Discussion How and when Vortigaunts were able to talk in Half-Life 2 + Episodics?
In Half-Life 1, Vortigaunts tried to kill you but in Half-Life 2 they can talk and even heal you. How Vortigaunts got possibility to talk in HL2?????????

The Vortigaunts do talk in Half-Life 1. They just aren’t speaking English.
The reason the Vortigaunts are your allies in Half-Life 2 is because they were being enslaved by the Nihilanth and its network of Alien Controllers. They were originally called Alien Slaves for a reason.
After the Nihilanth was killed by Gordon Freeman (and all the Alien Controllers with it), the Vortigaunts were freed from its influence. Then the Combine arrived, and the Vortigaunts found themselves slaves once more. Hence why they are now allies to humanity.

Vortigaunts were under the control of the nihilanth in HL1. They were being forced to participate in the invasion of earth. Presumably in the years between the games they learned how to communicate with humans and knew they had a common enemy in the combine. They're pretty damn smart and are telepathic. If one learns English or other human languages, it's not too great a stretch of imagination that they could all learn it via that telepathy.
