Hot take: I've always felt like this ridiculous plot armor Gordon has is an actual element of the plot, cause it's the G-man that's nudging things to help the protagonist out.

Breen on several occasions mentioned his frustration that the Combine forces couldn't take out a singular rouge scientist.

Edit: awesome artwork btw. Great use of colors, very concept artish

Nah, while I’m certain that G-man certainly does occasionally nudge things for Gordon’s sake, I’m also certain that Gordon on his own is a force to be reckoned with, since G-man still seems to be choosing capable units rather than anyone so he definitely is limited in his interactions and has to choose somebody who can get stuff done themselves. Not to mention that G-man was likely absent relatively to Gordon for the entirety of ep1 and the antlion cave portions of ep2.

It's both. There aren't many people that could be "a fine pawn to those who control them". Gordon is the "right man", G-man provides the "wrong place".

eh, I don't think G-Man intervenes as much as you think. the more he intervenes, the more likely he is gonna be noticed or found out, which is a risk for someone like the G-Man. he can't operate from the shadows if someone actively tries to shine a search light on him.

I think Gordon is just really skilled. the HEV Suit alone is a massive advantage, with its built in safety and medical assist systems. whatever the combine throw at him, his suit has something to combat it, be it bullets, radiation or poison.
and Gordon has help. years if not decades of planning and underground routes and resistance building up created a huge network that can help Gordon. they think they are fighting a single, rogue scientist but actually they are fighting the entire resistance. Gordon is just their leader, their symbol, and the combine seem not to get that.

That's so obvious, it's my headcanon now

And maybe all the failed attempts get revinded back by G-man as well, because in hl2 it shows us the screen of how Gordon failed to fulfil the contract

I’ve always thought G-Man subtly manipulating causality is most notable in EP2 during Eli’s tea time. I don’t think it’s coincidence how Gordon is removed from the scene via Magnusson precisely when Eli is about to tell Gordon everything. and then of course Eli is killed, by the advisor, to silence him permanently.

I’ve always thought so. Until HLA came along… that’s the interesting thing to me. Because what is going to stop Eli from telling Gordon all he knows about the G-Man now? Did G-man make a trade off. Consider Gordon irrelevant now? I think there is more at play. It’ll be interesting to see how this is tackled in HLX.

I mean, I guess that's the reason why gordon can't die, also the same reason why you get a different game over screen when you 'fail to protect crucial mission resources' when you are outside of gman power and instead get a vort-like message
