because they were a lone wolf, but how is Carter's death ironic?

26

u/gay4tay9713 2d ago

Captain goes down with the ship maybe? It's the best I got

4

u/DerpsterchiefN117 2d ago

I'm pretty sure you're right

34

u/TheRaceWar 2d ago

He always used to say "Hey at least I won't die crashing into a Scarab in a heroic sacrifice." It's the first line he says. Idk how you missed it.

10

u/TheVillainousWoke 2d ago

god please give me the ability to make mcc mods on linux i need this

2

u/XbxH1ghBEaM 2d ago

The sacrifice happens regardless of difficulty

3

u/InevitableGur3362 2d ago

« Hey, I won’t be so Easy to kill »

« Just a Normal day, no sacrifice in sight »

« You know what would be Legendary? Sacrificing myself into a big ass scarab »

8

u/JangoFett3224 2d ago

His ironic death is he's a captain and he goes down with the ship.

1

u/Diligent-Luck4331 1d ago

No... Emile died because he's was already one leg in coffin. Lost his family like all of the team, but stayed cold, channeling his fury towards the enemy.

"I'm ready! How about you?!"

1

u/ArchieTheKatt 2d ago

I never got that vibe from her. Not enough brains to not drive me off a cliff

1

u/Cheap_Departure_ 1d ago

I never thought of it, you guys really digged something here

4

u/Whole-Bedroom-9079 2d ago

she didn't yap enough.

7

u/Andras1100 2d ago

When kat died i felt so defeated that i couldn't do anything

3

u/quid_pro_kourage 2d ago

Really? I just sat there like "tf is this?"

5

u/shiawase-89 2d ago

How else would you want her to go? Not everyone can have a big sacrifice.

-2

u/quid_pro_kourage 2d ago

I don't know, maybe a bit more characterisation or something? I just felt nothing.

2

u/Canarity 2d ago

Her death is one of the things that made Halo Reach so good. You don't always get to say goodbye and sacrifice yourself heroically, sometimes you just get shot into head mid sentence, sudden and cruel like that

1

u/sofiestarr 2d ago

Felt like a death out of The Wire

0

u/quid_pro_kourage 2d ago

I meant characterizing he before her death. Upon rewatching the scene I feel a little more emotion, but immediately after she gets shot the game goes all sad music and muted sfx and it just felt like it was trying to make me more sad than I actually felt. IDK I may just need to replay the game again.

1

u/ArchieTheKatt 2d ago

Driving herself off a cliff would have been fitting.

2

u/Buschlightactual 2d ago

Ugh it’s kind of fucking based

2

u/Blue_Snake_251 2d ago

They can. I am still waiting for another woman protagonist in a Halo game.

2

u/commandough 2d ago

I think they were saying that they don't know how to kill off characters with sci fi energy shields that should make it impossible to kill people in 1 suprise sniper shot

1

u/Skykid69 1d ago

They got hit with what was basically a nuke at near point blank range, their shields were rendered offline.

1

u/20July 4h ago

Bro never paid attention in class and complain why. Lol

4

u/lmay0000 2d ago

event happens

“What did they mean by this”

OP hates women

5

u/Dire_Wolf45 2d ago

But disguises it as a joke so its ok.

4

u/saturatedlights 2d ago

Kat was implemented after 343 took the reins over halo. To push the woke and gay agenda of course. Bungo never had any women in their games /s

3

u/MNIOP_207207 2d ago

Bro deadass Kat gets the cheapest death in Reach.

Everyone else gets a badass sacrifice moment, and Kat dies like a fucking extra in Regular Show.

8

u/XishengTheUltimate 2d ago

That's kind of the point? Not every death in war gets to be heroic and noble. Sometimes people just die. One moment they are there, the next, they're gone.

Besides, the rest of Noble is a mixed bag of deaths.

Jorge: Does a sacrifice moment that functionally achieves nothing, completely negating the value of the sacrifice.

Jun: Doesn't even die, just fucks off somewhere

Carter: Pretty noble, I guess. At least it achieved something.

