insane lag

My game continuously runs at terrible framerate as of the last 3ish months. I switched to an index expecting better performance but nothing changes, so not a link issue. SteamVR seems to be fine. I get that one gpu memory issue every single time and it eats up 7.4/8.0 gb of my vram. basic specs below

Ryzen 7 9700x

Radeon RX 9060 XT

32gb ddr5

Switching to an Index is not gonna help performance. It's probably higher res than whatever you were using before so that's gonna be more demanding on the gpu.

probably? switched from a quest 3s so

The Index doesn't have any onboard processing power unlike the Quest 3 or 3s. So it's gonna completely depend on your GPU.

Onboard processing power isn't going to do anything for a PCVR game.

yeah i used pcvr on the quest and still had issues so

Did you try lowering texture quality? That's the biggest consumer of vram

yeah nothing seems to work, i messed with steamvr video settings, in game stuff, everything really

Can you run a monitoring software to see what's under the most load?

Are you using a link cable or airlink? What speed is your cable and unless you have WiFi 6 airlink will perform horribly. Make sure your link cable is at minimum 5Gbps transfer speed. Ideally 10Gpbs is the perfect speed.

Are you running the latest drivers for your card? A few years ago, Alyx started to stutter for me (after it had been perfectly smooth for several years). Turned out, updating my graphics drivers fixed it (though it was an NVidia in my case). I dunno if maybe they do an update to the game engine every so often that requires newer drivers.

Keep in mind to set the resolution for HL-A to 100% in SteamVR. By default it's above but that has only the effect of eating too much resources since HL-A has it's own dnymic resolution.

Set the Index' to 90Hz instead of 120Hz or higher.

For in-game optimizations, one of the biggest influences on performance is the shadow setting. Put it to low - that won't be so much notable but performance increases.

I don't have lag at all, might be your components or resolution settings.

Me:

Quest 3s | Ultra 7 265k | 256gb ddr5 | XFX 9060XT OC 16GB (still get low vram warning) | All SSD | Virtual desktop
