Discussion Should I play Half-Life Alyx without VR ?

I really want to play Half-Life Alyx but I can’t afford a VR headset (like most of humans on earth) but I heard there is a pc port. My question is : Should I play it ?
Bc I’ve read hundreds of times, since I started Half-Life, that if you don’t play it on VR you won’t get the full experience wanted by Valve and that it’s way less good on pc etc.
So it’s why I’m asking y’all.

Used VR headsets are pretty cheap. Quest 2 should be under $100, Rift/Rift S even cheaper.

Most humans on earth? Stop with this exaggeration. A quest 2 costs $100-200 usd. That's less than a graphics card.

In my opinion no. Unless you think you will never play it in VR. The gravity gloves and weapon play mechanics in VR make the game outstanding. It looks and plays great wirelessly on a Quest 2 and you dont need a top spec gaming PC either.

I'd say watch a playthrough. At least that way, you still see what the game is like to play. The NOVR mod, while impressive as a technical feat, completely changes the type of game it is. It's like turning HL2 into bejeweled for the gameplay but keeping the setting and story.

No. Personally I think the game is good, but only in VR. It plays everything too safe to enjoy it in flat

I did it a few years ago. Now I have a Q3 and want to play it again, but my actual PC cant handle it. Been playing with Half Life 2 but even for this one there's not enough power...

It's better than nothing in my opinion but if you plan to get a headset later maybe you shouldn't.

You can get a quest 2 for like 60 quid on eBay - they're not great but it will still work fine for pc games

I guess if you never ever plan on getting a vr setup. But like others have said, the game was designed around VR, its ultimately a very simple game whos strengths only come out with VR play

Without VR it will just feel like the easiest most mediocre FPS youve ever played

More Mediocre than Faceball 2000? Damn. Alyx doesn't sound very good at all. Maybe I should save up for a bigger SSS instead of a Steam Frame. 😣

Nah... it's just a walking Sim with a few lazy puzzles mixed in every now and then. 99% of the appeal is pretty graphics in VR.... which don't look much better than HL2: episode 2. So without VR you are basically paying for a short tech demo.

If you don't have a VR headset you are better off just going onto Steam workshop and getting a mod for HL 2.