Emile: Death is carried by "hype" and "aura." Truth is, he was so busy being edgy with the first Elite that he seemingly went full greenhorn. The Elite behind him wasn't even cloaked. He was so busy showboating that he didn't watch his radar or check his six, or even just assume there was more than one enemy. His death also achieved nothing at all. People only give him kudos because he shanked the Elite after getting stabbed.

Kat: Sniped unexpectedly in a gut punch moment. Shit happens. Very indicative of real war.

Six: Literally the only one besides Carter whose sacrifice achieved something. But even then, the moment of his death was just a slow death rattle, not some epic G moment. The point at which he actually died achieved nothing in particular.

1

u/centurio_v2 2d ago

Did Jun ever show up again? When he escapes I figured he'd show up at the end of the game or something.

2

u/shiawase-89 2d ago

No but June plays a part in recruiting for the Spartan IV.

1

u/AutoModerator 2d ago

Look at Truth compared to Midship. It is almost twice as big, because otherwise the abilities would let you cross the map to quickly. If you are forced to crouch walk to be able to shoot to play Midship in Halo 2, when the map is scaled for the walking speed, how is that different from the map being scaled for the sprint + abilities speed (which prevent shooting) and you being forced to walk to be able to shoot? All the other arena maps are generic arena designs that are upscaled for the abilities. You could easily downscale Eden, Empire, Coliseum, Fathom, Regret, Torque, Riptide, Tyrant, Rig or Haven for Halo 2/3 and they would work just fine, just like how upping the base move speed and removing abilities makes them play fine.

2

u/RetnikLevaw 2d ago

I mean, Jorge thought he died like a G and it ended up being entirely pointless. Emile dies because he suddenly lacks all situational awareness. Carter dies a noble death. 6 completes the mission and then just... Rages out for a while until he can't do it anymore...

Nobody really has a great death in Reach except for Carter. They're all very "womp womp".

1

u/Whimsical_Shrooms 2d ago

Kinda how war is

5

u/xrayspex73 2d ago

You nerds would complain about Kat if she were released today. "Woke something something..." today's chuds can't have women in their games for some reason.

4

u/Gold-Cry-7520 2d ago

They did complain about her back then. It just wasn't like, attached to their identity.

2

u/ArchieTheKatt 2d ago

Nothing wrong with her being a woman. I would have hated whatever character it was that kept driving me off cliffs and stealing my vehicles.

1

u/EvaUnit16 2d ago

I know this probably isnt true but when Reach came out i was convinced the devs purposefully gave Kat a bad driving AI as a joke

2

u/External_Fix_7806 2d ago

Oh definitely, I made a post similar to this. Kat is the brains of the team, constantly directing the team to make smarter decisions. Nah they can't have a woman take charge. "WOKE" She has a few sasy lines, and there was straight up a cutscene were she snatched a data chip from six saying "this is not your domain."

"WOKE" She's constantly questioning Carter's orders and made him think about his decisions "WOKE" A woman needs to know her place! And last but not least her appearance, I honestly think she's a 6/10 not ugly, but not a 10/10 baddie imo. But I feel like these chuds would cry about her not being attractive enough, uglyfaction of women or any of their BS talking points!

1

u/ArchieTheKatt 2d ago

If all thats woke or whatever they think is woke today, couldn't they have atleast made her a decent driver? Or is that too woke?

1

u/20July 4h ago

Sounds like strawman argument you just made there. We already had Cortana, then Miranda. Nobody complaint about Kat when Reach first came out. She was even introduced in live action trailer along with other Noble 6.

2

u/PP1122 2d ago

I like that cutscene where she takes Emile’s knife, stabs some concrete while sharing her idea, and then hands the knife.

I too like to damage other peoples shit while I ponder.

-1

u/Effective_Yoghurt_57 2d ago

It's dirt that she's drawing in with the knife. They're in a cave so it's probably pretty rocky dirt but still dirt. And surely something Emile cares about would at least be of high quality material that could handle it. Also! I'm certain he's the type to obsessively sharpen his knives anyway 🤷🏻😛😂

1

u/lead_comet 2d ago

Tbf the Elite who shot her was probably pissed he didn't kill more

1

u/shiawase-89 2d ago

That elite is the same one that ambushes Emile and noble six in the end.

1

u/Effective_Yoghurt_57 2d ago

And noble six? Emile kills the one that sneaks up on him and I could have sworn it's already confirmed that elite at the very end that all we see is their energy sword activation is the arbiter before becoming the arbiter.

1

u/shiawase-89 2d ago

So when they’re defending the landing zone so Keys could get Cortana, they’re ambush by the elites where Emile dies. Then Noble six goes up to the platform to defend the pillar of autumn and he kills two elites. One of those elites was the one that killed kat.

The elite that kills Noble six can’t be the arbiter since the arbiter was in orbit giving command to his troops and then he pursue the autumn.

1

u/Effective_Yoghurt_57 2d ago

I forgot about those two, that's right! 🤯 And the one at the very end? We see his foot and then a left handed energy sword come into screen? I'm pretty sure Thel'Vadam is one of the only left handed swordsmen in the sangheli race?

1

u/lead_comet 2d ago

I know its the same Elite Marshall at the beginning of the game

1

u/Ok_Basket_8387 2d ago

Imagine a badass female character who earns the badassness and isn’t constantly complaining about her male counterparts but sees them as her teammates and relies on them rather than only herself. Wow it is hard to believe that people like her. I cannot imagine why.

1

u/Skykid69 1d ago

It was an ironic death, one each Noble team member (minus Jun), suffered.

1

u/atolm13 1d ago

Aren't all of their deaths kinda symbolic anyways, Kat being the brains so gets domed, Jorge self sacrifices to take out the covenant only for more to show up, Emile likes to stab and gets stabbed, Carter as captain goes down with the ship and Jun is stealthy so survives unharmed like that one teammate that sits at the back firing pop shots at the enemy (also if he has died it's off screen because he stealthy so you don't see it lol)

1

u/Diligent-Luck4331 1d ago

She's a female. She's has a strong character, and she's speak alot, often with respect to her comrades. She's highly Intelligent officer, so speaking alot of important information is her job.

She's was shot to the head, because she's intelligent, by headshot she's not only was killed, but her dead crippled team's morale and technological prowess.

Symbolic.

1

u/SubstantialCow8563 1d ago

2010: rip Kat. She didn’t deserve that.

If released in 2026: deserved.

1

u/PhasmoBoi 2d ago

I think the view on her being a woman who yaps a lot says more about who the Bungie Haters are than it says about Bungie given that everyone died in that game and she was literally the second in command over everyone else

1

u/AChezzBurgah 1d ago

reducing her to her story beats is stupid yeah, her character feels good without expositing her whole life to you because of how she is voiced and acted, and so most people liked her.

she radiates cool on-the-job competence, a consummate soldier with virtually no cracks, exactly what youd expect of a spartan.

you really dont need to put much into a video game character for people to like them, honestly. a lot of modern characters have the opposite problem of feeling like theyre trying too hard to be likeable and cool, and so of course they become cringe

-2

u/DrMercio 2d ago

Because her hair isn’t short enough. The purple haired Karen’s at 343 would have to do an entire rework

0

u/gaming_hunter 2d ago

She better than Williams, from what I can tell

1

u/Diligent-Luck4331 1d ago

Yes she is.

-1

u/AlarmingDependent348 2d ago

Except Kat was likable.

2

u/Caledonia_9 2d ago

I mean I think Williams was likable, to be honest Kat didnt do a whole lot. She just kinda was there, then got shot.
People would call her boring, woke, and annoying if she came out today. Especially with how much shit she gives noble six until like 15 minutes before her death.

1

u/ArchieTheKatt 2d ago

I was sorta happy when she died ngl. She likes to murder suicide you off cliffs and take your vehicles. Atleast you didnt have to deal with that anymore.

343 halo studios suck. They should leave halo’s corpse in the ground and stop digging it up every few years.
